The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of utilizing mobile phones in classrooms to enhance reading comprehension of English language learners and explore the learner’s opinions on mobile phones as learning tools. For this, control and experimental groups are created; the former includes teacher’s explanation, peer discussion, and information from texts and the latter focuses on using mobile phones to conduct information searching, utilizing mobile application, and product uploading to online communities. A pre-test, post-test, and open-ended questionnaire are conducted to determine the differences on efficiency of mobile technology for EFL learners’ reading comprehension and consider learner’s opinion on mobile devices to enhance learning. The results show that the experimental group demonstrates a higher score than the control group does. It means that it is very effective to utilize mobile phones to improve understanding of certain information of English texts. The results of the questionnaire, additionally, are as following 1) the satisfactory points of mobile use are convenience and novelty, interest and fun, and efficiency of learning, 2) the unsatisfactory points are hassle, difficulty in using the device, inefficiency of learning, and inconvenience of the device. The findings of this study can provide pedagogical implications for utilizing mobile phone in EFL classroom for reading comprehension. (Kookmin University)
