Aldo Leopold`s ecological ethics shares its philosophical method with John Dewey`s environmental pragmatism. As Deweyan inquiry into the ``problematic situation`` starts with a physiological examination and extends to sociocultural elements, so does Leopold`s ecological inquiry. Leopold conducts a painful inquiry about ecological phenomena, and the result of the inquiry is primarily reflected in forming his ecological ethics. And then, his scientific information and ecological realization is so extensively articulated with the cultural tradition, institutions and customs as well as individual needs and interests that his ecological ethics simultaneously resists eco-centrism and anthropocentrism. Likewise, Dewey`s environmental pragmatism rejects ecological foundationalism on the one hand and might promote non-anthropocentric ethics on the other. However, there is a delicate estrangement between Leopold`s eco-ethics and Deweyan environmentalism; the one, at least, partly extrapolates the intrinsic value of nature to reason ecological ethics whereas the other rejects no matter what reasoning rooted in a priori existence. Leopold often mystifies and absolutizes the value of nature by having recourse to the power of ``the Almighty`` and associating the ecological chain of food with the ``Great chain of being,`` which limits a pragmatist reading of Leopold`s ecological ethics. This paper aims at tracing Thea`s upward trajectory with her participation in the cultural business of constructing a higher life for Chicago through the metaphor of "the cliff dwellers." Conveying the dangers of the cultural business for art commodification, Cather researches for something for which contains the intrinsic values of arts. Ultimately cultural uplift of business men in Chicago can threaten an artist`s spirit and in turn predicate extinction for the artist. But the natural presence of Panther Canyon and the Indian ruins it contains helps Thea reconstitute and reinvigorate herself. Pander Canyon can function as a regenerative, imaginative place to recuperate and escape from the complexity of the modern civilization. Thea` use of the Native ruins for both self-discovery and self-healing allows her to take her place as in individual in modern America. Cather criticizes the contemporary belief that arts and artists are commodities to be bought, sold, and traded. (Daejin University).

Teaching English through English means speaking and using English in the classroom as often as teachers possibly can, for example when organizing teaching activities or chatting to students socially(Willis, 1991). English Immersion Program failed to be performed across the nation for some or other reasons. As its alternative TETE has a great impact on English education in Korea. This paper tried to offer the basis of theory and practice of TETE, exploring Direct Method originated in 19th centuries. Then it found out how to perform TETE. At the early stages, a lot of praise and encourage will be necessary and correction of mistakes should be kept to a minimum lest students should lose confidence and give up. Besides, this article studied the ways TETE must and should be presented or performed in high and middle schools. In the former, pair or group activities should be preferred in the English classrooms for the better communication between teachers and their students. In middle school English classrooms it is said to be desirable that the rate of English use should by degrees be increased from the lower grade to the higher one. Students must know that it does not matter if they make mistakes when they are talking, or if they fail to understand every word that their teachers say. Also they must remember that the main aim of learning a language is to learn to communicate in that language. This paper will be beneficial to English teachers and their students as well as related authorities as a foundation of theory and practice in performing TETE. (Kongju National University).

The acquisition of a new language requires conscious and analytical effort. However, children will learn it from facile imitation of the sounds which native speakers habitually use in speaking. As learning it, children have difficulty learning the pronunciation of the target language due to the difference of the sound system between their native language and target language. Accordingly, this paper aims to study on the teaching pronunciation of English vowels in Korean elementary school, particularly relating with mid central vowel /Λ/ and low back vowel /□/. To understand and acquire the phonetic differences between these two phonemes, Korean children should listen to the two phonemes repeatedly from the voice of native speakers and pronounce the phonemes /Λ/ and /□/ accurately in a word or a sentence, which results in ease of communication between speakers who use different languages as a native language. This research will suggest several teaching methods of the pronunciation of English vowels, /Λ/ and /□/, which drive a high impact on classroom instruction. (Mokwon University).

Robbie McCauley pointed out that slavery and rape are fundamental traumas that occur in an African-American woman`s life. Sally`s Rape reconstructs ``unspeakable`` events such as rape and an auction which were done to the African-American woman slave in slavery. Great-great Grandma Sally`s painful experiences are manifested in Robbie`s dream. Sexual violence committed toward a black slave by a white master is an unforgettable cultural memory and a historical pain which are inscribed in her body. Interracial rape is an ideological site producing differences by sex, race, and class. Dialogue between two characters (Robbie and Jeannie) and with the audience is a principal tool for communion. While the two women explore differences between their races, their roles are often reversed. This work is about Sally`s understanding rather than Sally`s rape itself. McCauley suggests the possibility that an African-American slave woman like Sally had strived to survive and love her life in her own way, though she experienced unbearable pain in her inevitable fate. As opposed to the discontinuity hypothesis by Jakobson (1941/1968) and others, the continuity hypothesis proposed by Vihman and others implies the tacit belief that the so-called ``silent period`` may not exist in the transition from babbling to speech. For those in support of the continuity hypothesis, the silent period that may occur between the two stages of an infant`s phonological development seems to be incompatible with their observation that they are characterized as a continuum that has in common the phonetic structure of word and non-word utterances, which is statistically well analyzed by Vihman et al. (1985). This paper, however, deals with the existence of a silent period within the framework of a continuum. Much of our discussion in this paper is to explore what is happening in an infant`s brain during the same period, looking for any possibility that an infant`s phonological development may be based on what is examined from a neurobiological perspective. Following Sachs` (1988) principle of epigenetic selection, it is assumed that the involvement of both Wernicke`s area and Broca`s area in the human brain can be responsible for the active process of pruning synapses for babbling, resulting in a possible state of a silent period. As the interaction of students with native English teachers increases, the psychological relationship between students and their native English teachers is in play for English teaching and learning. This study explores secondary school students` perceptions on native English teacher`s effectiveness, familiarity and what`s desired of native English teachers. The study surveyed 150 middle school students, 85 high school students and the total of 235 secondary school students. The findings are as follows: 1) Rural area students have more participation rate than urban aread students, and students in arts stream participated more in ratio than foreign language high school students. 2) While students want more attention from native English teachers, native English teachers did not meet up with the level of attention students desire. In fact, the teachers` interests in students are marked fairly low. 3) Students did not take native English teacher`s classes seriously. Instead they want the classes to be fun and not being calculated into their grades. In conclusion, as number of native English teachers decreases, one of the selectional criteria in extending the contracts should include the attention and caring attitudes of native English teachers toward their students besides the teaching skills. The female body is objectified through the male dominated gaze which shares the common characteristics of violence with that of pornography. The gaze in pornography generates the perspective that allows people to gaze women as the highly sexualized objects. Pornographic gaze categorizes women into binary opposition-mother and prostitute. It naturalizes the idea that the role of the mother is for reproduction and mothering and the role of the prostitute is for being available for sexual use. Once women enter the symbolic order, they should observe the law of Father so they can not speak of their own desire and should oppress the drive to go beyond the selfhood. As a result, they superficially seem to have an integrated stable self but women are silenced due to not having their own language and accept the sexualized self on the male gaze. Thus, woman should construct the resistant subjectivity exercising ecriture feminine. Ecriture feminine means the inscription of female body and it is a way to speak forbidden female desire through body. To make personal political, women need the empathy from each other bysharing common experiences and this practice of conscious-raising evolves into sisterhood, (Chungnam National University).

The purpose of this study was to examine if the English proficiency of students improved when grammar class and writing class were connected. For this study the students took a grammar test four times, they wrote short composition on the given topic 8 times and they submit a self reflection report on their satisfaction with grammar class, on the improvement of their English proficiency and on how much the exact grammar knowledge helped to write composition. qualitative research program NVivo 9 was used to analyze these reports. The results show that the students had difficulties using several grammar categories such as present perfect, present perfect continuous, present perfect passive, continuous passive form and tense. Errors such as articles, plural noun, subject-verb agreement and tense were frequent in the students` compositions. In their self-reflection reports the knowledge of English grammar led them to write grammatically correct sentences and finish their writings early and to have competence that they can convey their ideas correctly at English writing. In sum, the effectiveness of English grammar education can be maximized when grammar class is connected with other English speaking or writing class and when context that students can use the grammar they have learned is provided. This paper aims to examine syntactic characteristics of English possessive gerund in Present-Day English from the diachronic point of view. In Old English and Early Middle English, English gerunds were used only for abstract nouns expressing actions. From Late ME and Early Modern English so-called mixed gerunds, such as determiner(the, his, etc) + gerund(-ing) + object structures, occurred. it is argued that his in his + gerund + object differs in function from that of a nominal gerund such as his + gerund + of-object. Based on Fanego (2004)`s claim, it is assumed that his in his + gerund + object might have functioned temporarily as a complementizer or a subordinator like the in the + gerund + object structure. The data shows that the frequency of the mixed gerunds has gradually decreased, which means that in Present-Day English gerunds are used splitting into two independent categories-nominal gerunds and verbal(clausal) gerunds. It is assumed that his + gerund + object structures have been replaced by him + gerund + object structures which began to appear from the late ME, and eventually will be lost in English due to the definiteness between categories. It can be said that possessive gerunds in English are still being verbalized toward clausal gerunds such as PRO/Him gerunds. (Chungnam National University).
