Franklin Hata’s narrative in Chang-rae Lee’s 1999 novel, A Gesture Life, can be read as a process of finding the point of his guilt in his experience with Kkutaeh, who was brought as a sex slave into the Japanese military base in Burma where Hata had been posted as a medical assistant during the Pacific War. Hata’s failure to act on Kkutaeh’s appeal to kill her in mercy is a traumatic event in his life, and the memory provides a deeper understanding of his repeated failures in the relationship with Sunny, his adopted daughter, and his life-long desire for acceptance from his adopted nation and society. In the narrative tracing back his journey of establishing a new identity, Hata’s voice becomes more self-reflective about his anxiety about belonging, and even darker with the desire for self-annihilation. Hata’s narrative reveals that in his struggle for group acceptance, he has avoided facing the crucial point of his responsibility as he has assumed "the role of disinterested spectator" and did not act or make an ethical choice which can lead to the recognition of who he is. He realizes that Kkutaeh’s demand for his action or choice is in fact a call for his ethical response as a singular being. Kierkegaard sees that our sin comes to existence as we see ourselves as a free and singular subject, and that the sensitivity to the inner freedom engenders the sensitivity to sin. The realization is an event in which a subject discovers her or his irreplaceable singularity. In the singularity, one finds that there is no substitution for the choice or act but himself or herself. Therefore responsibility is inherent in guilt and in one’s recognition of himself or herself as a free and thinking subject. In this sense, Hata’s admission that he was in fact “a critical part of events” and that he and others were central in the larger processes of victimizing Kkutaeh is the moment he finds his singularity as a responsible subject. This study aims to define Gertrude’s desire as an indeterminate desire, which acts as a veil. It cannot be explained by any particular criterion, but regards it as an expression of Baudrillard’s concept of Seduction. Baudrillard’s Seduction Theory helps to overcome the irrationality of binary opposition structures that produce only Homogeneity, excluding Others. Gertrude’s indeterminate desire could never be formed to comply with a patriarchal society, which Ghost and Hamlet intended. However, her veiled desire only seductively intrigues and attracts the two men further to stay around her, stimulating them to try to find out what her desire involves. As such, her indeterminate and reversible seduction(desire) allows her to free herself from the two men’s domination as she plays upon and disrupts their patriarchal sexual norms.(Daegu University of Foreign Studies)

What is Man? shows a dramatic shift in Mark Twain’s style and his different depiction of the human race. The Old Man, Twain’s mouthpiece, insists that man is a machine completely controlled by outside influences, heredity and training and manipulated only by the sole impulse to content his peace of mind. The Old Man also condemns human cruelty, stupidity, cowardness, and selfishness and blames the Moral Sense for the source of human evil nature. This paper arrives at a more integrated, comprehensive understanding of Mark Twain’s view of human beings in the work. Mark Twain was a moralist at heart. After experiencing his severe financial troubles and personal tragedies, he began to accept realism, Darwinism, Social Darwinism, and determinism, which can explain immoral social injustice and personal tragedies as unavoidable phenomena. These theories that he upheld so vigorously, however, do not coincide with his belief. Therefore, a different depiction of the human race and his conflict between his conviction and the dominant mood of the later part of the 19th century in What Is Man? reflects Mark Twain’s natural shift from a moral optimist to a man of comprehensive understanding of human beings.(Konyang University)

This paper aims to analyse Henry James’s The Ambassadors in the aspect of man’s marriage and search for his identity. In general, James pursues closely the process of change in characters’ consciousness before and after their marriages, and reveals the problem of their search for identity. While he intensively deals with woman’s marriage and consciousness change in his many novels and stories, James focuses on a middle-aged man’s marriage and identity in The Ambassadors. Strether, the hero of the novel, goes to Paris to take Chad back to America at his mother’s request. But in Paris, Strether is aware of sense of loss about himself and his past in which he couldn’t live as he wanted to in the time of his youth. He thinks that he lost something valuable like passion or love in his younger days. So he advices Chad and his friend Bilham to live as they want to and not to lose precious things in their youth. In the end, after his awakening of his own life and lost past, Strether pursues his identity through renouncing his duty as an ambassador in spite of a greater reward such as marriage with Mrs. Newsome. Thus James shows the process of change of Strether’s consciousness.(Chungnam National University)

As Emmanuel Levinas scholarship is recently getting more and more enlivened, researchers are trying to come up with the possibility of expanding his thoughts into other fields of humanity studies. The relationship between Levinas’s thoughts and postcolonial literary theory has stood out as one of such possibilities. It seems to be apparent that Levinas’s ethics of Other and the discourse of other theorized in postcolonial theory have a certain common ground. Having these ideas in mind, this study is trying to investigate the question whether the two levels of thoughts can have a possibility to go hand in hand and then elucidate the question of the political in Levinas’s writings from the perspective of postcolonial theory. The conclusion of this study is that although Levinas’s ethics of Other has a strong political implication, we should not confuse the two thoughts because they are two different systems of thought which open their theories in the different horizons. Therefore, even an ambitious attempt to find a common theoretical ground from the two terrains of thought may result in mis-stepping the stones.(Catholic University)

The purpose of this paper is to examine fundamental characteristics of Korean middle verbs based on morphological, syntactic, and semantic conditions in English middle verb. Under the premise that there exist middle verbs in Korean, this study critically reviews studies on middle verbs in Korean in recent years. They are realized morphologically either in the same forms as transitive counterparts or in the forms of passives or causatives. Korean middle verb formation has been explained either by NP movement or by lexicon operations. Also, Korean middle verbs not only have similar semantic characteristics as those of English but also idiosyncratic characteristics such as demonstrative modifiers, unspecified verbs, and inseparable possessive relations of NPs.(Inchenon National University)

Of environmental problems and issues, climate change especially has escaped ecocritical attention. Ecocriticism’s negligence is often attributed to uncertainties and complexities with regards to the scales and the cause-effect relationship of climate change, along with econo-political interests among interests groups and nations. However, a closer examination of ecocriticism reveals a new fact that such negligence is already embedded in ecocriticism’s persistent emphasis on individual responsibility and moral reform toward eco-friendly life. Ecocriticism’s call for ethical decisions and practices on the part of each individual unfortunately is not particularly effective, considering that recent studies and surveys have shown that the majority of people does not take consequences of climate change as their own responsibilities. This further indicates that ecocriticism needs to pay attention to a new rhetorical strategy and a relevant literary genre. Instead of directly urging readers to comply with the authors’ ideas and causes, fiction writing does not drag readers to the authors’ environmental causes; instead, through the intimate and personal details of a character’s life, fiction genre indirectly invites readers to think about issues like climate change, the issues that they maybe did not know they needed to know. Flight Behavior, Barbara Kingsolver’s 2012 canonical novel that deals with the biotic consequences of climate change, is a good example to examine such a descriptive and rhetorical strategy.(Kangwon National University)

This study examines how The Vagina Monologues performs a social ritual which creates social changes by establishing new identities. Eve Ensler makes the most private aspects public by speaking loud onto a public stage and renders taboo topics visible and speakable. The collection of monologues, molded with various women’s personal stories about their vaginas, connects women by the vagina and distills multiple voices into one voice on stage. Sharing the stories and experience is the process of reclaiming women’s subjectivity and the personal stories become political beyond the stage, transcending national boundaries. Ensler draws upon strategic essentialism which defines women’s self as a vagina to assert women’s empowerment and reinforce the cohesion of women’s community. The vaginas act as a site in which we examine our gender oppression and find a liberative self. The play deconstructs gender ideology, the unitary phallic world view and demonstrates new directions and possibilities of women’s subjectivity in a ritualized way. The voice of women as a community gives birth to a collective energy and leads the audience to raise their consciousness and participate in their communitas. Communitas, as Victor Turner defines it, is an ideal, cooperative community in liminality. With the creative, subversive potential of liminality, the ritual has the ability to instigate social changes. V-Day, a globally organized social movement reflects the success of the social ritual and illustrates how a play, a work of art is changed into a work of politics.(Yeungnam University)

The purpose of this paper is to investigate connective and anti-connective effects of specificational clefts and to prove that the former are well explained by C-command relations based on their appropriate reconstructions and the latter are in their S-structures. This paper deals with three different types of clefts: it-clefts, wh-clefts, and reverse wh-clefts. These clefts present connective/anti-connective effects in Binding Conditions, Bound Variable Licensing, Negative Polarity Items Licensing, Quantifier Scopes, and Idioms (Dis)continuities. The result of the investigation is presented in table (55). Table (55) shows that connective/ anti-connective effects of it-clefts are similar to those of restrictive relatives. Reverse wh-clefts are the same as topicalizations. However, if the subjects of reverse wh-clefts are foci rather than topics, their connective effects become the same as wh-clefts. Thus, they show asymmetries according to their subject roles, foci or topics. In addition, this paper presents two different kinds of reconstructions. One is non-cleft simple sentence type for it-clefts and the other is doubly indexed variable plus its value expression type for wh-clefts and reverse wh-clefts. Whichever reconstruction type clefts choose, C-Command relations play a key role in explaining their connective effects.(Korea National Open University)

Many students in Korea have difficulty learning English despite 10 years of English classes. The reason for this difficulty has been simply identified as demotivation. Little further research into how demotivation is caused and how it can be prevented has been done. The purpose of this study is to do this research on university students. For this research a primary demotivation factors scale was developed by the present researcher. 225 students participated in this survey and their responses were analyzed through statistics. According to the results, the demotivating scale consists of four factors. The validity and reliability of the demotivating scale was significant statistically.(Mokwon University)
