This research surveyed the perceptions of English education experts, teachers, students, and parents to the increase in the number of listening items of the level-differentiated English tests in the 2014 CSAT system. Survey participants included 88 experts, 161 teachers, 515 students, and 419 parents. The survey asked their preference among the following four options: the number of listening items, 28 (option 1), 25 (option 2), 23 (option 3), 20 (option 4). The results showed that all four groups put their preference on option 2. Also, the survey asked their opinions on the educational and social effects of having more listening items in the English tests. The results revealed that more than 50% of the participants equally chose positive effects (such as the improvement in students` English proficiency, and the activation of practical English teaching) and negative effects (such as posing further burden on the teachers and the students). These results invited us to provide some policy suggestions for maximizing the positive effects and minimizing the negative effects of the survey. (Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation)

Charles Dickens is a social critic of the Victorian England, and his social criticism is mostly based on his belief that one`s living conditions can determine his or her moral status. It is well known that his novels clearly show his strong interest in such environmental issues as housing, sanitation, water pollution, urbanizing development, and so on. Dickens believes that although science may destroy nature and humans` living conditions, it also has a power of restoring living environment to its ideal state. Nature, he also understands, has a meaning when there are people living harmoniously with it. And that is why he is so concerned with people and their living conditions. American Notes, his travelogue to America to which not many critics have paid attention in this regard, also reveals his concern with environmental problems. This paper demonstrates how seriously Dickens criticizes sanitary problems in American cities and the reckless, incomplete development performed in inland frontiers. (Chungnam National University)

As a Newbery winner who writes historical fictions, Linda Sue Park turns her attention to different time periods in Korean history. Unfortunately, she has been sometimes criticized for distorting Korean history and culture due to her incorrect knowledge about Korea. Some critics suggest that she, as a serious writer who writes historical novels of Korea, should be more deliberate in dealing with Korean history. However, her historical novels provide various cultural experiences for readers and give them an opportunity of understanding other cultural people. Furthermore, she always tries to investigate the universal feelings and emotions of human beings in the works. It may, therefore, be appropriate to regard her as a Korean-American writer who writes historical novels, not as a Korean writer who writes about Korean history. (PaiChai University)

The present study examined nine Korean elementary students` English learning experiences in private education sector. By examining Korean students` learning experiences while they were taking English classes at private institutes, the study aimed to explore the characteristics of these experiences and the students` perceptions of learning experiences at English private institutes. In-depth interviewing was the primary means of collecting data for the study. The analysis of data for this study began with organizing a description of each case, then, themes were constructed to generalize the students` learning experiences. The study found that the students started their English learning at private institutes earlier than other school subjects, and the types of education they had received also varied. The students perceived their English experiences at private institutions in a unique way, leading them to divide it into learning for grades at school and learning for English ability at private English institutes. It was certain that English learning in shadow education sector plays an important role in elementary students` English learning and arises inequality in learning English among elementary students. This study aims to examine Dickinson`s perception of death as suggested by her poetry. In her poems, the consciousness of death moves in two directions: toward a perception of the death of a mortal being, and simultaneously toward a poetic vision going beyond a conventional concept of death. Her consciousness eliminated the conventional notion of death as the end of life. To transcend the conventional notion of death is to gain a perception that death is not the end of life, but the acquisition of immortality. It is important to note that closely related to her death poetry are her poems on the subject of immortality. Death is indivisible with time in eternity as well as immortality. The poems in regard with time and death contain Dickinson`s deep concern of enlarging human conditions both in reality and in consciousness. To appreciate the relationship of time-death- eternity is the first step into her world. However, she finally doubts and denies the reality of immortality through death. Rather, she finds the ultimate fulfillment and a sincere and abiding faith in the immortality of nature, love and aesthetic beauty. So she chooses her own way in her poetry where she can have immortality. For her, poetry is perpetual and immortal life. She wonderfully gives a voice to her perception of death, as well as her poetic quest of immortality in her poetry. (Korea Nazarene University)

This article aims to illuminate Carrie Meeber as a blue dreamer in Theodore Dreiser`s Sister Carrie. Theodore Dreiser is a naturalist-writer. Naturalism in America was a reaction against realism, which typified the Genteel Tradition. The naturalist theory is this: men are conditioned and dominated by environment, instinct, or chance. So, it is hard for man to succeed, for he is doomed to destroy in spite of his effort. It can be said that the reason why men cause destruction is that individuals are products of their environment. Dreiser accepted complete determinism. Accordingly, American naturalism bursts into blossom from Dreiser`s appearance. Throughout his career, Dreiser believed that life is necessarily a tragedy, and his novels describe his tragic sense of life. So in his first novel, Sister Carrie, he portrays his vision of the naturalism. Carrie Meeber, the heroine, is described as a victim of desire for success and security, and as a helpless victim of environment. She lives life according to instinct, seeking her desire unlike any other heroine of the traditional American novels. Finally, she succeeds in fulfilling her desire, but she is not satisfied with it at all. Sitting in the rocking chair at the end of this novel, Carrie symbolizes her melancholic state of mind. It shows that she is the blue dreamer in her rocking chair. (Jeonju University)

The purpose of this paper is to reveal John Donne`s paradoxical and reversal strategy in his early love poems. Donne`s readers were mainly the witty and sophisticated readers, Inns gentlemen. He shared with the coterie readers to whose capacities for dramatic involvement he appealed. He created a new style of the lyric poems. The best way to send his concealed concern was to express it not directly and honestly but reversely and paradoxically. Most of the poems he wrote while studying at Lincoln`s Inn are cynical and epigrammatic toward woman`s infidelity and inconsistency. The epigrammatic is fused with other elements, depending on the rhetorical and paradoxical coordinates of the lyrics. The witty poets and the witty readers were supposed to be capable of sustaining both an imaginative involvement in and a critical attitude toward poems―that is, to write and read both poetically and paradoxically. The reversal elements of his poems gave him the reputation of being a supremely witty writer. Whether libertine or courtly, argumentative or dramatic, Donne` lyrics characteristically blend their forms and modes to create the kinds of poems he and his readers liked. The syntactic category of English clausal gerunds has been variously considered as IP, TP, or CP . In the paper, a new analysis of English clausal gerunds as a CP is suggested based on two previous assumptions-(i) Radford(2009)`s CP analysis of non-finite clauses and (ii) Kim(2007)`s extended C-to-T feature-inheritance assumption and T-split assumption, and an additional assumption-(iii) a covert complementizer in clausal gerunds(Acc-ing and PRO-ing). From a minimalist point of view, by the comparison with Pires(2001, 2006)`s analyses that the clausal gerund is a TP or a TP-defective in some cases, it has been proposed that the syntactic category of English clausal gerunds(Acc-ing and PRO-ing) is a CP with a covert complementizer. The new analysis of clausal gerunds can make it possible to analyze syntactic phenomenon (especially on categories) not only of finite clauses but also of non-finite clauses such as infinitives and gerunds universally and economically, without turning to any additional functional categories or special concepts such as case transmission, percolation, or government.
