Recent studies of sentence processing elicit how a human parser comprehends human languages, which is not necessarily in line with results of theoretical studies. One of the most interesting puzzles whose answer seems to be found from processing approaches is understanding gradient nature of sentence acceptability that are related to Island Effects. This paper investigates so-called sluicing constructions from a processing perspective and proposes various acceptability status of sluicing constructions that apparently include islands is due to processing difficulty when the comprehender identifies dependency between the remnant and the correlate. Following a view that canonical Island Effects are from processing difficulty, this paper argues that Island Effects on elided wh-interrogatives can be graded depending on the amount of information that the antecedent of the remnant such as the sluice in sluicing carries.

This paper investigates the meanings of allegory and symbols of dreams in Coetzee`s Waiting for the Barbarians. Dante Alighieri who is considered the first allegory theorist insisted that allegory is "a truth hidden under the beautiful fiction." This concept of allegory matches the narrator, Magistrate`s statement, "I was the lie that Empire tells itself when times are easy, he the truth that Empire tells when harsh winds blow." Therefore it would be possible to insist that Coetzee tried to reveal the truth hidden under the imperialism, using allegory. Waiting for the Barbarians consists of 6 chapters in which Magistrate dreams many dreams with crucial metaphors such as: a red flag, a snowcastle, a body, a swarm of bees, and a desert. In fact, if we focus on the consciousness of Magistrate, these chapters are organically linked through the dreams which are an unconscious narrative of Magistrate. Finally, this unconscious narrative of dreams is related to the endeavor of Magistrate who wants to gain the identity of selfhood.

This paper studies the common structure of both Verb Phrase Fronting and Verb Phrase Ellipsis in Korean and English. These two linguistic phenomena have been researched separately, despite having two common properties for their derivations: Explicitness condition and Finite T. Throughout this paper, we show that Verb Phrase Fronting and Verb Phrase Ellipsis can be analyzed uniformly, with Park(1996)`s Outer Spec-Head Agreement in TP and vP.

In general, Death of a Salesman is an indictment of the American capitalist system which values machines more highly than men. However, the protagonist, Willy, is not being efficiently sacrificed to business efficiency but has failed as a common man who has a false way of life compared to Charley`s. Charley, who is successful, is the exact antithesis of businessman Willy himself. The central conflict is the father-son conflict, but it is the presentation of Willy`s internal life which is the most striking feature of this play. There are three categories of culture in this play. First, culture includes physical aspects such as properties, setting, stockings, refrigerator and car etc. Second, culture is connected to behavior and life pattern such as Willy`s ostentatious attitude. Third, culture is interrelated to the thoughts and values of Willy and his family members. These three categories are interconnected in forming the characters` way of life. In conclusion, Willy is a common man who has self-delusions and false values. He has no sense of the right values which will lead him to become a right person.

With the evolutionary shift of ecocritical perspective from deep ecological one to social constructionist one in the recent years, ecocriticism`s treatment of traditional nature writing has also changed from preoccupation to negligence. The position of the social constructionists tends to reject mainstream ecocriticism`s focus on the genres of nature writing, because they doubt that these genres are capable of representing the complex interactions between environmentalism and political choices, socioeconomic structures. Literary environmentalism that is the textual manifestation of a larger cultural practice and of an ensemble of such interactions exposes such complex socio-political elements in the 19th century nature writings, landscape paintings, and landscape photographs. Literary environmentalism reveals not only ``Nature`s Nation`` ideology but also intentional exclusion of Native Americans in the works of John Muir, one of the iconic 19th century nature writers.

This paper is to survey and analyze the aspect and to have a look at the semantic aspect in Middle School English textbook. There are two kinds of aspect, syntactic aspect and semantic aspect. Syntactic aspect contains ‘have+pp’ & ‘be+~ing’. However, semantic aspect contains many kinds of aspectual forms. That is to say, they are ingressive aspect, effective aspect, terminate aspect, habituative aspect, iterative aspect, continuative aspect. Like this, semantic aspect has various aspectual meaning and it is hard to understand and know them clearly. Many students know the tense well but they don`t know aspect. In this paper, many students are understood the aspect, especially syntactic aspect and various semantic aspect. If many students and teachers have the concern of aspect, they will be able to understand aspect clearly. In the beginning, many teachers should teach the difference between tense and aspect clearly. Through various learning of aspect, students will be able to understand and use aspect well.

There has been a lot of research on the focus particle even on the perspective of quantification, truth-conditional value, implicature, etc. This paper attempts to translate the findings in terms of grammaticalization. This paper addresses grammaticalization of even from a lexical adverb meaning ``uniformly, smoothly,`` to a scalar focus particle and modal particle, invoking the mechanisms of grammaticalization such as subjectification, intersubjectification, modality, mirativity, etc. It is argued on the basis of subjectification that even decodes the speaker`s evaluation and belief of the endpoint on a scale. Intersubjectification accounts for the fact that the endpoint on a scale depends on the mutual belief of the speaker and the addressee in the discourse world. Even also designates the attitude of the speaker such as counterexpectation, surprise, unexpected information toward the proposition as a modal particle.

Hemingway`s heroes Robert Jordan, Richard Cantwell, Thomas Hudson were deeply related with defeatism. They are unsuccessful heroes, it seems. In Hemingway` works, the heroes of them have been deepened and widened. The iceberg theory can be regarded as one of the devices that can help readers understand the themes and characteristics of his style. Hemingway could enlarge the domain of novels by taking the principle of the iceberg theory into his style and accomplish the works which possess eternity derived from the implication of the fourth and fifth dimensions. Hemingway` novels can be characterized as stories that cab be transmitted visibly and audibly. Robert Jordan, Richard Cantwell, Thomas Hudson, seem to be Hemingway`s egoism. Their value of life is, it seems, Ernest Hemingway`s.

Walt Whitman spent his whole life to realize the ``Democratic Utopia`` in America. He always tried to show Americans his conviction of ``New World`` based on the ideas of equality that came under the influence of Quakerism and many political thinkers such as Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln etc. In his day, Americans were conflicted and troubled with each other due to their own regional and personal issues and interests. Whitman, not only a journalist but also a poet, described his ambition for the Democratic Utopia that is instinctive and equal regardless of a social stratum, difference, religion, race, sex etc. But his utopian ideal came to a deadlock in reality because of the deep-rooted selfishness of the American politicians and capitalists. With all the frustrations caused by the Civil War, Whitman continuously desired that his poems would help establish the Democratic Utopia in America and all around the world. So his utopian vision leaves a deep impression on the whole world to say nothing of Americans.
