This paper deals with Charles Dickens’s two travelogues, American Notes and Pictures from Italy, which have been relatively ignored in criticism. These two travel books have a very important meaning in the context of the discourse of history that was then the key issue in intellectual milieu. Dickens was keenly aware of the social problems that Victorian England faced, and endeavored to improve the social conditions. He traveled to America and Europe during the 1840s. And he wanted to see how well the new improvements or systems had been applied to a new country, but realized that the problems of the Old Continent still existed in the New Continent. Through his travel to Europe, Dickens saw that the old habits and customs of the barbarous past were ‘strangely’ incorporated into the present. Hypocrisy and self-interest were everywhere he visited, and the violence of the past still had the possibility of re-occurrence. In the end, Dickens’s travel to the past and that to the future which are respectively represented by Europe and America both reconfirm his love and pride in his own country of the present. The purpose of this study is for the childhood English education department to prepare a systematic way of teaching English musical courses that primarily focus on students. To this end, a survey was conducted on 17 students who enrolled in the children’s English musical education class, which is a 3rd year major subject for the first semester of 2019. Through in-depth interviews, the students’ perceptions, pros and cons, improvements of the subject were examined. As a result of this study, students felt the classes should be organized as follows. First, classes should be organized in a way which theory, creativity and practice are equally balanced. Second, a musical based on English fairy tales should be used to teach English expressions that match the children’s level. Third, students should be familiar with teaching methods by watching multiple musicals. The last steps are for them to produce, and present English musicals. The result of this study should be practical for professors who are planning to teach children’s English musical to provide a different prospective to future children’s English teachers. They will not only improve their English but also develop creativity and emotional development as well as social skills. (Kwangju Women’s University)

This study’s aim is to identify and suggest a method for improving EFL learners’ fluency by activating their procedural memory through memorization and repetition activities. Improving L2 English learners’ fluency requires the frequent use in EFL classes of activities that depend on the procedural memory system, which underlies the implicit learning and processing of a wide range of perceptual-motor and cognitive skills (Ullman & Lovelett, 2016, p. 3). Four college students, all English majors with advanced reading skills, participated in this research. They selected three scenes from the movie 500 Days of Summer (Webb, 2009) and discussed them through the lens of their personal experiences with relationships. Subsequently, participants completed three rounds of memorization and repetition activities with one-week intervals between each round. The participants were required to express the characters’ feelings by memorizing and repeating the selected scenes. The study’s results indicate that all participants were initially reluctant to attempt memorization and repetition activities; however, after trying them, they became more willing to do so. Moreover, their attitudes towards memorizing and repeating became more positive. The participants’ mistakes in memorizing the movie scenes were reduced throughout the research process. Therefore, introducing more memorization and repetition activities, which have the capacity to activate students’ procedural memory, will improve the fluency of L2 learners. (Kookmin University)

The purpose of this paper is to examine how Parks uses food as a powerful metaphor in The Last Black Man for recalling the African-American’s memory and history. The watermelon in BLACK MAN WITH WATERMELON stands for the tortured black man’s history, fried chicken in BLACK WOMAN WITH FRIED DRUMSTICK implies a black mammy’s economical exploitation at home and the field respectively. Watermelon and fried chicken have been vital food images that continue to denigrate black subjects. Pork, grease and ham also mean tainted foodways or meals of African-Americans, referred to as soul food. However, Parks challenges mythical images with figures who have names related to soul food. The action of the black man comes back home and his black wife takes care of him to survive is repeatedly resurrected. BLACK WOMAN WITH FRIED DRUMSTICK is not represented as a stereotype faithful mammy but as a narrator of the story, a nurturer, a powerful motherlike figure who heals her family and others. Also, Parks imposes the oppressed, LOTS OF GREASE AND LOTS OF PORK and YES AND GREENS BLACK-EYED PEAS CORNBREAD to rewrite erased African-American history. (Namseoul University)

The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast William Wordsworth’s and Robert Frost’s view of nature in their poetry. Wordsworth saw that there was a soul in the nature, and that the soul of nature stimulated and purified his soul. Wordsworth thought human was a part of nature. He found the healing power that existed beyond the superficial appearance of nature. On the other hand, Frost recognized the mutual relations between man and nature that existed in a different dimension in human life. Nature was a kind of setting in human life for him. In his recognition of the view of nature. Frost attempted to establish the recovery of humanity through the bond of man and nature. His attitude toward nature had dualistic vision. In some of his poems nature reflected mystic beauty, peace or benevolence. However Frost described the dark side of nature in the most of his poems, bestial and savage intention, nature’s whispering its cruel invitations to disaster. (Korea Nazarene University)

It is safe to say that a variety of new perspectives and theories on man and the natural world, including several arguments for animal rights, had a great vogue during the latter decades of the 18th century. Wordsworth’s “Hart-Leap Well” placed at the outset of the second volume of Lyrical Ballads (1800) exemplifies, through several characters of the ballad, those various perspectives on the suffering and death of a hunted animal. While the first part focuses on the words and actions of Sir Walter given to self-centered pleasures, the second one juxtaposes the simple animistic creed of an old shepherd with the modern ecological perception of the poet-narrator emphasizing the resilient regenerative power of endangered ecosystems. The suffering and eventual death of the hunted hart serves as an occasion for the poet to realize that we should not “blend our pleasure or our pride/ With sorrow of the meanest thing that feels” and that every sentient being in the natural world is holy or, at least, has its own intrinsic worth. Wordsworth’s “simple song” for “thinking hearts” underscores our respect for, consideration of, and sympathy with the natural world as the foundation for the variety, complexity, and symbiosis of the interrelated and interdependent eco-community. Sophocles’ Antigone, Oedipus tyrannos, and Oedpous at Colonus are referred to as “the Theban plays” because all of them are based on the legends of the Cadmus royal family in Thebes. The central plot of the three Theban plays is on the story of Laius and his son Oedipus. Although Laius had been responsible for the sin, the cursing prophecy of the patricide and incest with his own mother had been happening onto his son Oedipus. Among these events relating to Laius and Oedipus, Sophocles has released Antigone, for the first Theban play, and then after 10 year later presented Oedipus tyrannos, the second play of three Theban plays And it has been 25 years later since for Oedipus at Colonus to be produced in public. This tell us each of three Theban plays represents individually the important phases of Sophocles’ life cycle: early period of youth, middle and old age in his life. In this context this paper aims to analyze Sophocles’ self-realization phases embedded in Antigone, Oedipus tyrannos, and Oedipus at Colonus in the light of C. G. Jung’ individuation process. Newborns are in a primordial state that the mother and the infant are in a perfect harmony. By the ‘good enough mother,’ the magical omnipotence of the infant is established, and by the process the true self is created: the powerful source of life. However, if the Id-needs of the baby are not satisfied, the infant becomes a docile child. This is the cause of false self, inflicting negative effects to life. In this paper, the theoretical basis of the reflective(primordial) true self, the illusive(self-reflective) true self and the imaginary·symbolic(self-projective) true self are analyzed in details according to the periods and stages of children’s developments. At the same time, these issues related to the fantastic self by mirror images, the loss of self through imitation, the loss of identity by vanity and the formation of false self by docile children are discussed through picture books. Finally, this thesis will explain the social and cultural significance of the true self. (Hannam University

This paper is aimed at examining how Christianity has legitimized the superiority of men over women and human over nature in Vinegar Tom. In the play, witches are not described as evil women who serve the devil but the people who are excluded from patriarchal community and capitalist society. Churchill insists that witches are not the passing craze in the past. In the name of Jews, women, blacks, new witches are still suffered from the social stigma. For fear of women and nature’s power and potential, patriarchism, capitalism and religion struggle to domesticate unruly women and disorderly nature through violence. To change negative signification on women’s history, women should find a way to express themselves and reweave women’s story on their own. Witches are the healers who have knowledge and the skills to cure people and nature and they are the martyrs who willingly sacrifice themselves to pursue the feminist spirituality and the goddess manifested in the nature. Women should be the political witches who speak about feminist spirituality and celebrate women’s body and nature. (Cheongju University)
