Gerald Vizenor criticizes ‘terminal creeds’ that are allegedly rooted in both of Native American nationalism and Euro-American colonial attitude. Bearheart’s narrative focuses on why some of ‘the circus pilgrims’ are killed so as to help the readers to identify terminal creeds embedded in their words and behavior. Each story of Bigfoot and Little Big Mouse’s death exemplifies how anyone who is possessed by any abstract creed may commit such a non-sensical or horrible crime, which concerns violence of terminal creeds in general. Vizenor also criticizes Euro-American imperialism or racism by presenting some Euro-American characters who reveal their unconscious hatred against the native people and colonialist desire to assimilate young native kids as exemplified in the story of Bearheart’s childhood. And the double-way cultural criticism in this novel is on the same track with cultural ‘transmotion’ and ‘survivance,’ which is necessitated to promote the betterment of the native people’s real life. The purpose of this paper is to analyze Pericles that represents the united empathy between the old generation, Pericles and new generation, Marina. As Shakespearean pattern in other romances is not about the fall of fathers but about their restoration, Pericles is also revived from his symbolic death. Antiochus, who is the powerful king of Syria, presents Pericles one of the suitors of his daughters the riddle that implies incest between himself and his daughter. After finding meaning of the riddle about Antiochus’ incestuous situation, he fled incessantly and continued making a perilous voyage. Pericles’ oppressed incestuous desire is projected on his confrontation with incestuous relationship of Antiochus and his daughter. Pericles, however, through his painful agony of long journey could overcome the stimulus for repression of the unconscious incest wishes toward his daughter. In other words, his ego masters his Oedipus Complex in his inner inclination psychologically. Marina plays a new symbolical role as an essential archetype of mother. Accordingly, Marina has a role in the figure of anima that she makes Pericles’ incestuous suffering sublimate using a language. Pericles finally expels not only his libido toward Marina but also traumatic effects. As a result of it, Pericles is completely restored from painful self-castration, and unconscious and incestuous desire to his daughter disappears. (Daejeon University)

The purpose of this paper examines the aesthetics of co-existence in Kingston’s The Woman Warrior based on ecofeministic thoughts. Ecofeminism is a compound word that links ecology and feminism, regarding a woman and nature as oppressed objects. The two objects have turned values of possession, conquest, and accumulation into reciprocity, harmony, and mutual interdependence. Mulan lived in perfect harmony with animals, plants and all living things in nature beyond sex. Spiritualized ecofeminsim considers the value of earth, spirituality and female unique physical experiences important. The concepts of ghosts or spirits also pervade throughout this book. Each being has its own value and caring could be an alternative for ecology, ecofeminism and spiritualized ecofeminism. (Namseoul University)

David Mamet is a powerful writer, generally accepted as one of the most important playwrights of his time. Mamet continues to be identified through his distinctive use of language. It not only differentiates his work, but is also a central vehicle for exploring characters, stories and meanings. He believes in the importance and the power of dramatic language, which results in him being considered a ‘dramatic poet.’ Mamet creates reality by filling his works with various linguistic strategies. In the new reality, the characters want to control their opponents through their own language. This study aims to examine the characteristics and roles of dramatic language used by David Mamet. Also, this study investigates the linguistic strategies in The Speed-the-Plow, and analyzes how these strategies affect the behavior of the characters through meticulous analysis of the text. The characters only use language for their cunning purposes. They use strategies such as ‘naming’ and ‘lying’ when the reality is disadvantageous and interferes with achieving their goals, creating a new reality to help their situation. Finally, this study emphasizes that Mamet’s works provide truth through the characters’ fake realities. (Chonbuk National University)

This essay aims to study Michael J. Sandel’s political theory and analyze Lois Lowry’s The Giver from Sandel’s theoretical viewpoint. Sandel thinks that nowadays market and market values have expanded into all spheres of society, which undermined modern morality. He argues that liberalism can’t effectively handle this problem so he emphasizes the role of community. Accordingly, Sandel’s political theory of republicanism claims that community members as encumbered selves feel moral responsibility for their community, which leads them to discuss the issues of the community and seek for the general good. The Giver can be read as an example of republicanism as such. Jonas is selected as the Receiver in the Ceremony of Twelve. Since then, Jonas gets training through which he comes to know that the community deleted the past memory of mankind from its members. He feels agony and moral responsibility for the other community members. Meanwhile, Jonas and the Giver have a lot of discussions as part of the training. This raises Jonas’s ability to think and judge. Finally he makes an important decision for the community, that is, he returns the lost memory back to its members. (Dankook University)

The present study examined the effects of grammatical knowledge (implicit and explicit) on L2 reading performance. A total of 50 students (12 males and 39 females) participated in the study. The participants were asked to take two grammaticality judgment tests (timed and delayed tests) in order to measure their implicit and explicit grammatical knowledge respectively along with a multiple-choice reading test, and respond to a questionnaire. The outcomes were 1) the students’ explicit grammatical knowledge scores were significantly higher than their implicit knowledge scores, which indicates that formal instruction on grammar features plays a crucial role in L2 learners' grammar acquisition, 2) the two types of grammatical knowledge were related to the measure of L2 reading comprehension so that the role of grammar in reading comprehension needs to be revisited, and 3) these results above differed depending upon their English language proficiency, which implies that students’ L2 proficiency level should be taken into account in grammar instruction and L2 reading research. This study purposes to consider Lawrence’s interests and creative energies towards death and rebirth in Last Poems. Lawrence’s serious illness in September 1929 was his deepest descent into his own primordial unconsciousness, where the ultimate distinction is between life and death. Lawrence’s Last Poems coheres as a larger artistic design through a pattern of figurative centrifugality and circularity. These conceptual constructs denote, respectively, an outward movement from a center and an endless movement around a center. Lawrence thought modern men can choose between a mechanic self-centeredness(“circularity”) and an identification or integration with the living forces of the universe(“centrifugality”). Circularity and mechanization are united as a figurative and thematic statement of the entrapment of industrialized man. In addition, the fixed and mechanical movement like a wheel of circularity shows a metaphor of evil. The movement from one’s self-consciousness towards oblivion(whether psychic transformation or physical death) describes a departure from ‘I’ consciousness as a centrifugal activity. The journey in the oblivion poems indicates the centrifugality. (Namseoul University)

The purpose of this thesis is to study the double self in Eugene O'Neill's mask plays: The Great God Brown, where one man plays two roles and Days Without End, where two men play one role. Eugene O'Neill wanted to express visually such confusion, conflict, fusion, and displacement of double self as the psychological struggle between inner self and outer self by changing the mask figure and putting on another mask. The ultimate method overcoming the conflict and struggle of double self is to achieve the freedom and the salvation from the mask, and O'Neill suggests the way of them through Cybel, Earth Mother in The Great God Brown for Dion and Brown, and Elsa, the Virgin Mary in Days Without End for John. This paper focuses on the causes of Elizabeth’s tragic life in Ten Thousand Sorrows through the perspectives of John Bowlby’s object relations theory. Since object relations theory is strongly related to the stage of psychological development of infants and children, it is basically applied to the analysis of Elizabeth’s object relations who was about 6 years old, lost her mother and was taken to the orphanage and eventually was adopted by an American family. John Bowlby mainly articulates his object relations theory using his concepts such as “attachment”, “loss”, and “mourning”. In particular, in the part of mourning, he divides it into four stages ―numbness, yearning and searching, disorganization and despair, reorganization and insists that people experience these four stages when their beloved people die. Elizabeth consistently fails to enter the last stage, reorganization, since she is still trapped in the stage of disorganization and despair. However, the power of successful attachment with her daughter, Leigh, Elizabeth is healed and helped to mourn her dead mother properly. And now she hopes to reorganize her life with her daughter.
