In this essay, I am to describe and interpret the chronotopes in novel, ‘Namdo saram, the Southerner' of Lee Chung-Jun, based Bakhtin's concept of chronotope.
Bakhtin calls a specific way of conceptualizing human action in time and space chronotope.
And he says “Every entry into the sphere of meaning is accomplished only through the gates of the chronotope.” That saying means if we want to discover a certain meaning of the work, we must pass through the gates of chronotope and enter into the world of the work. The world of ‘Namdo, the Southern, and ‘Namdochang’ has its unique chronotopicity. It is characterized by achronic or extratemporal time and vertical axis of it. With its vertical axis structure, Namdo has another remarkable chronotopic space, the road. And one more important chronotope is found in this work; the chronotope of threshold. According to Bakhtin, its most fundamental instance is as the chronotope of crisis and break in a life. The horizontal line of the roads, on which the wonderer is searching for voice, is crossing to vertical axis of 'Voice and Light., The dialectic relationship which they, two dimensions enter together into, forms a world of hete-rochronous.
