This paper investigates how the American conception of nature has changed throughout the first half of the 20th century, by examining the ecological ideas of Aldo Leopold, Mary Austin, and Edward Abbey. Leopold`s land ethic is not his own invention but a summary of the ecological ideas of the time. The core of the land ethic says that land is not a commodity but a community of which man is not a conqueror but a plain member. Austin`s idea of the intrinsic value of all things in nature and the interconnectedness of man and nature in The Land of Little Rain are incorporated into Leopold`s conception of community, while her ecofeminist and bioregional vision opens a new way of perceiving nature both for Leopold and Abbey. Abbey`s ecological ideas and his call for activism are a radical development of ecocentricism expounded by Austin and Leopold. These writers make it clear that without the transition of our ideas toward nature from anthropocentricism to ecocentricism, we cannot guarantee our own survival. (Sungkyunkwan University)

This study investigates effective models of team teaching in Korean middle school classrooms based upon two English achievement tests and two English listening tests. The data from 280 first-year middle school students were collected and compared between team teaching (TT) types. The findings of the present study are as follows: First, the results of the English achievement tests and English listening tests between the students who took TT of a native English Teacher (NET) and a Korean English Teacher (KET) and those who didn`t take TT showed significant differences. After practicing TT class, a NET-led class with a KET`s active support showed an obvious difference compared to NET-led class with a KET`s passive support in the second English listening test. Second, NET leading classes with the KET`s active facilitation showed the highest improvement in both tests. These findings indicate that TT practiced classes, especially in the balanced co-operation between both teachers, is greatly efficient to develop Korean middle school students` English communicative competence. This study also gives both NETs and KETs perspectives on effective TT types and the opportunities to reconsider the issues related to their TT. (Daejeon Oesam Middle School)

The purpose of the paper is to investigate Korean pre-service English teachers` foreign language classroom anxiety and foreign language teaching anxiety. For the purpose, 137 pre-service teachers` anxiety was measured by using FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) and FLTAS (Foreign Language Teaching Anxiety Scale), and analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings were as follows: pre-service English teachers experience in learning and teaching foreign language; their foreign language teaching anxiety is higher than their foreign language classroom anxiety; their foreign language classroom anxiety and foreign language teaching anxiety correlate with each other, but none of them correlate with English proficiency. The necessity of further research regarding nonnative teachers` foreign language learning and teaching anxiety is mentioned in the conclusion. (Cheongju National University of Education)

The purpose of this paper is to show that grammar is not semantically arbitrary but grammatical distinctions are motivated by semantic distinctions. This view has been put forward by Bolinger(1977), Wierzbicka(1988) and cognitive semanticists. Langacker(1987: 12), one of the leading cognitive grammarians, writes that "grammar is simply the structuring and symbolization of semantic content." Put differently, different grammatical constructions encodes different meanings. To show the non-arbitrariness of grammar, some grammatical constructions-English complementation, passives, dative construction, there-construction, have a VN construction-are dealt with in this paper. It is also shown that there is an iconic relationship between the physical form of grammatical structures and the meanings which these structures encode. (Changwon National University)

The purpose of this study was to analyze how elementary school teachers perceive and use EBS English (EBSe) programs. The results revealed that many teachers were not aware of EBSe programs, despite the fact that the service has been on the air for two years. However, it was perceived as useful especially for expanding the opportunity to provide the students with English input. In practice, the use of EBSe programs was low and limited though it was relatively more actively used in regular English instructions than in other school activities. The difficulty of utilizing EBSe in elementary school was primarily attributable to the limited instructional hours for English and the lack of knowledge in connecting the program with the current English curriculum. Therefore, it was suggested that teacher training would be necessary to introduce efficient ways of utilizing EBSe within the current school curriculum. (Daegu National University of Education)

Most of the people seem to have common matters in relation to the good and the evil. They think for themselves only and do what would be beneficiary to them only. However, they do not know that they also have the character of the evil. Whenever we face a matter of life, we would have lots of struggles between the good and the evil. Another important point is that we have the tendency to make the conclusion that would be beneficiary to us. Madeleine L`Engle emphasized that all the people must achieve better situation. If a person wants to get a good one, the good one is given at the end and, prior to the good one, God gives the ability to choose the good one. Meanwhile, it seems that, when we are in the difficult situation, we seem to exactly select the good part in conclusion. In "A Wrinkle in Time," we can find that Meg, Calvin, and Charles are normal children. As they have normal character, they intend to get better ones and the win of God. We`ll understand the meaning of self-establishment through the struggles between the good and the evil and the good ones will always be chosen through the faith, trust, and love. (Hannam University)

The purpose of this paper is to examine the viability of employing the intonation cloning technique in teaching English prosody. Ten native speakers of Korean participated in the prosody self-study experiment. All of them were similar in their level of English proficiency. They were grouped into two groups: the target group and the control group. For the study material of the target group, the English native speaker`s F0 contours were transferred to matching utterances of the target group. No manipulation was done to the study material for the control group. The recordings both before and after the experiment showed that the target group performed better than the control group. Specifically, the target group displayed patterns similar to those of the English native speaker in terms of the location of the highest F0 points and the range of F0 values between the lowest and the highest points in the utterances. The recording after the experiment was also subjectively evaluated by a native speaker of English. As expected, the target group scored higher than the control group. All these results suggest that it is viable to teach English intonation by using learner`s utterances with cloned native intonation. (Yeungnam University, Kyung Hee University)

Poetry therapy is the interactive `process` of the literature, the facilitator(poetry therapist), and the client. Self-understanding and insight is one of the most important goals of poetry-therapy. Literature works as a catalyst in the therapeutic process toward a new sense of self or self-awareness and the whole process resembles the journey-quest motif of literature. The journey which Campbell calls the monomyth is the basic structure on which the whole of western-literature is founded. As an example of the therapeutic literature, this paper will discuss The Lion King(Allers and Minkoff, 1994), which is the ingenious mixture of themes found in classic literature like Hamlet, the Old Testament and mythology. The main discussion of this paper is focused on Simba`s (therapeutic) journey as a qualifying test to become the King of Pride Land. Audience/students may also go through the poetry-therapeutic experience by being challenged to ask `who am I?` and to face their own `past`(failure, painful memories, traumatic experiences, etc.). Students can be evoked to find the "King" inside themselves and restore their own self-esteem.. (Korea Nazarene University)

The purpose of the presented survey is to find out the factors of teaching stresses and teaching satisfaction from native English teachers. As there is a growing need for increasing English communication competence, in these days, English education managed by inviting native English teachers becomes popular and spreads broadly. In this situation, it is important to figure out how to increase efficiency of English education conducted by native English teachers. Therefore, as one of the methods to improve efficiency of the English education inviting Native English teachers, this study focused on teaching stress and satisfaction by taking a survey toward 101 native English teachers who were gathered from online and offline communities. As the results, native English teachers who participated in the survey felt least stress(2.22) and average satisfaction(3.39). Comparing teaching stress and satisfaction between two groups divided by their background information, the higher teaching experience group felt less stress and the longer residence group felt more teaching satisfaction significantly. Based on opinions from open-ended questions asking problems which native English teachers face with in there teaching, the participants have several difficulties such as office hour, information notice, contract, sick leave, unstable rehiring, excessive regulation, and communication with Korean teachers. One of the main themes of Ian McEwan`s Enduring Love is the problem of pathological love, focused on the conflicts of science and religion in the contemporary world. The differing attitudes toward human nature and love put the protagonist into the crisis of mid-life identity and marriage. Reading this novel requires the readers to find an alternative to the controversial ways of both the rational and religious understanding of the nature of love. Ian McEwan has commented that the protagonist needed something in Clarissa`s view of things. That may be defined as her sensitive, caring world view which comes from her study of Keats` letters about being in love. The aggregative content of objective knowledge represented by the protagonist is contrasted with the lived oneness of knowing and being which is represented by Clarissa. Clarissa`s receptive intuition is evident in her acceptance of love enduring all the agonies of marriage which can be described as the result of her receiving Keat`s "ability to be without any irritable reaching after fact & reason". This is a virtue of emptiness with which man can accept the irrational reality. (Hoseo University)
