The primary aim of this paper was to investigate the relationship between videoconference teaching with native teacher and elementary school students` language skills (listening, writing, reading, speaking), and to analyze the relative effects of the former variable with vocabulary abilities. In addition, the students` affective questionnaires were examined. The research subjects consisted of 132 students sampled from D elementary schools. This study was conducted with the analysis of a pre-test and a post-test. In order to investigate the overall results of the tests and questionnaires, this study calculated means and standard deviations in the independent sample t-test using statistical methods made by SPSSWIN Ver.18.0. The major findings of this research were: (a) video-conference teaching with native teacher was found to be a good method for improving listening and reading among four language skills; (b) video-conference teaching with native teacher had a positive influence on students` English vocabulary ability; (c) In terms of affective domains, video-conference teaching with native teacher had some affirmative effects. It is natural that picturebooks as cultural artefact contain very much a cultural and historical phenomenon. Therefore, the vast majority of picturebooks published today show postmodern traits. In this study, I tried to use one of the most famous postmodern picturebooks, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales and to investigate what sorts of postmodern devices are used and how they work in this picturebook. This picturebook is considered subverting textual authority through playing with intertextual and metafictive nature of the book therefore pushes the picturebook limits. In doing so, it provides young audience with many other channels to understand the imaginative world that the author tries to deliver. This also gives them different perspectives to look at the world. (Hannam University).

The eleven stories in Annie Proulx`s short fiction collection Close Range: Wyoming Stories differ in their contents but share a connection with ranch life in the state of Wyoming. Characters working in close quarters at a ranch typically operate under the insular social mores of a culture bound by fixed conventions and traditions. These mores and dicta inspire the characters to seek outlets for escape while also convincing them to adhere to dominant, often prejudiced conventions. Proulx shows the reader various modes of life, nearly all of which are influenced by straitened social norms of either escape or adherence. In this regard, the criticism and praise that she directs toward their way of life resembles those of pragmatists, who reject a number of inveterate habits, abstractions, fixed principles, and closed systems in favor of new explorations, concreteness, fluidity, and openness. Pragmatists align themselves with postmodernists in their pursuits and rejections, but differ in their emphasis on practice and effects on life. The traits visible in Close Range more closely resemble pragmatism than postmodernism. In this paper, Close Range is explored from a pragmatistic perspective. (Hannam University).

After Teresa being introduced to Shelley on November 29, 1820, her intelligence and the seeming neglect by her parents won his sympathy. Her plight stirred Shelley`s imagination and inspired him to idealize her as "Emily" in Epipsychidion. Emily is a woman idealized beyond her actual nature into a portrait of the antitype for which the beau ideal within the Poet is seeking. His love for Emily is the love of his internal "psychidion" for her central soul. In the three main movements of Epipsychidion Shelley identifies "Emily" as the human incarnation of the Ideal and proposes that his psychidion and that of Emily be joined in a union uninhibited either by social conventions or by the very encumbrances of others. In the envoy, however, the Poet makes clear that the real achievement of his inner being lies in its projection of itself, not in a pseudo-erotic union with a woman`s soul, but in the creation of the poem. Since Shelley had come to realize that seeking in a mortal form something that must remain eternal and union with that Ideal were impossible, he could place all his happiness in his poetry which would praise the Idea. The purpose of this paper is to examine Beloved by Toni Morrison from the viewpoint of post-colonial framework. In the novel, Morrison seeks a way for ex-slaves to regain a free, autonomous self. In so doing, the blacks have to ask themselves, "What do I want to do?" Then their answers would be to recover the status as a human subject the slavery discourse denied. One of the characters, Paul D, with the Emancipation, reclaiming his body, is still in the state of slave of the past, so he needs to liberate himself from the rememory. So, as a catalyst, Beloved enters the narrative and stimulates him to face his repressed past. Thanks to her, making contact with his own rememory, he redescribes his past favoring present life. As a result of it, finding his own desire of making a home with Sethe, he finally achieves the post-colonial self realization. (Chungnam University).

The purpose of this study was to make an in-depth understanding of the effects of cooperative learning on University students. In addition, the present study aimed at examining the effects of cooperative learning in the cognitive, emotional and social dimensions as well as self-directed learning ability. Participants included six English major students in a University. This study employed a qualitative study to uncover the effects of cooperative learning on students. Data were collected over a six month period using interviews, audio-recording, and students` self-reflection report. The findings revealed that cooperative learning has more positive effects in cognitive, emotional, social dimensions and self-directed learning than traditional instruction. In the cognitive dimension, students developed their critical and complex thinking through reconstructing their knowledge. Their feeling of anxiety and isolation lowered as they experienced cooperative learning in a non-threatening and comfortable environment. Students also improved their social skills by interacting one another in order to reach the same goal of the group. (Korea Baptist Theological University).

The purpose of this study is to examine two English pronunciation teaching methods for Korean students. The Korean students were trained by an English professor and a Korean professor. They learned how to pronounce English diphthongs using some English words. The English professor asked them to repeat after him and corrected their pronunciation. The Korean professor provided phonetic explanation of the English diphthongs such as the way to use lips and the tongue, etc. and applied phonological information of Korean vowels while correcting their pronunciation. We recorded their pronunciation both before and after they were trained. The results show that the Korean professor`s training methods are more effective than those used by the English professor. It has been told that Tom Stoppard borrowed plots, dialogues, dramatic actions, characters, and dramatic devices from other writers` works. However, he did not merely imitate them, but creatively reconstituted them, put them into new contexts, and gave them new meanings. In short, creative transformations are Stoppard`s unique theatrical writing style. The purpose of this study is to investigate what he wants to achieve through his writing style, and how his style contributes to develop his view of theatre through various aspects of creative transformations in Stoppard`s Dogg`s Hamlet, Cahoot`s Macbeth. Stoppard explored the content and ideas rather than the forms of the plays, which he had set as his goal in writing his plays. He thought that borrowing from other writers` works was much more economical and effective than originally writing plays on his own. Stoppard used famous classical plays as frameworks of his own plays. Especially, he transformed the works of Shakespeare. He used the Shakespeare`s works not to take advantage of the reputation of the plays, but to attract readers/audiences and to enhance the dramatic effect through the familiarity of the plays. Also, it is highly probable that he borrowed from the classical plays to ensure the authenticity of his works. Stoppard tried to escape from the tradition that playwrights generally tend to write about their own experience in their works. He thought that using other writers` works was the most effective way of expressing theatre`s artificiality and self-reflective aspects. Other writers` works served as a mirror, through which he was able to reconsider his plays. In conclusion, Stoppard`s plays are not merely parasitic imitations or mimicries; they are very meaningful in that other writers` works are transformed and recreated as new type of works. It demonstrates that excellent plays are created not only by using the playwright`s imagination, but also through creative transformations. (Korea University Sejong Campus).

``A Femme Fatale`` means a dangerous evil woman whose destination is to bring a calamity to a man with her sexual attractiveness. In particular, the Femme Fatale images are closely related with the emergence of ``New Woman`` after the middle of 19th century in Europe. Andersen created his own Femme Fatale images: Little Mermaid has an innocent appearance of a young girl and Snow Queen has an elegant grace of a middle age woman. In "The Little Mermaid" (1836) and "The Snow Queen"(1844), the fatal calamities of the heroines are hidden under their innocent appearances or altered into socially acceptable figures. However, "The Ice Maiden"(1861) shows such dramatic changes that expose the naked evil images of satanic women with monstrous calamity like Salome. By reflecting the historical trends of life, Andersen produces his own images of Femme Fatale each differently for these fairy tales, which are designed to reveal the hidden desires of human beings. This article will explore how the protagonist`s emotional journey and his vision of empathy toward the other have been represented in Ian McEwan`s Saturday. McEwan`s view of the fiction emphasizes the significance of the empathy of the human mind in confronting the world full of the unexpected violence such as the 9/11 accident which functions as a psychological background of this novel. This essay considers the way by which the author explores the complexities of the protagonist`s mental processing in which his rational view of life moves toward the emotional state of mind. By showing the emotional view of the poets and the reason of the scientists, the author implies that we must learn to feel to attain an encompassing and imaginative view of the human condition.
