The purpose of this paper is two-fold: 1) to help EFL learners distinguish between language oriented practical expressions (LOPE) and socially oriented practical expressions (SOPE) or conventionalized expressions and 2) to promote EFL learners’ awareness on SOPE in an English television series. In order to do this, one case study was performed. Participants were three college students who were English majors. Material was an American TV drama, Desperate Housewives, season 1, episode 1. This case study consisted of 3 phases. In the first phase, the subjects had no instruction and picked out their preferable expressions. In the second phase, they had instruction only about a definition of SOPE. In the third phrase, they experienced how to enter into the target speech community and what to learn. The result showed that all the subjects moved from LOPE through SOPE. They all agreed that SOPE would be the better choice. The subjects could move out of ‘language learning’ and move into ‘social learning’ which means learning social norms, values, symbols, etc. The pedagogical implication is this. When you, as a teacher, instruct SOPE or conventionalized expressions, you should guide your students like the third phase of this study. You would do well to talk about norms, values, and symbols with your students through media utterances.(Kookmin University)

This essay aims to analyze the meaning of communities in Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Refugees, a collection of eight short stories. The stories deal with the painful experience each singular character―Vietnam refugees, an American veteran soldier returning to Vietnam, a ghost, victims of war, and so on―had during the war and the post-war. Searching for the meaning of the community in this collection, the essay utilizes recent philosophical ideas and views on community: mostly Jean-Luc Nancy’s inoperative community and Giorgio Agamben’s coming community. Nancy explores the ontological limit of community so that he presents a community where Others ethico-ontologically cohabit without threats of immanence of death and violence. Nancy’s inoperative community can be used to analyze the ontological status of refugees and their community though it lacks clarity for this application. On the other hand, Agamben takes on refugee as an example of homo sacer situated in state of exception. This essay, after the theoretical explanation, closly reads and analyzes three stories from the collection to speculate the singular representation of refugees and their communities.(Kangwon National University)

It is well established that multiple words with phonetic similarities are activated in the monolingual processing of spoken words. Yet relatively less is known about cross-language activation of phonetically similar words in the bilingual minds. The present study explored cross-language activation of mental lexicon in the spoken word processing of Korean learners of English (i.e., Korean L1-English L2 group). The data from Korean learners of English group were compared with those from native speakers of English (i.e.,English L1 only group). In the experimental task, they were asked to listen to spoken words in English while looking at a display with a target picture, a competitor picture whose Korean translation was phonetically overlapped with the target object, and two pictures of unrelated distractors. Their eye movements were analyzed. The Korean L1-English L2 group looked more often at the pictures of cross-language competitor than English L1 only group did. This finding strongly suggests the presence of non-selective access to both lexicons among the Korean learners of English during the spoken word processing in English. Namely, both L1 and L2 lexicons are spontaneously activated even when they were asked to process the spoken words in L2.(Kyung Hee University)

This study aims to investigate changes in students’ academic achievement through non-face-to-face level-differentiated college English education and their satisfaction with it. For these purposes, the researchers compared and analyzed two mock TOEIC tests given at the beginning of the 1st semester and the end of 2nd semester. We found that the academic achievement of the students at each level did not improve significantly. Surveys were conducted to check the satisfaction of the students with the non-face-to-face level-differentiated education. The results showed that the students in level 3 did not have much satisfaction with the non-face-to-face level-differentiated classes compared to the students in level 4 or 5. This shows that non-face-to-face classes do not give satisfaction to low-level students who have difficulty in self-directed learning. The expansion of non-face-to-face education is expected even in the post-COVID era. Therefore, professors' guidance and management will be required to improve students' self-directed learning ability. (Catholic Kwandong University)

This study examines the relation between two film adaptations of Little Women and the 2nd and 4th waves of feminism. Among many versions of Little Women, two movies in 1994 and 2019 are considered feminist ones because they search for Alcott’s hidden feminist messages between the lines of the original text, and try to reflect them. Remarkably, each movie includes the agendas of the 2nd and 4th waves of feminism. The former emphasizes the sisterhood and the sense of solidarity among women, which are the agendas of the feminist 2nd wave. The latter focuses on the intersectionality and contemporarity, which are the ones of the 4th wave. This study begins with the brief explanation of the flow of feminist movement of the 20th and 21st centuries. It further analyzes how each movie appropriates the agendas of each time, and how they are useful in understanding the concerns of each feminist movement. As long as the feminist movement is concerned with the required voices of time, a new type of Little Women will appear to represent the issues of the feminist movement of the era.

The current study aims to investigate English Education Majors’ perceptions of Jigsaw Cooperative Learning in a teaching methods course for English Education majors. The 20 participants completed pre- and post-surveys including open-ended questions. Group leaders also submitted reports after ‘Expert Group’ and ‘Jigsaw Group’ meetings. Feedback from participants suggested that the method is beneficial in terms of both cognitive and affective factors: it improved reading comprehension, analysis of sentence structure, oral presentation skills, and ability to summarize passages as well positively influencing interest, peers affinity, proactive participation, and responsibility for group achievement. Analysis of the data revealed that affective factors are positively correlated with academic achievement. The meeting reports indicated that the participants planned meetings and led activities autonomously after trial and error. The study implies that the work of learners should be monitored carefully and teachers should intervene only when necessary, provided teachers formulate and implement comprehensive and detailed lesson plans to facilitate courses successfully.(Kongju National University · Mokwon University)

The aim of this study is to examine the problems of the sexuality of black women oppressed in slavery in Beloved by Tony Morrison and to rediscover the sexuality of black women in Paradise. Tony Morrison, who deeply reflected on the hard lives of black women, points out the problems of black women's sexual oppression and seeks to secure the subjectivity of their sexuality. In Beloved, the body of black women in slavery is used as a tool for the reproduction of slavery and is raped. Black women's sexuality, which allows them to enjoy all things in the world, is suppressed. As a result, they decide not to pass on the pain of slavery they experienced to their children, so they commit the terrible thing of killing their children. Through the incarnated Beloved, Sethe has a rememory, and through the love of community women and Paul D, Sethe tries to achieve self-definition. In Paradise, the rediscovery of sexuality of black women was considered. As in Beloved, black women stained with patriarchy and rape paint themselves on the basement floor, objectify their pain, talk about each other's loud dreams, and heal their wounds little by little through a common process. In the ritual in the rain led by Consolata, black women awaken their previously insensitive senses of body and mind dance in the ecstasy of their own sexuality. (Chungnam National University)

This paper examines the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics, showing that poetic language of literature has a place in cognitive metaphor study. Far from being merely a matter of words, metaphor is a matter of thought, all kinds of thought: thought about emotion, about society, about human character, and about the nature of life and death. Also metaphor in the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics brought many changes to concepts about matter and gave many methods to the study of consciousness. Classical science had limits in the methods of observation and describing, but quantum and theory of relativity mechanics overcomes these limitations and describes matter and consciousness as two aspects of one thing. On the contrary, these metaphysical mechanics shook the cognitive framework of human beings. This study examines the relationship between theory of relativity and quantum mechanics as described by metaphor. I try to examine quantum and the theory of relativity mechanics in “West Running Brook”. This paper claims that integrated thinking ability in consilience raised questions as to our essential principles and gave them new theories. (Incheon National University)

By comparing understandings of politeness based on metapragmatic data, this study examined how politeness is conceptualized in Korea and the US. The data for the study consisted of responses to open-ended questionnaire by one hundred female undergraduates and graduates (fifty from each group). The data analysis divides into two parts: one exploring abstract conceptualizations of politeness in the US and Korea and the other discussing situated instances of polite behaviors in the respective cultures. The findings emerging from the contrastive analysis showed that there are similarities as well as some differences. A notable similarity between the two groups was that both groups conceptualized politeness mainly as ‘consideration’ and ‘appropriate behavior’. The main difference was that the American participants related politeness to public settings involving strangers while the Koreans provided many private examples as well as public ones. Findings seem to be in line with current approaches to politeness which view politeness as relational and concerns for others rather than strategic use of linguistic performance underlying earlier theories of politeness. The purpose of this study is to analyze infographics that deliver information and messages with images and text and have practical potentials for L2 writing pedagogy. It is a qualitative text analysis that delves deeper into the limited number of infographics, unveiling their coherent structures and elements cohesively connected to one another. Two infographics selected for this study represent the rhetorical genres of argument and explanation. This study showed the results of in-depth examinations on two infographics, and its examinations involved the rhetorical mode, the layout structure, verbal and non-verbal elements, and rhetorical relations. Especially, the rhetorical relations of each infographic were identified with the use of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST). It found that the two infographics demonstrated their unique and coherent structure, signifying a variety of rhetorical relations between images and texts, as well as between texts.
