It is said that Ralph Ellison is the writer who seeks for artistic universality through his works more than any other African-American writer. Until Ellison, African-American writers` works tended to be devalued for a lot of reasons. For instance, their works were seen as simple outbursts of their persecution, distortion and repression in the reality of life. The critics sharply pinpointed the lack of artistry in their works. It was the very Ralph Ellison who caused a huge turning point for the evaluation of African-American writers, in that the writers were finally and appropriately seen as real literary men. The speaker in Ellison`s novel, Invisible Man, has constant trials and errors until he can build up his own identity in the invisible world of reality. In this work, the protagonist`s confrontation to invisibility in reality is developed by experiencing the blues tradition and spirit. The blues leads him to overcome his negative and limited reality. Ellison emphasizes that folk traditions, especially the blues, are art forms which help African-Americans survive and keep their courage and vision. Through the power of their traditions, they can transcend the agony of life by squeezing tragicomic lyricism from painful experiences. In the end, Ellison insists that self-discovery is the way to recover the human possibility refused by others, and that the firm recognition of freedom comes from affirming oneself as a human existence in reality. This paper is to argue that two complaints by anti-accommodation are mistaken and that the concept of presupposition accommodation is still needed. One of two complaints is involved with the problem of informative presuppositions. The problem is that while presuppositions are supposed to be conditions on the update of contexts, the update can go through perfectly well though the condition is not satisfied. The other complaint is that the process of accommodation involves mysterious magic. Concerning solving the problem of informative presuppositions, a time dependent account by von Fintel is used to defend common ground theory and accommodation theory. The account extends the range of common ground through before the update can be performed.(Hoseo University)

This paper aims to examine Dickens`s later novels from the perspective of ecocriticism. Especially it delves into the ways Dickens treats water and other environmental elements related to water, such as river, mud, fog, and so on. Victorian England experiences unprecedented environmental problems as well as brilliant success in industrialism. Because of the water pollution, the Parliament had to close up, and people could not drink the tap water at all. The water pollution eventually led to epidemics. As is well known, Dickens`s later novels critically deal with a lot of social issues. It is noteworthy that in doing so Dickens uses polluted rivers, stinky fog and filthy mud, which are all related to water, to effectively develop the themes. In a sense, environment acts as a character rather than a background. That there is always clean water, or the sense of its being there, in ideal places in his novels testifies how seriously Dickens takes the problems of water. (Chungnam National University)

The purpose of this study is to develop ubiquitous living English experience learning center by connecting the ubiquitous utilizing learning with the characteristics and benefits of experience learning. For this purpose, the concept and core categories of ubiquitous experience learning was clearly identified focused on critical analysis of various materials through surveys of the relevances of experience learning and ubiquitous utilizing learning. Experience learning using ubiquitous system is mainly centered on maximizing the effect and efficiency of experience learning taking into account the characteristics of ubiquitous- expansive, dynamic, interactive and shared ones. In addition, schemata regarding communal relations and activities through meeting with the outside will help recognize one`s consciousness. Furthermore communications by means of active participation and interaction can motivate and reinforce the internalization of the self-reflection. In this study, PDA-based ubiquitous living English experience learning center has been developed optimally and situationally. Fear and uneasiness characterize recent dystopian novels for young adults. This contradicts general traits of children`s literature, which could be epitomized by "moralistic" and "happily ever after". Does it exemplify transformation of children`s literature which has been the focus of controversy for more than a decade? Tracing the historical change of adventure could give an answer to this question. Mortal Engines, The House of the Scorpion, and The City of Ember describe adventures as a way of building new identity and community, and introduce old and humane values in the process. So far, no noticeable break from the traditional adventure is sensed. But these works belie those values by destroying homes, presenting protagonists as Others, and undermining humans` status as the subject of adventure. Humans are no longer heroes of adventures who overlook, name, categorize and control the world. The status as subjects has been lost to them. This is the core of "newness" in children`s literature and explains these novels` addiction to fear and readers` uneasiness. (Korea National Open University)

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the mythical structure, which follows the structure of Greek`s heroic myth or mono-myth, in Saul Bellow`s Henderson the Rain King. The nuclear structure of myth is "departure→initiation→return". Henderson is alienated from his family and society, even though he desires order and meaningful life but only finds chaos. He is trapped by two inescapable factors of life: death and reality. So, he leaves his wife and goes to Africa just as the heros in myth. Through Africa`s initiation, Henderson recognizes reality and love, and returns to his home, America. Finally he experiences the transformation, which is the important theme of myth, in the mythical structure like Greek`s heroes and finds his own identity. (Jeonju University)

The purpose of the present study was to investigate what kind of mobile devices Korean college students use for their English study. Also, this study researched how students applied the concept of ubiquitous learning(u-learning) to their study as well as to their classroom activities. Since most students had at least one or two mobile devices, the aim was to research u-learning and the use of mobile devices for studying English. A questionnaire, which was designed for college students, was administered to 120 students. Data collected from 105 students were statistically analyzed. The major research findings of this study were summarized as follows: Firstly, the results showed that 45% of all students surveyed had mobile phones and MP3 players. These were the most statistically-significant mobile devices. Secondly, although most students possessed a mobile phone, they were not yet applying it to their English study; however, it was the electronic dictionary that most students were using for their English study. Thirdly, around half of the students who participated in the survey answered that applying the mobile devices to their English study was effective for raising their interest as well as their self-confidence. Fourthly, the kinds of functions the students would like to have with their mobile devices are practical communicative functions in order to practice authentic discourse. The findings of this study suggest a present ubiquitous English learning environment using mobile devices, which could lead to a new learning paradigm. (Chung-Ang University)

For Adrienne Rich, writing a poem is dreaming of the world of possibility, two of whose wheels are change and alliance. For this purpose she has ripped up the conventional use of language, revealed the damages that patriarchal values had made, and envisioned the possibility of the common language. Writing a poem is also, she argues, empowering the powerless who have long been posited to be feminine in the white-male-centered society. Consequently she has created a linguistic space in which their stories of fear, anger and frustration can be heard. Focusing on these two aspects of Rich`s poetics, this paper chronologically follows her books of poems and illuminates the poetic transformation she has made out of her personal life experiences. Where Do Binding Conditions Apply?

As many researchers suggest, there are some asymmetries between Condition A and Conditions B/C. First, Condition A is a positive coreference binding, whereas Conditions B and C are negative noncoreference bindings. Secondly, Condition A exhibits optional reconstruction whether the related movement rule is A-movement or A`-movement, while Conditions B and C exhibit obligatory reconstruction when A`-movement is involved. I argue that these asymmetric properties can be properly described in a derivational approach. However, the Binding Theory in what is called a strong derivational approach, is too strong to account for various binding relations. This is why an alternative Binding Theory is needed. The asymmetry between A-movement and A`-movement in Conditions B and C, is originally related to a theory of Case (cf. (Lebeaux 2009)). I adopt his idea in part, but my derivation for binding is quite different from his. Conditions B and C are not required to apply at every point in the derivation as suggested by Lebeaux, rather they must apply only to some point in the derivation, to which Case is assigned. Based on a derivational approach, I propose an alternative Binding Theory, in which Case position plays a crucial role. (Korea National Open University)

As a Transcendentalist, Ralph Waldo Emerson, secularizing Christ as a type of the poet, assimilated the Christian theology of the Incarnation of the Word into his aesthetics. Trained to become a Unitarian minister, Emerson abandoned his pulpit a few years after he was appointed a minister and turned to philosophy and literature. In so doing, he assimilates the Christian doctrine of the Incarnation, developing his trinitarian poetics, poetics of the identity of Nature (the Bible) as the text, Beauty (God) as the author, and the Poet (Christ) as the reader. This poetics of Emerson aims to defamiliarize the reader`s habitualized angle of vision and leads him into a new being who can see through the surface of things the divine glory of the ordinary and the common and to realize the identity of God as author, Nature as the text, and Man as the reader.
