The current study investigates the blending of names in English. Using data of pairing names from the Internet fandom sites of the Harry Potter series, this study describes the phonological and morphological features of name blends in English and compares them with those of lexical blends. It is shown that name blending is constrained by similar phonological constraints regulating lexical blending such as maximization of input segments and segmental overlaps. On the other hand, it is found out that the length of name blends generally corresponds to that of the longer source words, not to that of the right-hand source word. From the morphological perspective, it is pointed out that name blending shows the development of paradigms possibly leading to putative splinters, just as lexical blending. (Sangmyung University)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the different types of politeness strategies that are used between the different participants based on the theory of politeness strategy put forward by Brown and Levinson(1987), in relation to U.S. Presidential debates. A televised debate from the 2016 American Presidential Election was chosen for the data analysis. A total of 918 thought units were analyzed, and the results showed that positive politeness strategies were used most by both participants. In the case of Clinton, the positive politeness strategies were used overwhelmingly. However, bald on record was the second most highly used and the difference between the first and second was a small margin in the utterance of Trump. In the negative strategies, questions and hedges were used most in both candidates. In off record strategies, both candidates frequently used overstate. As politically damaging information towards both candidates was revealed before the debate, the debaters performed face threatening acts primarily to attack the positive public image of their opponent. The purpose of this study is to investigate how well elementary school pre-service teachers recognize sentence stress in 48 intonational phrases of four discourses. A total of 66 juniors of a University of Education participated in this study and took a sentence stress marking test. The results revealed that the participants marked only 39.5% of sentence stress correctly. The error analysis of the wrong sentence stress showed that the main reason was not knowing the unmarked and contrastive sentence stress rules properly. Based on the findings of this study, the recognition of sentence stress should be covered in the English pronunciation course along with sentence stress production. Literature should be valued in our homes and schools for the enrichment it gives to the personal lives of children, as well as for its proven educational contributions. This study analyzed various reading materials especially related to literature according to genres and subgenres followed by the classification of Fisher(1990). The term genre refers to a type of literature, and within different genres we find subgenres. Moreover, this study introduced resources of teaching for children’s literature in order of fiction, fantasy, traditional stories, poetry, and nonfiction based on Huck’s brilliant book(2001). Furthemore, also this study suggests that if teachers know a variety of children’s literature by genres and subgenres, they can teach English reading with adjustment to children’s personal preference and so manage their English reading class more effectively. The purpose of this study is to examine the translation patterns of affirmative English sentences into negative Korean sentences. In this way, negative words are inserted when translated into Korean. This study was conducted by classifying and analyzing the addition of negatives to English-Korean translation into four types of English-Korean parallel corpus. First, when stative verbs are translated, negatives can be found inserted in the sentence to reveal the opposite of the will of the subject. Second, negative words are inserted when translating gradable adjectives in English into Korean to reveal the speaker's intentions through the effect of semantic dilution. Third, not only verbs or prepositions that already imply negation but adverbs with limited meaning in the source language are translated with negatives. Lastly, characteristics of result-oriented Korean language, the more specific explanation of semantic implication, and clarification of the main meaning lead to the insertion of the negatives in the process of translating. Language is communicated through discourse which consists of texts between a speaker and a hearer. This paper aims to describe modal verbs that are uttered in hospitality English on the basis of Wilson and Sperber’s(2012) relevance theory. This paper shows the meaning and function of English modal verbs used in the hospitality English which represent various meanings relying on the discourse contexts. Moreover, we suggest that the meaning and function of modal verbs based on the relevance theory has to be taught to learners in hospitality English. (Chungwoon University)

재난재해 소셜 미디어 텍스트 감성분석을 위한 키워드 노이즈 제거 방법론 연구

This study proposes a methodology for constructing linguistic resources in order to eliminate irrelevant keywords from social media texts related to disasters, such as earthquakes or typhoons. When collecting disaster-related social media texts for sentiment analysis, a large number of noisy keywords metaphorically used, such as ‘pupil-earthquake = astonishment,’ is observed. In this regard, filtering these linguistic noisy expressions plays a crucial role in performing an accurate text classification or sentiment analysis. In this study, two types of linguistic patterns are examined for filtering noisy expressions in natural & social disaster-related texts, and a bootstrap method based on the DECO Korean electronic dictionary and Local-Grammar Graph(LGG) formalism is suggested. In this way, for six keywords, around 110~ 470 patterns per keyword are described in LGGs. By applying them to a new corpus through the DECO Noise-Filter platform, we obtained about 88.4% f-measure. The methodology suggested in this study may be adopted in filtering other types of noisy expressions, which will improve the reliability of the performance of sentiment analysis of social media texts. Effects of Two Different Grammar Instruction Approaches Depending upon EFL Learners’ Grammar Knowledge

The present study aims at investigating the effects of two grammar instruction approaches in the development of EFL learners’ grammar knowledge and in learning of four grammar types, along with their perception of the approaches, depending upon their grammar knowledge level. For the study, 88 college students were divided into two groups according to their grammar knowledge. The results were that 1) low-level learners obtained a better result in the deductive approach, but not in the inductive one, while high-level learners failed to show any differences in both approaches; 2) no differences were found between the post-test scores of each grammar type in both approaches, and among the four types, articles were found to be the most difficult one in both approaches, whereas verbs revealed the most largest differences between pre- and post-tests in both approaches; and 3) they showed some similarities and differences in their perception of the benefits and drawbacks of each approach. Acoustic Features of English Fricatives Produced by Chinese EFL Learners at Different English Proficiency Levels

This study acoustically analyzes the production of English fricatives (/f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /s/, /z/, /∫/, /ʒ/) by ten native speakers from the United States and 40 Chinese EFL learners (of various English proficiency levels). Six acoustic parameters proved to be capable of distinguishing places of articulation, voicing and vowel contexts from previous studies are considered: spectral mean (M1), variance (M2), skewness (M3), kurtosis (M4), relative amplitude and normalized duration. The statistical results reveal that: Firstly, the six acoustic parameters work differently in distinguishing places of articulation, voicing, and vowel contexts between native speakers and advanced learners and beginners. The effect of vowel context becomes weaker with the improvement of L2 proficiency. Secondly, Chinese EFL learners demonstrate significant differences in acoustic features with native speakers in English fricative production, which indicates that Chinese EFL learners face challenges in producing native-like English fricatives. Besides, advanced learners are found to demonstrate a performance more similar to native speakers (less significant differences in acoustic characteristics with native speakers) than beginners. Lastly, segmental substitutions errors of /v/-/w/ and /ʒ/-/r/ are observed in Chinese EFL learners. (Wonkwang University)
