A Study of Korean Raters` Characteristics for Foreign Speakers` Korean Oral Performance. Bilingual Research 55, 1-29. The study investigated the effects of raters` experience on the validity and reliability for foreign speakers` Korean speaking assessment. Twelve professional Korean and twelve non-professional Korean raters assessed twenty-seven Korean learners` oral performance. For the quantitative analysis the FACETS program with multi-facets Rasch model was carried out. The results are as follows: (1) professional raters tended to assess strictly rather than non-professional raters, (2) the strict assessment was realized on the open-ended response task, while the relaxed assessment was found on the opinion response and story-telling response tasks, and (3) both groups evaluated strictly on the grammar section, while they gave higher scores to the questions on the cohesive discourse section. The study also found that some professional raters caused problems of reliability and validity on their assessment. Other non-professional raters, on the other hand, tended to show over-fitted or under-fitted assessment. The result implies that raters should take the assessment training before participating in the real assessment.(Konkuk University·Seoul National University)

Korean-English Translation of Korean Modern Poetry. Bilingual Research 55, 31-49. The purpose of this paper is to examine how important the title is in the translation of Korean modern poetry. The Korean language is quiet different from the English language in linguistic characteristic. The difference between the two has caused a lot of difficulties in translating poems in literary text. For the example, the culture-specific items of the source text cannot be translated fully because they are different from those of target language. Therefore, the translators are asked to be the intermediaries who enable the users of the target language to understand the exotic elements of the source language. This paper has aimed at examining many cases of the poetry translation of Korean literature, which contain lots of cultural elements, as the basis for the analysis of the translation pattern and its strategy. The findings of this study are as follows. Firstly, the source text of Korean modern poetry has been translated into the target text in the English language by four translation patterns, such as literal translation, liberal translation, substitution and emprunt. The strategies used in the patterns have their strong and weak points respectively. In most cases of Korean-English translation of Korean modern poetry, the connotative meaning as well as the denotative meaning of poetic expressions has been successfully expressed but some cultural elements in the Korean language cannot be fully translated into English. Consequently, the deeper and continuous study of the translation of Korean poetry text is urgently needed to introduce the excellence of Korean poetry to the whole world. (Kwangwoon University)

Design Plan and Survey of Demand for an Acculturation Program for Korean Government Scholarship Students. Bilingual Research 55, 51-82. The purpose of this study is to propose a design plan for an acculturation program for Korean Government Scholarship Students. For that purpose, in-depth interviews, surveys to acknowledge acculturation stress and personal variable, and that of demands to design for acculturation programs were conducted. As a result, among factors of acculturation stress, homesickness was the highest rated factor that was applicable to students just one month after entering Korea. The survey of demand for the program in regards to the students who have spent over seven months in Korea have indicated that an acculturation program is needed to overcome future anxiety. After conducting in-depth interviews, students who have spent four to six months in Korea strongly needed a program to overcome communication difficulties. Students faced different difficulties depending on the duration of their stay in Korea. Thus, program design is required to consider the length of their stay. Also during in-depth interviews, students hoped to prepare the Test Of Proficiency In Korean(TOPIK) over summer, fall and winter semesters. Thus, designing special lectures during that particular semester seems appropriate. However, after examining closely the different needs for the program, personal variables, such as knowledge of Korean language prior to the entry to Korea, created diverse results, considering the fact that they were indeed the same Korean Government Scholarship Students.(Ewha Womans University)

A Study on the Aspects of Using Post-reading Activity Called ‘Identifying Specific Information’: Focusing on domestic undergraduate students and international undergraduate students. Bilingual Research 55, 83-109. The paper aimed to figure out the aspects of learners` reaction to the post-reading activity named as identifying specific information and it intended to find out educational implications which can be used in the real classroom. First of all, the study looked through the true value of teaching and learning post-reading activity called identifying specific information, which was considered as an undesirable activity in Korean language education. Secondly, the study examined different reaction patterns recognized between domestic undergraduate students and international undergraduate students in terms of identifying specific information. According to the result, domestic students usually recast and used different types of sentence to verify their understanding of reading passage. On the other hands, international students tended to retain sentence of original reading passage. As a result, the identifying specific information activity should be used after reading because it shows that learners are able to apply various strategies to recast new sentences. In addition, it is a similar activity with ‘paraphrasing’ in terms of producing new sentences. Therefore, various teaching methods related to the activity should be developed and it should be considered as a desirable activity which promotes learners` understanding and expression ability.(Korea University)

Research on Theme-centered Adaptation of Korean Text Books for Korean Heritage Children. Bilingual Research 55, 111-131. This paper aims to inform teachers of Korean heritage children about text books so they are able to adapt and use them effectively. The development of Korean text books through the support of the government, general purpose text book development and then localized text books through individual languages have developed continuously and this is extremely encouraging. However, despite these efforts, Korean text books for Korean heritage children do not reflect various Korean language teaching and learning conditions and the continuing problem of many cases where the learner`s real life relevance decreases. This research suggests a way to adapt their education where opinions and demands from Korean teachers aren`t suited. When adapting text books, it is necessary to base it on one specific principle and in this paper it is Korean heritage children combined with their Korean text book issues, focusing on improvement through ‘Theme-centered approach’. Suitability is brought to light and based on this a check list that can diagnose adaptation of Korean text book requests and the direction of adaptation plans were developed in an adaptation method. Lastly, using this, adaptation of Korean text books for overseas Korean children was attempted.(Kyung Hee University)

A Study on the Teaching Method of Metacognition Based on a Cognitive Monitoring Model: using Korean learning journal as a supplementary educational tool. Bilingual Research 55, 157-181. This study suggests a new approach to a teaching method of metacognition based on a cognitive monitoring model from Flavell(1979). Metacognition takes a core role in terms of making more efficient learning and its role can be more emphasized in the second/foreign language learning situation due to cognitive burden. So far, most of studies in the Korean language education field treated ‘metacognition’ as a subcategory of learning strategies. However, metacognitive strategies are not exactly the same notion with metacognition. Metacognitive strategies are the list of actions which occurs when people activate their metacognition to monitor their cognitive working. Thus, this paper aims to understand the way of activating metacognition based on the Flavell(1979)`s theory. In addition, the study proposes a teaching method for metacognition. In order to develop learners` metacognition and support their learning, the study uses learning journal as a supplementary tool, which can be an effective way to teach metacognition. And it also discusses about how to design the Korean learning journal in terms of supporting learners and activating their metacognition.(Korea University)

A Perception Study on Korean Denasalization. Bilingual Research 55, 183-218. This study aims to examine the linguistic characteristics of Korean denasalization. The nasals of Korean language are known to have less nasality. This paper presents a brief review of the characteristics of nasals in other languages undergoing denasalization as well as the causes of such denasalization. And this study conducted an identification and discrimination (AX) test that evaluated Korean language learners` perception of Korean nasals. As results, it is worth noting that the denasalization of Korean nasals occurred more in close vowels than open vowels and more in /n/ than /m/. The AX results showed that Koran nasals were phonetically different from those in English. It should be mentioned that speakers of Chinese language without voiced-voiceless contrast did not sensitively respond to the denasalization of Korean nasals, which is unlike speakers with non-English languages with voiced-voiceless contrast. One might infer from the results summarized above that the voiced-voiceless distinctive features existing within the phonemic system of a language play an crucial role in the perception of denasalization.(Daegu Cyber University·Seoul National University)

A Multilateral Review of Cultural Factors in Foreign Language Education. Bilingual Research 55, 219-247. This paper focuses on teachers` cultural competency as the center of the execution of cultural education in foreign language education. In order to develop training programs to strengthen the cultural capacity of current and future teachers, it is necessary to observe the cultural factors in the teaching-learning environment and identify their characteristics. This paper looks at the measurable elements in foreign language education including ‘the culture of learners’, ‘the culture of the teacher’, ‘culture as educational content’, ‘culture as a teaching-learning context’, and ‘the basic elements of culture’. These five elements, the aspects of their interaction, and their influence were examined closely in the teaching-learning environment. This research is expected to contribute to foreign language education in two ways. (1) In education theory, the understanding of the aspect of culture in foreign language education can be broadened and more deeply understood. (2) In applied use, a direction for enhancing culture competency in teacher education can be set, benefiting existing education programs. In addition, this research can be utilized in the proper development and provision of specialized cultural training programs focusing on the teaching practice of in-service teachers.(Sejong University)

A Study about Acculturation of amongst Foreign Exchange Student`s Korean Culture and Graduate School. Bilingual Research 55, 249-284. This paper aims to discover the aspect of acculturation of foreign exchange students that come to Korea to study in graduate school. Taking this as a foundation, suggestions on the direction of social relations between peers, professors and administrationists. The research was conducted through survey/interview of graduate students to investigate their cognition on Korea and culture within Korean graduate schools. According to the research results, the most difficult aspect of graduate school for the students were human relations. Especially, in comparison to their home country, they expressed difficulty in adapting to the culture of the various different meetings between a professor and graduate student and the existence of the senior and junior hierarchy in Korea. In addition, there were also indications of difficulty in the style of the way classes are conducted. Students advised that graduate courses were difficult as they were more presentation focused. Therefore, there is a need to share information in advance of the special cultural aspects of graduate student life in Korea to foreign exchange students. (Korea University)
