The aim of this work is to study a motif of money that appears in works of Chekhov at time of decadence of the second part of 19th century, when capitalism has come to Russia from Western Europe and began its growth. Money almost always has a close connection with human`s behavior and really became an essential element of our lives. It entered literature and, following literature standards, has become a meaningful formal element, has become a motif connected with literary works` themes both directly and indirectly. Therefore we got interested in question of what meaning and function money has in literature, and particularly how it is reflected in the mirror of Russian literature. Money is a main cause and motive that makes people face the real world. The characters of literary work make mistakes not when they possess money or trying to possess it but they do mistakes when they do not understand clearly what it means to have money and what their desire to possess it signifies. People do not know the substantive power of money. That is money can get out of control of people who possess it or try to possess and by its own power can create a completely new situation that no one could presuppose. In literature there have been formed new ways that use a motif of money, and by that functions of money began to appear in more diverse forms. Most of money motifs accomplish multi-level composition of a literary work and help along in development of action. In addition to that, the motif of money along with development of psychologism, can be sensed in personality portrayal of negative characters, in such characteristics as propensity to calculating, greed and miserliness which result from strong obsession about riches and instigate to performing a criminal act. In such topics as money, wealth, inheritance, dowry it often creates motives for sincere or deceitful actions and provides characters with roles. In Russian literature the motif of money has a long history that takes its roots in Slavic mythology. Orthodox church way of thinking, which separates wealth and poverty, integrity, mercy and sympathy, had an especially strong influence on the people. Even in modern literature, influenced by western Europe, there are reproduced and repeated consistent ideas of obsession about money, wealth, miserliness and greed, connected with human`s weakness and sins, good deeds of the poor and evil deeds of the rich. As a result of study of Chekhov`s short stories and plays we can say that subject of influence of the motif of money took an important place in realistic literary works of the author who expressed various nature of life in social and economic conditions of second part of 19th century in Russia.

This paper is focused on the meaning and function of food in Goncharov`s novel Oblomov. First, the most conspicuous feature of food in the novel is tastelessness. There are numerous lists of all kinds of Russian and Western dishes, but never a mention of taste. This makes the hero Oblomov not a gourmet. He is simply addicted to food. The second feature of food is that it transcends any ideological interpretation. Oblomov consumes both sumptuous Russian country dishes and imported western delicacies. What is at issue here is not nationality of the dish. Food as such is extremely important, because it functions as a firewall to protect him from the terrible reality. Oblomov`s life, protected by food and sleep, is equivalent to death in that it never moves forward. Oblomov`s vegetative life simply approaches, slowly and steadily, to death with the help of huge amount of tasteless food he relishes everyday. What the author conveys here is not the cursed malady of Oblomovism nor the "gastronomic slavophilism", but a total eclipse of human mind. The inertia and apathy of Oblomov may be a replica of his creator`s mental status.

This paper aims at examining new inserts and changes that appear in the 1842 version of "The Portrait" by Nikolai Gogol to find out an answer to what motivated the often enigmatic writer to revise the work that was included in Arabesques (1835). A close attention has been paid to the plot and the build-up of characters of "The Portrait." Overall, Gogol grew out of the Romantic views of the supernatural in favor of rendering realistic coloration to the 1835 Arabesques version, the consequence of which is that Chartkov becomes more vulnerable to temptations due to social conditions. More importantly, I argue that Gogol`s firsthand experience of Rome left an unmistakable imprint on the revised work as the monk-artist`s son emerges as an ideal alternative between Chartkov, an artist who squandered his talent to pursue wealth and fame, and the iconographer who represents the Russian faith. In introducing the blood ties between the iconographer and the promising artist who studied in Italy, Gogol suggests an ideal compromise between secular and religious arts. In particular, the iconographer`s son is nothing short of the mouthpiece for Gogol, inasmuch as he gives the lengthy sermon on the right path a talented artist should take. The structure and the message filled with didactic urge point to the similarity that bind "Taras Bul`ba" and "The Portrait." It is noteworthy that Gogol lends both heroes an opportunity to speak up their highly moralistic and politically conservative speech. In conclusion, Gogol apparently strives to strengthen his artistic values that encompass moral ideas. Consequently, Gogol`s presence and desire are recognized in the image of artists he created in the revision.

This paper aims to explain several functions and roles of Russian particle Nu in terms of its character as a discourse marker, especially as a reception marker. According to the Discourse model, presented by Schiffrin, discourse marker Nu primarily operates on the layer of exchange structure and ideation structure. By letting the interlocutor keep the voice, the speaker shows his affirmative or negative reaction to the propositional content presented by the interlocutor or enlarges them by adding relevant sub-topics or expanding the discourse based upon them. This fact is true of not only the conversations, but also the monologues and narratives. Nu returns the discourse to the main topics and therefore makes the discourse more coherent even when the flux of the discourse diverges from the main topics. Especially, in narrative, it reminds readers of the smeared original main topic. Unlike vоt, serving as a devices to refer items or previous utterances and adding speakers` own emotional aspects to the discourse, Nu still remains and operates on the intra-linguistic layer. Moreover, speaker, using the discourse marker Nu asserts that he does not intend to become the deicter center of the discourse.

The paper deals with the correlation between syntactic and semantic valencies of Russian Emotion Predicates. There have been a couple of studies on the syntactic valencies of Russian Emotion Predicates, but they focus just on the morpho-syntactic aspect. However, we payed more attention to the semantic roles and the predicate meanings. The semantic role of "the Cause" is essential in the emotion sentences. It can be represented as an adjunct with the free prepositions "ot" and "iz-za" which are not subordinated to the predicates. On the other hand, the semantic role of "cause" of emotion can be a complement, which is closely related to the predicate meaning and can not be omitted. The "cause" of the emotion is divided into several subgroups: "the Stimulus", "the Causer or initiator of the situation", "the Object of thinking", "the Object of avoidance", "the Object of empathy" and "the Background Reason". In the Russian language the Stimulus takes dative case or "na+accusative case". The Causer takes instrumental case. The Object of avoidance takes genitive case. The Object of thinking takes "o+prepositional case" or "po+dative case". The Object of empathy and The Background reason take "za+accusative case". In most of the Russian emotion predicate constructions the syntactic valency depends on the meaning of Emotion Predicates, and the syntactic valencies are closely related to the subtypes of the cause in these constructions.

It`s been 73 years since the Korean Diaspora of Russia·CIS were forced to move to Middle Asia. In September, 1937, almost 170,000 of them were abruptly forced to leave behind the lands they`ve been living. After being forced to move into Middle Asia by the Soviet Union, they had no freedom to emigrate to any other places until a law named, "About measurements of restrictions on the legal status of residence of special emigrants", that gives the minimal right for them to emigrate, has been announced in 1956 by the supreme council of the Soviet Union. To the Korean Diaspora of Russia·CIS, this forced migration(deportation) took away everything they had until the very moment. Also it was a desperation for them since they couldn`t expect any help and they had to start a new life right in the middle of a wilderness. All these desperate circumstances wobbled their identity as Korean race. The deportation of the Korean Diaspora of Russia·CIS gave an big impact on change of their identities. It was also an big incident to deport an entire race that reaches 170,000 people. It`s not appropriate to think that this kind of big incidence happened only by couple of reasons. Rather, it would be right to think that there were so many reasons like political, social, cultural, economical, and several other reasons come together. These kind of various reasons have keep being influencing their politics, guidelines, and their identities even after the deportation. Nevertheless in-depth study of the reasons weren`t enough. The primary goal of this paper is to find and analyze the reasons of the deportation, and it would be an basis of studying the racial identity of them which would be the ultimate goal. Recently Russia is revealing some of the informations about the history of Soviet Union that was kept secret, showing that Russia is different from the Soviet Union and is a capitalistic and democratic country. That is, in order to free themselves from Soviet Union Russia is revealing the faults and shameful history of the Soviet Union. On this basis they`re revealing ome of the documents about the deportation of Korean Diaspora of Russia·CIS, and this is giving clues to find out the reasons of the deportation. In addition, easier contact with the Koreans dwelling in Russia and those people living in Korea made it possible for us to find out the reasons that were hidden deep inside. After the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991 and establishment of diplomatic relations with Russia in 1992, contacts with Korean Diaspora of Russia·CIS have become much more frequent. 70 years of alienation of political, economical, and cultural circumstances, however, made distinct boundaries between them and Koreans. These boundaries caused misunderstanding, making them to distrust Koreans, even though they are the same races. Understanding each others must be preceded in order to eliminate their distrust. The research analyzes the possible reasons of the deportation for the basis of a better comprehension of these people.
