The purpose of this study is to present case of speaking education in Korean language department of Chinese university using ZOOM, an interactive real-time online platform, and responses of learners who completed one semester to reveal that ZOOM can be an appropriate platform for speaking education in online classes initiated due to COVID 19. For successful progress of online classes, it is most important to choose appropriate online platforms suit to course characteristics before class, and quality of lecturer of being familiar with and skillfully utilizing the selected platform is essential. Learning materials and supplementary materials need to be adapted to online class situation and media devices and equipment enhancing efficiency of online class are also required. During class, it is necessary to try various activities using online platforms with appropriate learner control. This study reveals through real-life examples that pair activities or assessments using ZOOM breakout rooms and video assignments or video feedback using ZOOM recording function are effective in enhancing Korean language skill of leaners. Finally, this study conducts a survey of 1st and 2nd grade learners who completed online Korean speaking class for one semester and analyzes subjective responses over course evaluation into positive and negative responses. Given that learners’ positive responses are dominant over negative responses, ZOOM, an interactive real-time online platform, can be quite effective when Korean speaking classes are conducted online. In this paper, the current status of Korean language institutions affiliated with universities in Korea was analyzed. Starting with Yonsei University’s Korean Language Institute, the Korean language institutions affiliated with universities in Korea has spread to universities in the Seoul metropolitan area and regions since the 2000s. Most institutions operate for four semesters a year and 10 weeks and 200 hours per semester, reflecting exams, attendance, attitudes, assignments, occasional evaluations and participation in their grades. In addition, it was found that there were many institutions that set the standard of completion with an attendance rate of 80% and a score of 70, and there were 28 institutions with self~developed textbooks. Based on this, I would like to propose the following tasks. First, contents related to regular courses should be disclosed and managed on the homepage of educational institutions. Second, it is necessary to share and discuss various ways and forms of operation of different Korean language courses for each institution. Finally, it is necessary to design a regular curriculum or teaching materials with reference to the International Standard Curriculum for Korean Language. (Silla University)

An experiment was conducted to investigate the roles of semantic transparency and context in reading L2 words by Korean-Chinese bilingual children in Yanbian, China. Participants were selected from second, fourth, and sixth grade classes and divided into two groups according to L2 proficiency. Participants were given novel L2 compound words and asked to decide the meaning of each word by choosing one among four alternatives. Half of the novel L2 words were semantically transparent and the other half were opaque, and each word was given in a null, weak, or strong contextual sentence. The results revealed that response accuracy was higher for semantically transparent words than semantically opaque words. Contextual information was also found to affect the understanding of word meaning. With strong context, the accuracy to decide the correct meaning of words was higher, except second and sixth graders. For second graders, no contextual effect was found, showing less semantic knowledge and poor skills to use context information, while sixth graders showed significant context effect only for semantically opaque words but not for semantically transparent words, indicating the rich morphological knowledge and skills. In conclusion, the results support that elaborated morphological knowledge is as critical in improving the understanding of L2 words as skills of exploiting contextual information. This research is to prove the effectiveness of learning vocabulary when the Korean beginners were practiced incidental vocabulary acquisition in a second language via reading elaborated texts and repeating exposures to vocabularies. Vocabulary learning effectiveness is defined as the learner’s effectiveness to acquiring spelling, meaning, and usage of the vocabularies and reading comprehension. As a result, the incidental vocabulary acquisition in a second language had the most positive effect on acquiring spelling of the vocabulary. The positive results were followed by correct usage of the word in sentences, finding synonyms, and writing the meaning in the native language, respectively. In addition, the incidental vocabulary acquisition in a second language showed significant result to content reading comprehension. Previous researches mainly dealt the incidental vocabulary acquisition in a second language with intermediate or advanced learners, while this research is meaningful as it targeted beginners in Korean language. The purpose of this study is to examine the trends of web-based research in the field of Korean language education in order to suggest the direction of future research. This study analyzed 282 web-based Korean education studies based on three criteria: research general, research subject, and research topic. First of all, in ‘research general’, web-based Korean education research has grown quantitatively and qualitatively since the late 90s. In particular, as of 2010, when the use of smart devices became common, web-based Korean education research showed marked increase. Next, in ‘research subjects’, there were an overwhelmingly large number of studies for general purpose learners and all levels. Lastly, in ‘research topics’, the ‘teaching-learning method’ of research using the web was most frequently conducted. Also, in the teaching-learning tool, studies regarding MALL were rapidly increasing. Through this analysis, this study suggested the direction of future research as follows. First, future research should be able to verify their educational effectiveness. Second, in order to verify them, commercialization is needed through collaboration with educational engineering, computer engineering, and AI-related businesses. Third, research is required based on various learning purposes, needs, and variables of Korean learners. Fourth, it is necessary to study ways to increase the learning motivation of self-learning users. Fifth, there is a need for research on ways to activate the interaction between teachers and learners on the web. Sixth, it is necessary to study application development that fully reflects the specificity and advantages of MALL. (Korea University, The Cyber University of Korea, Korea University)

The purpose of this study is to suggest the performance tasks based on backward design as a teaching and learning method for Korean language education for KSL students. To accomplish this, the core contents of backward design model was analyzed, the procedures of the backward design method was reviewed for constructing a task for Korean language education for KSL students. By setting the Korean language performance task according to the backward design model that emphasizes the knowledge applicable to the actual context, it is effective for KSL students to acquire the knowledge transferable to real life as well as the “Perpetual understanding” of language learning around the main idea. In this paper, the presentations and fairy tale productions using comparison and contrast expressions on the theme of ‘culture’ are designed to enable children learners living in a multicultural era to learn linguistic knowledge and cultural attitudes as integrated activities. In addition, specific teaching plans and rubrics for evaluation were presented, and the plans for applying these teaching / learning plans to the actual educational field were discussed. This study investigated how advanced L2 learners of Korean process case marking and verbal anomalies in visually situated sentence processing. Behavioral and neural responses were examined through an ERP experiment using a picture-sentence verification task with 17 advanced Chinese learners of Korean. Three conditions were compared: congruence, case-marking incongruence, and verbal incongruence. While the behavioral results showed no significant differences across conditions with high accuracy rates and similar reading times, the ERP results revealed different neural responses; case-marking anomalies elicited early negativity around 100ms post-onset of the case marker and N400 at the sentence-final verb, whereas verbal anomalies elicited N400 at the sentence-final verb with higher amplitude. The ERP results indicate that, similarly to native Korean speakers, advanced L2 learners process the two types of linguistic anomalies differently, processing case markers earlier than verbal meaning. The findings suggest that processing mechanism of L2 learners can develop to the extent that it resembles that of native speakers. In the curricula of Korean language departments at Chinese universities, major courses can be divided into those focusing on the learning of Korean and content courses such as Korean history, Korean politics and economy, and Korean culture, among others. Because learners who study Korean in China do not have a matching linguistic environment, opportunities to learn Korean outside of class are very rare. In order to provide learners with more time to be exposed to the Korean language, it is necessary to create opportunities for learning Korean not only in language classes but also in content courses. Moreover, findings ways to learn Korean in content courses, such as Korean history, will help to change the ongoing system, which establishes a dichotomy between language courses and content courses, thus expanding the scope of Korean language education at Chinese universities and establishing a systematic curriculum that combines language and content. In addition, Content-Based Korean history course can develop learners’ language skills while also playing an important role in improving their academic proficiency. Therefore, this study aims to find efficient ways to teach Korean history via Content-Based Instruction for Chinese learners who majoring in the Korean language at Chinese universities. For this purpose, this paper introduces the characteristics of Korean history research and education in China and then examines the current status of Korean history education as taught by Korean departments of Chinese universities. The study then defines and provides a brief overview of the different types of Content-Based Instruction. Next, the educational objectives of Korean history course are presented, dividing them into content-based objectives and language educational objectives, and five principles for selecting educational content are proposed. Finally, based on the Into, Through and Beyond models, the steps of classroom teaching are presented, with the “March 1st Movement” presented as an example of providing specific educational practice. Analyzing the content courses of Korean language departments at Chinese universities, which have not much received attention thus far, can be seen as an attempt to expand and extend Korean language education. In particular, it is meaningful to focus on Korean history course and to seek specific education plans that combine language and content learning. (Seoul National University)

The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean native speakers’ acceptability on pragmatic failure of American Korean learners’ non-verbal behaviors. Korean’s pragmatic judgement on unmarked non-verbal behaviors in USA was examined. A survey of a total of 22 Korean native speakers was conducted. Each questionnaire item consisted of a 6-point Likert scale and an open-ended question, and the responses were analysed in SPSS 26.0 and Nvivo 12 Pro. The results indicate that Korean speakers’ pragmatic acceptability was varied in all 6 situations according to the difference of non-verbal behaviors, and also it was statistically significant. Unmarked non-verbal behaviors in USA were considered pragmatic failures by Korean native speakers, and it was more salient in the case of a factor of high social status or the high degree of face-threat in speech acts. As a whole, the pedagogic implication focusing on pragmatic failure-expected items in non-verbal behaviors was suggested, and the necessity of including cultural aspects in language education was discussed. This research examines the Korean synthetic complexity of the fast growing number of immigrant youths entering Korea through collecting two composition materials which are writing after watching a short clip and diary writing during three month period. While both quantitative and qualitative analyzes are used, for quantitative method, words per writing, words per sentence and embedded clauses per writing were analyzed and for qualitative method, usage patterns and errors of coordinate and embedded clauses were analyzed. As a result, two out of three learners showed a steady increase in producing complex sentences and the other learner who had a relatively rapid syntactic development showed a U-shaped curve. Furthermore, there was a difference in using complex sentences and frequency within the learners in both dairy and short video clip writing. In detail, all three learners used time adverb clauses, and reason or cause adverb clauses the most and noun, adnominal and quotation clauses were only used in certain forms. Lastly, time adverb clause ‘-go’ and ‘-(ah)seo/(uh)seo’ were the mostly used adverb clauses but also at the same time the error of overgeneralization was detected. (Seoul National University)
