With the official departure of the World Trade Organization, the nations in the world embarked upon change and reform to become the first in the globe`s single market of fierce competition. Furthermore, consumeroriented posture has increasingly become specialized and complicated and price competition is getting even fiercer. In the era of unparalleled competition, in particular, it is all the more difficult to come up with specialties of Cheju in the Korean market and specialties of Korean in the world market. As the world has become a single market, there is no border in the competition among enterprises the world over. The same is true for the competition in the globe`s design industry which is eager to develop high value-added products. This means that in today`s world, industrial design, one of the two most important factors together with technological development, is being recognized as "required," not "elective," condition in promoting international competitiveness. Compared with technological development, industrial design needs 1/10 investment money and 1/3 development period. Thus, the development of industrial design is much more efficient and economical in terms of sales and value added, with less investment and time. Chejudo has relied on the tourist and orange industry for its economic growth. Considering Chejufo`s regional economic aspects characterized by scarce capital and inferior environment for technological development, however, the importance of industrial design in the economy of Chejudo needs to be further emphasized as it has bright prospects of adding value to the development of modern-concept tourist business in Chejudo. Moreover, it is urgently requested that actions be taken to foster the development of package design for products manufactured by small-and medium-sized enterprieses. In addition, comprehensive policy measures for the promotion of industrial design, including detailed plans for each independent sector, should be established and contained in the Chejudo`s overall development plan.
