This study was to test the effect of bilingual abilities to school life adjustment of adolescents in multi-cultural families along with the mediating effect of self-esteem and self-resilience. From the data of Multi-cultural Adolescents Panel Study(MAPS) that surveyed 1,645 middle school students, 1,300 observations under Korean father and foreigner mother were taken for analysis. It was found that bilingual ability had significant effects on their adjustment in school life partially mediated by self-esteem and self-resilience. It was discussed that in order for the adolescents in multi-cultural families to adjust well at school, they were to be enhanced with respect to self-esteem and self-resilience at home first. The current study aims to provide ways to develop Korean educational curriculum based on the needs of the international faculties. Most of the international faculties seek the necessity of Korean language class developed for them to provide a better educational environment for their students. They also have wanted to take a Korean language class that focuses on campus activities and research activities as well as faculty regulations and titles. Most importantly, it is shown that they prefer to learn to read, listen and comprehend Korean above all the other language techniques. Thus, it is critical to educate the international faculties Korean through utilizing the reading and listening materials. (Ewha Womans University)

This study aims to suggest efficient methods for using flipped learning to teach Korean culture to foreign learners in liberal arts classes at Korean universities. It is the general perception that the importance of culture is significantly growing for foreign learners adapting to their lives in college and Korean society. However, the reality of cultural and liberal arts classes for foreign learners at universities is that most of them are large-scale lectures where the instructor unilaterally teaches the predetermined content to students without direct interaction; therefore, it is difficult to elucidate the practical educational significance of such classes. Considering these challenges, this study focuses on alleviating the anxiety and fear of foreign students at a university who will soon enter Korean society and assists them in successfully adapting to life in Korea. Therefore, this study presented the flipped learning model by broadly classifying the stages as follows: the before-class - online knowledge acquisition stage; the in-class lecture - interactive cultural capacity enhancement stage; and the extra-class cultural capacity practicing stage. This study also examined the definition, characteristics, and significance of Korean cultural education through flipped learning, while presenting the flipped learning teaching guide using various video materials for the before-class stage as well as diverse activities during class. 한국어 학습자의 문장 구조 다양화를 위한 관형절 내포문 사용 양상 연구

The purpose of this study presents the useful contents for teaching adnominal embedded clauses, which diversify Korean sentence structures used by Korean learners. For achieving this goal, this study gave the task converting from 13 simple sentences, 5 conjunctive sentences, and 2 quotations into 20 adnominal embedded clauses to 115 Korean undergraduates and 394 foreign undergraduates in four universities, and then analyzed the adnominal embedded clauses extracted from the task. This analysis showed that foreign undergraduates have difficulty in converting from conjunctive sentences or quotations into adnominal embedded clauses. Also, most of them can not make clear the difference between relative clause and complementary clause. Besides, disagreement between subject and predicate occurs frequently in [noun phrase-i/ga ‘adnominal embedded clause+noun’-ida] construction. Based on this error analysis, four kinds of solutions for reducing the errors in adnominal embedded clauses are suggested as follows. First of all, ‘-daneun’ needs to be explicitly presented as one of the adnominal endings. Secondly, the function of quotation in ‘-daneun’ complement should be clearly presented with ‘-dago hada’. Thirdly, complementary nouns should be presented with complementary endings such as ‘-neun/eun/eul’ or ‘-daneun’. Lastly, the practice expanding noun phrase and the practice converting from verb phrase to noun phrase need to be connected while teaching the agreement between subject and predicate in [noun phrase-i/ga noun phrase-ida] construction. 한국 인터넷 신문 헤드라인의 중국어 번역 양상 연구 -<동아일보>와 <한겨레>를 중심으로-

With the development of the internet, online news has become the key for modern people to obtain information. For Korean learners, it is also one of the important methods to understand current affairs and culture in Korea. At present, major news websites in Korea have started to provide Chinese services. With accurate and appropriate translations, these Chinese-Korean news headlines can become good learning aids. This paper selects some news headlines in The DONG-A ILBO and The Hankyoreh, analyzes their linguistic features, compares them with Chinese translations, summarizes their translation characteristics and points out the problems in translation. 발화 조절에 따른 한국어 모음의 음성적 특징과 오류 양상 분석

The present study was to investigate the extent to which clear speech is an effective intelligibility enhancement strategy for non-native speakers of Korean. Ten Chinese advanced learners were participated in speech production test. Acoustic differences between clear speech (CL) and conversational speech (CON) of Korean monophthongs were measured on durations, f1 and f2 values, vowel quadrilateral spaces, and the vowel identification test was evaluated. The results were as follows: (1) the paired t-test on durations showed a statistical significance between CL and CON, which means the durations of CL were longer than those of CON. (2) The two-way repeated measure ANOVA was conducted that examined the effect of vowels and utterance levels on vowel quadrilateral area (Hz²). The vowel spaces of CL were even larger than those of CON across all seven vowels. (3) the vowel identification scores of individual tokens demonstrated the similar error rates for both CL and CON. Although it is important to understand speech accommodation effect for speech clarity, these results suggest that the expanded temporal and spectral properties may not guarantee the accuracy of listeners’ identification of vowels. Other factors (e.g., learners’ anxiety) affecting second language acquisition should be discussed for further research. (Daegu Cyber University)

베트남어권 초급 학습자의 한국어 폐쇄음 지각

This study is to investigate how the beginner Korean language learners who speak Vietnamese perceive the Korean stops through perception experiments with an OpenSesame and a questionnaire. Subjects (6 female, 3 male) heard 108 stimuli consisting of Korean stops and then selected corresponding Korean phonemes. The results showed 383 (39.4%) perceptual errors from 972 response and the error rate is in the order of bilabial ≥ velar > alveolar consonants; fortis ≥ lenis > aspirated consonants and CV > VCV, but the combining vowels ‘a, i, and u’ did not significantly affect the perception of consonants. The Questionnaire on the phonological awareness showed that subjects transfer or reinterpret L2 phoneme with a similar L1 and split or coalesce L2 phonemes which are absent in L1. These results indicate that aspirated consonants are easy to perceive whereas it is difficult to distinguish between fortis and lenis due to the inadequate L2 perceptual categorization. Therefore, learners should be instructed to be conscious of distinctive acoustic characteristics and allophonic phenomena in the phonological environment. (Korea University)

학문목적 학습자의 상호문화 의사소통 능력 함양을 위한 상호문화 감수성 연구

The purpose of the study aimed to examine the intercultural sensitivity of Chinese language learners with an academic purpose attending Korean universities and to extract the educational components that needs in training programs for developing Intercultural Communication Competence(ICC). As the intercultural sensitivity measurement tool, the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale(ISS) developed by Chen & Startosta(2000) was used after being modified for the Korean context. For the statistical processing, SPSS Win Ver. 24 program was used. T-test and one-way ANOVA were partially used, and the reliability was verified using the Cronback-α through a posteriori test. The overall average of the intercultural sensitivity of the research participants was 3.64, which was satisfactory on the 5 point Likert scale. In the lower five categories, the average score of respect for cultural differences was the highest(M=4.08), and the intercultural confidence was the lowest(M=3.20). Based on the results of the intercultural sensitivity measurement, six factors related to behavioral domain of intercultural communication competence that predicts conflict and misunderstanding and respond to them sensitively and flexibly were deducted. These factors are designed for stimulus factors that can be included in the training of intercultural communication competence development. The six factors were designated as stimulus variables, and the adequacy was tested using factor analysis and regression analysis. The six factors deducted through the test results were revealed to be stimulus factors with significant explanatory power, having the ability to statistically explain the correlation of intercultural sensitivity and intercultural communication competence. A follow-up study proved that the six factors extracted in the present study must be included in designing training programs for intercultural sensitivity and intercultural communication competence. A further study is needed to expand the design of intercultural sensitivity development training for learners of the Korean language thus they can develop Korean language communication skills appropriately and effectively for intercultural communication. Furthermore, in order to develop intercultural sensitivity, further studies on realistic education methodology from intercultural education perspective based on intercultural communication competence must be continued. 국외 한국어 교사의 자질에 대한 학습자 인식 연구 -미국 대학의 한국어 교육을 중심으로-

This study attempted to characterize qualities of an effective Korean language teacher in the U.S. perceived by U.S. college students. For this purpose, a survey was conducted to 190 learners of Korean at university in the U.S. The results of this study indicate that (a) the students deemed teacher’s mastery of the target language to be more important than teacher’s nativeness; (b) the students found it more important for teachers to understand students’ different cultural background than to understand American culture; (c) the students gave weight to giving good feedback and clear criteria; (d) the students agreed upon the importance of teaching Korean in Korean, however, they disagreed about the effectiveness of ‘teaching only in Korean’ in class; (e) the students perceived that Korean teachers were more approachable, understanding, patient, and creating a greater bond with students comparing to teachers of other subjects. The results of this study will help (a) training program for teachers who will be dispatched overseas and (b) hiring decision of Korean instructors in the US. (Korea University)

한국어 계승어 화자의 장형 부정문 습득

이 연구는 미국에 거주하고 한국어를 계승언어로 배우는 재미교포 화자들이 한국어 장형 부정문을 완전하게 습득하는지 살펴봄으로써 계승언어의 불완전한 습득 및 언어 손실에 취약성을 결정하는 요인 중 언어 현상의 습득 순서, 빈도수, 그리고 유표성이 영향을 미치는지 조사한다. 한국어 장형 부정문은 모국어 습득에서 상대적으로 늦게 만 3세 이후 습득되며 보다 간단한 단형 부정문으로 대체될 수 있기 때문에 계승어 화자들이 이 구조를 불완전하게 습득 할 것으로 예측된다. 계승어 화자들이 한국어 부정문을 어떻게 이해하고 사용하는지 알아보기 위해 구두 및 필기 시험을 분석해 본 결과, 장형 부정문보다 단형 부정문의 사용을 선호하며 장형부정문의 대체적인 구조를 이해하고 있지만 문법적인 속성의 이해가 부족하여 모국어 화자들과 유의미한 차이를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 계승어 화자들의 발화문과 문법성 판단 패턴에 높은 불확실성을 살펴볼 수 있었고 비문을 수용하는 경향이 강하게 나타났다. 따라서 이 연구의 결과는 상대적으로 늦게 습득되며 대체가능한 문법 구조가 있는 장형부정문은 계승언어의 불완전한 습득 또는 손실에 취약한 문법 영역임을 시사한다.
