Bidirectional transfer takes place in bilingualism. For this reason, bidirectionality, proposed by Pavlenko(2000) and Pavlenko & Jarvis(2002), should be discussed under the multicompetence framework, under which ``people who know more than one language have a distinct compound state of mind that is not equivalent to two monolingual state``(Cook 1991, 1992). Based on the concepts of bidirectionality, bilingualism and multicompetence, this study reanalyzes the work of Lee(2010) trying to find evidences of pragmatic transfer in refusal strategies and finds out that L2 influence on L1 really happens in a pragmatic aspect. In addition, in biculturalism, this study suggests the reason why native Americans follow the Korean pragmatic rules, not their pragmatic ones when they produce their language.

Through the experiments for relaxing fixation of English word order, the fixed respects have been reviewed and the primary factors have been observed. As a consequence of these tests, significant points have been determined through the study of syntactical differences between the learners` first language and English. First, this paper uses the phase-based approach as a fundamental technique from the viewpoint of biolinguistics(Berwick & Chomsky 2008). Namely, if the human language faculty can be considered to be one of the organs that can be activated, adult EFL learners under the constraint of UG can be with expectations of acquiring English just as English native learners do as similarly through resetting phases. Therefore the issue of relaxing fixation of English word order is discussed by suggesting resetting phases for adult EFL learners.

This paper deals with Chaim Potok`s two novels, The Chosen and I Am the Clay which were published respectively in 1967 and 1992. In the beginning period of his writings Potok usually focuses on the narrow areas of Judaic Society struggling with religious issues such as Holocaust, anti-semitism and Hasidism. However, his experiences in Korea in the mid-1950s just after the Korean War drastically changed his life, viewpoints and writings. If the successful friendship and harmony between Danny and Reuven, the two Jewish boys in The Chosen, represent the imaginative power of Hasidism between deferent denominations (i.e., Hasidism and Modern Orthodox) among the small Jewish society, the Korean orphan Sin Gyu Kim in the another fiction is a model of non-Jewish good-natured man. In these two novels Potok commonly emphasizes that the mysticism and enthusiasm the young protagonists feel in their world are actually the source of joy and meaning against the suffering and evil, just as Hasidism finds its profound energy in the unity with the deity in everything thorough the pious activities denying any nihilism. In this regard, the adolescent protagonists in his novels are the secular version of spiritual leaders in the modern material world who are equivalent to Moses in the Old Testament era,

This paper is to study the negative images of mothers in Dubliners. The images of mothers in several episodes of Dubliners are often ambivalent or contradictory in their portraits. The notion of mother as inhibitor, an instigator of paralysis, proves most ambiguous in the episode "A Mother." Mrs Kearney in the episode is determined in the commercial exploitation of her daughter`s singing. Mrs Mooney, who contrives to arrange her daughter`s match in "The Boarding House", appears selfish and pretentious. Maria of "Clay" represents another ineffective and powerless ``mother,`` or surrogate-mother, with ties to a spiritual mother. In "Eveline", where the spiritual mother exercises control over the living, Eveline fulfills her dead mother`s wishes at the detriment of her own desires. The mothers in "Ivy Day in the Committee Room," "Counterparts," and "The Dead" are also all described as negative images. I claim that the negative images of mothers in Dubliners` episodes have much to do with Joyce`s sense of guilty, exacerbated by his contradictory feelings about his mother.

This paper addresses Smith`s reflections and suggestions on intra-racial conflict and feuding in a multicultural society in America. Twilight is based on the L.A riots which happened in 1992. It was caused by four white policemen`s excessive suppression on the black Rodney King when he was caught for speeding. This incident gave an impetus for the anger and the discontent of the majority of black in American society to explode. Interviewing a variety of people is her pivotal method to search for authentic American characters. As her interview is shown as an inter view, it is to see the inner world of interviewees and shares their mutual opinions. Acting alone, Smith portrays all characters regardless of gender, race and class. Smith`s body is a potential site of transcultural negotiation unlike King``s a voiceless icon of the black body. Smith`s acting is "a constant process of becoming something" and she seeks for a peaceful co-existence. Multicultural societies need to admit the diversity of races or ethnicities. Also, Twilight paradoxically implies a time of liminality, creativity and a possibility for diversity and co-existence rather than one of danger and obscured vision.

This paper focuses on English sentences composed of two or more propositions. Among them we can find a lot of examples that provide valuable information for Korean learners of English about what so-called ``Think in English`` is. As far as English education in Korea is concerned, multi-propositional English sentences can be more effectively explained in terms of discourse level rather than sentence level topic-comment structure. English learners are encouraged to compare multi-propositional English sentences with their Korean versions. They are advised not to find the subject NP, but to find the topic clause, and then to look for the way the Korean comment clause is processed into English. Roughly there found five ways of processing Korean comment clauses into English: prepositional phrase, infinitive phrase, participial phrase, clause, and adverb phrase. After a significant amount of practice with the comparison, learners will try themselves to translate Korean multi-propositional sentences into English. In the course of these activities, learners will acquire the sense of how to produce natural English sentences more effectively.

This paper is to examine Nickolas Adams` recollection in "Fathers and Sons" written by Ernest Hemingway. He wrote it of his father`s suicide making fictional use, based on his trip to Piggott with Bumby. He uncovered some valuable data on the stream of consciousness by which he refashioned reality into the shape of "Fatheres and Sons," and it shows Nick on one of his return trips to the Indian camp, driving his own son through familiar country and thinking back to the life and the death of the boy`s grandfather. In the early Nick Adams stories Nick is seen as the son of a father; in the latest, he is the father of a son. The story draw circles around the father-son relationship. One great skill of the story is its compression of the generations of men, until the whole clan of grandfather, father, son, and son`s son are seen in a line. Each father is near his son, each son near his father. Accordingly we can know in "Fathers and Sons" that Nicholas` experience of the early shooting with his father and the sexual experience with Trudy are conveyed through Nicholas` recollection and also makes it the concluding story in Hemingway`s collected stories.

This study examines English and Korean listeners` response time to synthesized English /ε/-/æ/ continuum. The statistical results show that English listeners` response times change based on both spectral steps and duration of the vowel whereas Korean listeners` response times change based only on duration of the vowel. These findings support second language speech learning models such as Lado`s Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis, Flege`s Speech Learning Model and Best`s Perceptual Assimilation Model in that identification of L2 vowels is affected by L1 vowels; Korean does not have the low vowel /æ/, thus Korean listeners have difficulty identifying it.

Amsterdam, generally regarded as a novel of social satire, can be reread from the view of modern man`s sense of non-existence and the artist`s desperate effort to integrate the confused moral decay. The two male friends represent masculinity of a trajectory toward destruction after they had lost her maternal empathy and social understanding. The two friends comes to their tragic ends owing to the lack of attributes of creativity, sensibility which had been provided by Molly while she had been alive. As a result of absence of variation, Clive`s effort to create a musical masterpiece fails and comes to a tragic death. Despite this kind of cynical failure, the musician Clive`s effort to create the sublime melody of art is a visionary achievement.
