조기영어교육이 7세 아동의 모국어(한국어) 나레이티브에 미치는 영향: 복잡성, 정확성, 유창성 및 어휘사용양상을 중심으로

This study examined the influence of early English education on children’s narratives in L1 Korean. An oral story-telling task was conducted in Korean using a textless picture book “Frog Story” with twenty 7-year-old graduates of English-only kindergarten and another twenty regular Korean kindergarten graduates of the same age. The narrative data from the task were compared between the two groups in the aspects of complexity, accuracy, fluency and vocabulary use. The results revealed that there were no significant differences in fluency, complexity between the two groups. However, a significant difference was found in accuracy; the English-only kindergarten graduates spoke with more errors than the regular Korean kindergarten graduates. In addition, there was a significant difference in the use of foreign words between the two groups, but not in the use of Sino-Korean words. The English-only kindergarten graduates used more foreign words than regular kindergarten graduates. These resultsindicate that negative effects of early L2 English education on children’s L1 narrative is only limited to accuracy, but not to overall aspects of speaking, providing useful information based on empirical study for elementary school language teachers as well as parents of the children. 신문 사설에 나타난 다문화주의의 담론적 양상

This study aims to analyzemulticultural discourses of news editorials focusing on discursive aspects of multiculturalism in Korea since 2000. The analysis of multicultural discourses was based primarily on Kymlicka’s approaches to multiculturalism and Castles and Miller’s models of immigrant policies. The tendencies and characteristics of a multicultural discourse can be explained using three types of models: the differential exclusionary model, the assimilationist model, and the multicultural model. The discourse structures of the editorials embody a process of argumentation including circumstantial premises, values, claims and argument. Accordingly, discourse analysis of multicultural discourse reveals various conceptions or views of multiculturalism. The analysis shows that multicultural discourses in Korea have an assimilationist view and focus exclusively on multicultural families. The central claims of these discourses concern accepting immigrants in the name of multiculturalism, but their underlying values advocate assimilating immigrants into Korean culture and society. Korea’s multicultural discourses, therefore, do not accept the idea of multiculturalism but only reflect assimilationist views and treat multicultural issues selectively. Those issues are limited to antiracism and the civil rights of people from multicultural familiesrather than for immigrants as a whole. In light of other immigration societies’ experiences of conflicts arising from unilateral assimilation, Korea needs to further discuss and carefully reconsider the direction of its multicultural society. This study aims at examining how students learning korean for academic purposes use connective suffix in their writing. For learners who study korean for academic purposes, it is not easy to express their thoughts with a single sentence due to the fact that delivering information or their opinion requires their ability to think complicatedly to show what they have in mind exactly. In this context, this study focuses on how they use conjunctional suffixes (what suffix they use often and what grammatical errors they make). To become a college student in Korea, korean learners now should be at least in intermediate level. That``s why we choose them as the right range of learners to collect writings for this study. We have searched on their writings and analysed them in terms of variety and accuracy. After examining data of students who are in the beginning step in intermediate class, we have figured out that they show monotonous uses in terms of diversity. They often use single sentences, particular connective suffixes, and repetitional structures. In terms of accuracy, some of them feel difficult to understand grammar and make a distinction between grammars having similarity, or make an error when using sequence of sentences, compound sentences, and colloquial language. With this result, we could educate korean learners and help them find a way to expand their sentences. (Korea University)

대체(alternative)표현과의 비교대조에 근거한 문법화된 "-다니"의 한국어교육문법 기술

The purpose of this study is to suggest how to describe grammaticalized ‘-dani’ which has not been specifically explored in KFL(Korean as a Foreign Language). In peculiar, this study tries to show various functional meanings of ‘-dani’ in perspective of comparisons with its alternative expressions produced by KFL learners. The reason why this research would focus on alternative expressions is summarized as follows. First, alternative expressions are so difficult in both teaching and learning. Secondly, alternative expressions can give us insight for learner-oriented grammar education. In order to research alternative expressions of ‘-dani’ from learners’ grammatical appreciations, open-tests reflecting available communication situations related to ‘-dani’ have been made to learners. As a result, learners’ proper orinappropriate appreciations about ‘-dani’ have been revealed. Furthermore, since outstanding tendencies between ‘-dani’ and its alternative expressions could be found out, the descriptions based on comparisons in KFL grammar seem to be possible. These comparisons are to reveal shared parts as well as different parts between ‘-dani’ and its alternative expressions. These comparisons are expected to help learners distinguish ‘-dani’ and its similar expressions in both forms and functions. Also, results which show many learners’ misunderstanding about discourse-pragmatic restraints seems to require more specific descriptions about themselves in grammar because these are relatively complicated than morphological-syntactical restraints. This study offers a critical analysis of Korea’s discourse on English language teaching. To do this, I analyze a private elementary school``s prospectus about immersion program. This kind of discourse is practical argumentative discourse to claim that actor should act in a certain way. This discourse was analyzed by Fairclough and Fairclough’s (2012) framework. Through this analysis, it is revealed that the English immersion program discourses are based on these values such as efficiency, productivity, and private interest. Moreover, these values are identical with values for which global society is pursuing. In conclusion, linguistic imperialism and language ideology are embedded in discourse on English language teaching. (Yonsei University)

This study investigated Korean pronunciation proficiency development of Thai learners in SA(Study Abroad) and AH(At Home) learning contexts, and examined the effects of learner variables on the pronunciation proficiency. The pronunciation proficiency was divided into four areas; fluency, comprehensibility, accuracy, and global foreign accent. The study applied pre and post-pronunciation test for 11 Thai learners in Korea and 21 learners in Thailand taking a 10-week Korean course. The study also employed the LCP(Language Contact Profile) questionnaire to analyze influential factors on learners`` pronunciation proficiency. The main findings are: (i) SA learners did a significant development in all four areas of pronunciation proficiency, while AH learners did a significant development in only fluency and accuracy areas; (ii) Multiple regression analyses revealed that duration of interaction in Korean influences SA learners`` pronunciation proficiency in all areas, while duration of discussion in Korean and duration of Korean language awareness outside classroom influence AH learners`` pronunciation fluency. 재미 동포의 언어 정체성과 한국어 능력에 대한 세대별 비교 분석 연구

The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the language use patterns of Korean-Americans by comparing the characteristics of 1st, 1,5th and 2nd generation in the USA. The data revealed that there is significant difference between the perception on the necessity of the language proficiency and the perception on the language identity. Korean Americans perceive the necessity of English proficiency is slightly stronger than the necessity of Koreanproficiency. This result reflects that Korean Americans generally put more importance on the language of their residential country and it is not different from the previous research results on Korean residents in China and the CIS. However, the percentage of Koreans who perceive Korean language as their mother tongue is higher in the US, comparing to China and the CIS. Therefore, Korean Americans show more positive perception on Korean language and culture than English and American culture. Based on the analysis by the immigrant generation variable, the first-generation immigrants show high proficiency in Korean language in all areas, whereas the second-generation immigrants show the opposite results. For the 1.5th generation immigrants, there was no significant difference between their Korean and English language proficiency. The variable of the immigrant generation was the most significant variable to the language use of Korean Americans due to the uniqueness of Korean American society where different generations are still residing closely and where there is still active inflow of first-generation immigrants from Korea to the US. This phenomenon is unlike other Korean residents in China and the CIS and will be a positive evidence of maintaining Korean in the USA. (Yonsei University)

미국 대학 KFL 학습자의 한국어 학습 전략 연구

본 연구는 미국 대학 KFL 학습자들의 한국어 학습 전략 양상을 분석하여 KFL 학습자의 언어 학습 전략을 이해하고 교육적 시사점을 얻고자 하였다. 이를 위해 미국 대학에서 한국어 과목을 수강중인 127명의 학습자를 대상으로 언어 학습 전략 조사 목록(SILL)을 활용하여 학습자의 한국어 학습 전략을 조사한 후 이를 범주별, 문항별로 분석하였다. 범주별 분석 결과, 기존 ESL/EFL 및 KSL 연구 결과와는 달리 미국 대학의 KFL 학습자들은 6개의 SILL 전략 범주 중 상위인지전략을 가장 높은 빈도로 사용하며 사회적 전략, 인지적 전략, 기억 전략, 보상 전략, 정의적 전략 순으로 한국어 학습 전략을 많이 사용하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 간접 전략을 직접적 전략보다 높은 빈도로 사용하고 있었다. 다음으로 51개의 SILL 문항별로 분석한 결과, 18개 항목은 높은 수준,28개 항목은 중간 수준, 5개 항목은 낮은 수준의 사용 빈도를 보였는데, 구어 관련 전략에 비해 문어 관련 전략은 상당히 낮게 나타나는 특징을 보였다. 또한 상위 10개 문항에는 4개의 상위인지 전략, 3개의 인지 전략, 2개의 사회적 전략, 1개의 기억 전략 항목이 있었으며 보상 전략 및 정의적전략은 포함되지 않았다. 상위 10개 문항 중 한국의 문화 관련 전략이 두항목 포함된 점이 특징적이었다. 또한 자신의 학습을 관리하는 측면의 상위인지전략은 상위 10개 문항에 다수 포함된 반면, 학습과 관련해서 스스로 자신에게 상을 주거나 학습 과정의 느낌을 표현하는 정의적 측면의 항목들은 하위 10개 문항에 포함되었다. 이러한 범주별, 항목별 전략 사용빈도 양상은 미국 내 KFL 학습자 및 학습 환경의 특성을 반영하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그 동안 한국어 교육 연구에서는 대부분 KSL 환경에서 언어 학습 전략 연구가 이루어져 왔고 영어를 L1으로 하는 학습자에 대한 전략 연구는 드물었다. 따라서 이러한 미국 내 KFL 학습자의 한국어 학습 전략에 대한 연구는 학습자에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓혀 줄 수 있으며, 학습자들이 자신의 학습 전략을 인식하고 보다 적극적으로 활용할 수 있도록 하는 교육적 자료가 될 것이다. Reading education for Koreanlanguage majors in China is required to motivate and increase the interests of learners, improve reading skills, and allow students to acquire a positive attitude and enthusiasm in reading. In addition, the texts should reflect and share beliefs, knowledge, and values, and allow learners to indirectly experience and further apply them within the everyday communicative context. This can be meaningful as the goals of reading education enable learners to read and transcend in time and space, which in turn, will facilitate the chance to participate in future opportunities of related fields in Korea. Needs analysis was conducted among current Korean major students and students who have graduated with aims of finding implications for developing appropriate texts that reflect the learners’ needs. The reading Textbooks for Korean majors should be equipped with features as follows. Fist of all, it should consist of a wide range of subjects and texts in order to have knowledge and refinement Korean majors must have. In addition, the textbook should deal with not only cultural texts for successful communication in the future workplace, but also the contents concerning politics, economy and society. 학문 목적 한국어 학습자의 읽기 동기 구성 요인 연구

Present study aims to examine the components which construct motivations of KAP learners for their reading activity. For this study, totally 196 responses for the questionnaire from Korean learners in country (Korea) or overseas were collected and analyzed. The result reveals that their major reading motivators can be summarized as ‘self-efficacy or utility value’, ‘competition-reward’, ‘integrated motivation’ and ‘academic performance’. 196 subjects for this study can be divided by 4 sub-groups, and each group shows its different dominant reading motivators. Overall, the group in country indicates relatively higher motivation level than overseas group. In both groups, ‘competition-reward’ was the highest reading motivator and ‘integrated motivators’ and ‘academic performance’was relatively lower than other motivating components. It implies that even adult learners tend to prefer immediate reward such as compliments from others to internal reward or academic grade. Overseas group is classified into advanced group before college entrance, undergraduate and graduate group. The learners in undergraduate group demonstrate higher motivation in general. This study encompasses numerous leaners invarious settings as subject who can represent current state of KAP learning environments. The study on reading motivator of KFL learners has been scarce. In particular, there has been little quantitative research with theextensive subjects investigating various components which consist of learner motivation regarding reading activity.
