The purpose of this paper is to present the argument structure of the sentence in which manner adverbs modify state verbs. Manner adverbs are described as predicates of event argument when they modify event verbs. There is a semantic constraint that manner adverbs should modify event verbs. But the problem is that manner adverbs can sometimes modify state verbs. What is important is that manner adverbs means degree of state verbs when they modify state verbs. Therefore they can not be predicates of event argument. In this paper the manner adverb in a stative sentence has been presented as a predicate of the peripheral degree argument. (Mokwon University)

중등 영어회화 전문강사 연수 개선방향에 대한 논의

English conversation lecturers have been deployed in Korean Middle and High schools since 2009. In particular this study explored who English conversation lecturers are and what they think needy about the training program. The interview data from the first 5 trainees were discussed and analysed. The questionnaire data from the second 92 trainees were collected and analyzed quantitatively. The analysis of the data indicates that although most trainees who participated in the training programs followed up the process of the program, they wanted some teaching practice during the training period before going into school and some guarantee for their status. To accomplish the goals of the training program, more practical and organized curricula have to be planned in order to help the trainees in their later teaching. (Daejeon Maebong Middle School)

This paper explores how male homosocial bonding in Charlotte Bronte`s The Professor influences women`s subjectivity. The study of male bonding in this novel is supported by the discussion of Eve Kosovsky Sedgwick`s theory of "male homosocial desire." Sedgwick takes some ideas from Rene Girard`s theory that desire is triangular as opposed to linear: two males are rivals for a female. Furthermore, Sedgwick argues that male rivalry and jealousy include homosexual desires. She sees male homosocial bonding as the site which represses homoerotic feeling and homosexual desire. Sedgwick also criticizes Girard`s idea which regards the erotic triangle as symmetrical regardless of the structure of gender differences. William and Hunsden in The Professor hide and repress their unacceptable homosexual feelings in the heterosexual structure, and in this erotic triangle, Frances or Zoraide are used "as exchangeable property for the purpose of cementing the bonds of men with men." Women in this novel function to legitimize the socially unacceptable form of male bonding and to open the debate regarding how homosocial men feel towards one another. (Hanbat National University)

스키마를 활용한 효율적인 영어 듣기 지도

This study aims to investigate the effective English listening teaching through schema activation in high school. For this purpose we revised the definition of schema, that is, general schema which includes formal(content) schema and functional schema which includes utterance speed, prosodic elements, collocation in addition to formal schema. A control group and an experimental group were selected in a high school. After 10 week classes, it revealed that the experimental group showed a significant increase in the academic achievement as well as in the affective domains. Based on the results of this study, we recommend that a new textbook which activates functional schema should be made and this approach should be applied to their English classes positively by high school teachers. Jonathan Swift`s A Tale of a Tub offers particular difficulties for persona theorists because of the shifting perspectives of its narrator. This paper examines the two mainstream branches of interpreting Swift`s persona which have developed in the early twentieth century and are still exerting a heavy influence on Swift scholarship in general. Mimetic theory, which is somewhat equivalent to what James Clifford called ``hard school`` interpretation, is basically relied on the Swift as a historical figure, while textual criticism, which is related to Clifford`s ``soft school`` interpretation, claims that the narrative voice should be separated from the real Swift himself. This paper contends that an eclectic theory of these two trends may provide a more flexible perspective because seventeenth and eighteenth century when Swift was born and developed his career as a writer of satire can be considered to be a unique historical moment that requires such an interpretation. Decolonizing the language was one of the main concerns of the newly liberated countries in the postcolonial age. To establish their new identities, they even developed new englishes, which were altered from the standard English to suit local surroundings. However, globalization, which directly followed the decolonization movement, made the decolonizing process in peril. English, once the language of the imperial rule, became the language of the global communication. In the age of globalization ELT needs to focus once more on the local concerns. Critical ELT pedagogies, which argue that the new ELT paradigm must combine global outlook with local conditions, would help students develop cross-cultural awareness. It is about time that ELT in South Korea must take these new pedagogical approaches into account and develop ``glocalized`` pedagogies, which bring a socioculturally situated perspective to the current ELT pedagogies. In Catherine Barkley, the fascinating woman, I hope to restore the portrait of this complex and underestimated heroine. It is startling to any reader who sees Catherine Barkley as the model of self-awareness, stoicism, and courage in the novel that her exemplary strength of character has so consistently and so long been ignored. Ozing the issue is that the values Catherine Barkley offers as an alternative to the bloody circus of war and modern existence personal love and fulfillment within the private, rather than the public sphere, intersect with our most stereotypical notions about what are merely female concerns. A World War II perspective, in which public concerns are assumed to rightly supersede the private and personal, has influenced our perception of Hemingway`s World War I novel and its heroine for decades. It is interesting that the most recent readings of Catherine Barkley-readings sympathetic to her, appreciative of her strength and courage, and approving of her attempt to make a "separate peace"-seem to be most closely aligned with responses of Hemingway`s contemporaries of 1929. Under the layers of varnish, Catherine Barkley`s outline has been blurred, at times nearly obscured. (Chosun University)

토익 독해 수업에서 문법 강조와 어휘 강조의 효과

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of TOEIC reading classes, which focus on grammar and vocabulary. This study compared two groups, one group that focused on grammar and the other group that focused on vocabulary in TOEIC reading classes. For the study, the research was implemented for 13 weeks with ninety-seven Korean university EFL students, out of whom forty-eight took TOEIC reading classes that focused on grammar and forty-nine took TOEIC reading classes that focused on vocabulary. Results of the study showed that both groups improved TOEIC reading comprehension. However, students in classes that focused on grammar showed even more improvement. This suggests that reading classes that focus on grammar are more effective than those that focus on vocabulary. Students` responses toward the class revealed that students who were in classes that focused on grammar more actively participated in their learning and studied more by themselves. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of students` overall learning motivation. Consequently, a reading class that focuses on grammar is a more effective teaching method than the one that focuses on vocabulary in terms of improving students` TOEIC reading comprehension. 영어수업능력 향상을 위한 사이버형 영어교사 심화연수 효과 연구

The Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has been carrying out IIETTP(Intensive In-service English Teacher Training Program) for English teachers so that TEE(Teaching English in English) policy can be applied to English classes. This study tried to find out if a Cyber IIETTP is constructed to enhance practical teaching skills and if it actually helps out the trainees in such areas. This study examined 78 trainees that participated in a Cyber IIETTP in 2010 by analyzing their learning behaviors, post-training survey results, and the curriculums. It found out that the middle school teachers put more study hours than the elementary ones, and that those in their 40s to 50s studied more than those in their 20s to 30s while all of them preferred speaking classes. This indicated that a Cyber IIETTP can be highly beneficial in their 40s to 50s who are in need of such program but the circumstances do not allow them to participate in any off-line programs. A close examination of the curriculum for some Cyber institutes revealed that it is only concerned with communicative skills and requires some improvements in the future. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of comprehension-monitoring reading strategies training by think-aloud technique on students` reading proficiency and metacognitive level. The research method is practicing comprehension-monitoring reading strategies training for 20 times. The participants were 1st grade students in a girls` high school. Several meaningful findings were obtained as follows: First, comprehension-monitoring reading strategies training improved students` general metacognitive level except conditional knowledge in metacognition subcategories. Second, comprehension-monitoring reading strategies training improved students` reading proficiency in inference and arranging the order in reading subcategories. Therefore, this research suggests that using comprehensi2won-monitoring reading strategies training makes students recognize their reading comprehension process. (The Kongju National University)
