Regardless of the East and the West, the past and the present, it has been man`s great wish for a long time to move to another world different from this world where they are living now to experience new things. "Dream" has been functioned as a channel to fulfill the wish, and "fantasy movies" of today also serves as an alternative device of the dream. Working with the "Butterfly Dream" in the Namhwa chingyong by Changja and the "Story of Buddhist monk Sarana" in the Chappo changgyong as representative dream discourses of East Asia and the "Avatar" and the "Matrix" as Western fanstasy movies, this article intends to explore how this primary desire acquires the universality beyond the difference of the time and the place. The characteristics of dream discourses can be capsulated as follows: first, a dreamer moves to another world different from real world by the act of dreaming to experience unreal things, and secondly the dreamer becomes to get a kind of awakening relating to life. This awakening or the change of mentality does not occur in the horizontal level like from A to A`, but occur in the vertical level like from A to B, which is accompanied by more matured view of life and human existence. This article showed the extent to which if the change of mentality embodied in the "Butterfly Dream" takes on the ontological character, that of the mentality embodied in the "Story of Buddhist monk Sarana" takes on the axiological character. Furthermore, this article extended the discussion to the fantasy movies to explain that the case of the "Avatar" is close to the Taoist paradigm represented by the "Butterfly Dream" and that of the "Matrix" is close to the Buddhist paradigm represented by the "Story of Buddhist monk Sarana."

The investigation of Joseon as the colony of Japan Empire is the essential task for modern Korean literature studies. As the core curriculum of Japanese colonial education, Japanese language is the influential factor for the formation of modern Korean language and culture. Through making the list of translated units from Joseon Government General`s Japanese textbooks in Joseon government generla`s Joseoneo and Classical Chinese textbooks, I analyze the translational aspects of Japanese colonial education. In colonial education policy, Japanese language is the model of Joseoneo education. Through the research of colonial textbook`s translational aspects, three issues can be represented. The first, in Joseoneo and Classical Chinese readers, important units are translated from writings of Japanese colonial bureaucrats. Japanese bureaucratic language is the role model for Joseoneo in colonial education. The second, as the educatee of colonial education, Joseon students have to accept the view of colonists about Joseon history and culture. The third, through the revision of textbooks, Japanese colonial educators broaden units about Joseon history and culture in textbooks. Also, the decrease of Classical Chinese units is the significant aspect, representing the linguistic transition in colonial Korea.

This paper aims to explain a marked individuality and universality of literary spirit in the poetry of Borges and Lee Hyunggi. They encounter through aleph. Lee Hyunggi sees aleph of Borges as original and symbolic world which transcends his creativity. From an intertextual perspective, Borges and Lee Hyunggi do not simply relate, but they share similarity and universality. They try to defy conventional recognition and explore nihil of beings who are in confusion. Their nihilism shows that oriental thought can be mixed and integrated with western thought by Buddhism. In order to examine nihilistic world in the poetry of Borges and Lee Hyunggi, this paper reads their works closely. Even with all the contrasts between the two literaty works, there are still similarities; self, symbol, subject matter, and motif. For this reason, this paper expands common grounds of their poetic world to four steps. It is "I and you―cosmic irony of beings and shadows", "stone or sand―abyss of chaos and infinite labyrinths", "space and moon―a bitter struggle with the absolute void and mysterious being", "poem and dream―dream about nihil and immortal poem."This comparative study on Lee Hyunggi and Borges grows more intriguing in the context of world literature. They are the poets who dream about nihil and create immortal poem using metaphysical imagination that doubts, rejects and disbands an impenetrable world. Through this analytical process, certain conclusions were made regarding Borges and Lee Hyunggi; it is literary trait and universality that this paper finds out. Therefore, this paper can be developed into study to compare Korean literature to world literature.

This paper studies the mathematical problems in the 18th century novels. Robinson reported his journal with number when he was stranded into a deserted island. This means that human being can show the wisdom of how to live without having any merits of civilization. And Gulliver made readers imagine geometric worlds that were different from the real world. Both of the two characters not only provided imaginary places but also failed to demonstrate its mathematical things. But here I called it pure mathematical model giving multiple image to the real world. In order to open the mathematical argument it is true that we start with idea of Plato and logic of Aristotle. It is very important to know their concept of sense and intelligence in philosophy to have in common the image and infinitesimal of number. The notion of infinitesimal from Zeno`s paradox verifies strict testimony of problem in philosophy and extends its real meaning from geometric existence in novel. Proof is a main method to testify the truth and falsity of proposition. But all of them have abstractive structures where we can change our inner thought, tell the way of speaking and organize our pure form in logic. There were mathematical and geometric factors typically in Robinson Crusoe by Defoe and Gulliver`s Travels by Swift. When we want to see the real life of character in novel, the notion of matheme is directly related to our insight and understanding. On the one hand, the characters in novel show us their reason, rationality, perfection, and possibility of unreal world, on the other hand, we catch the notion of real world through the mathematical understanding. Therefore, the matheme makes us find the minimal meaning of the situation and have its place of possible knowledge.

Elysian Fields depicted in Hesiod`s Works and Days are called ``the Island of the Blessed.`` Elysian Fields become the prototype of Western thoughts and fantasy related to the islands of paradise. It is Greek philosopher Plato who first gave stimulus to the formation of the idea of island-ideal state with Elysian Fields legend in the West. Plato himself, however, did not mention the island where the idea state was realized. He had just mentioned the island in which strong power was built in the context of discussing the ideal state. Plato`s story about the ideal state and island state stirred the imagination of many later thinkers. For example, in the Hellenism age, Iambulos is known to have left writings about ``Island of the Sun`` in which ideal society was formed. The Christian doctrine of the Middle Ages that the true paradise exists in heaven and that the worldly order is intended by God did not allow the idea of worldly ideal society. The Christian doctrine, however, did not permit the denial of the worldly order but recognized the earthly paradise based on the Messiah, that is, longing for Canaan. And Canaan was commonly imagined as an island. Thomas More`s Utopia had been influenced by ancient Greek thoughts, and its idea was gotten from the geographical discoveries. More`s Utopia, like a book of transition period, has two aspects of return to the Middle Ages and the prior taking of modern times. First, the agriculture-oriented communistic system has quite the nature of return to the Middle Ages in that it is reminiscent of medieval brother community. However, citizens` legal and economic equality, representative democracy, federal political system, and implementation of common education, and religious pluralism prove the prior taking of modernity of national planning. Like More, Campanella views human beings` selfishness and the desire to possess as the root of all evil, and attempts to control these by the communistic system and ethical and religious education. But Campanella`s ideal can easily be combined with the ideology of an absolute monarchy, which can be said to be modern in a sense. It is because the City of the Sun resembles the absolute monarchy that emerged and developed in the early part of modern times. Campanella, however, believed that the existing powerful state plays the role of the medium to bring about a better future state faster. The New Atlantis (1624), which is referred to as three great ``island-Utopia`` literatures of Renaissance together with Utopia and The City of the Sun, is the work of Francis Bacon. In this book Bacon never feels any problem in the absolutism, the strict class order, and the economic order based on private property. But in Bacon`s thoughts, the ruling main body leading this development is no longer a monarch but scientists. And the contribution of these people pursues in the direction of better satisfying the desires of individual humans. In this sense, Bacon`s idea of island-Utopia differs essentially from the idea of island-Utopia of More and Campanella who attempted to realize the ideal state through the control of desires.

This paper tries to explore the interface between Jacques Ranciere`s aesthetic politics and Judith Butler`s gender politics through If These Walls Could Speak 2. In the interface, the political lesbian subjects are born. Ranciere`s aesthetic politics reveals ``the distribution of sensible`` which signifies the rules allotting and regulating the position of people according to the norm of ``universal consensus``. Judith Butler`s gender politics shows the non-sovereign performativity which is connected to the cultural and social constructivism of gender and speech act. If These Walls Could Speak 2 consists of "1961"(dir. Jane Anderson), "1972"(dir. Martha Coolidge), and "2000"(dir. Anne Heche) as a HBO trilogy. The subjectivation courses of the political lesbian subjects take place in the same house of the three films. What links the three films that make up These Walls Could Speak 2 is the footage of feminist and lesbian and gay demonstrations. The significant footage supports this film`s practical politics. The house of lesbians is a place of lesbian intimacy but it is figured as a political zone in each film. In the film "1961", as ``a zone of those without portion``, a lesbian Edith who is excluded under the norm ``family`` which is constituted by ``universal consensus`` of heterosexual society is an unintelligible person outside the counting. In the "1972", as ‘a zone of various genders``, a lesbian Linda and ``a drag`` Amy re-draw the dichotomous gender norm, showing the limits that feminists and lesbians re-appropriate the power of ``police``. In the last film "2002", as ‘a zone of re-constituting gender discourse``, a lesbian couple Fran and Kal try to make a post-family through artificial insemination. The lesbian couple`s post-family is an attack on the parental and Oedipal family. So, If These Walls Could Speak 2 is a political zone where the subjectivation courses of political lesbian subjects happen.

「The Daily News」in the 1920`s released the article which induced the Korean workers to emigrate Japanese land. In this context, this appeared the irony situation in the fact that the Paper which had stood up for the Japanese Government-General of Korea in the success of the 1910`s wrote the novel, 「Bulkgot」overally exposed the capital issue directly to be connected with the Japan`s invasion into the Korea. The fact that the「Bulkgot」added the interest of the story with the excellent illustration and newly tried the communication with the readers is understood in this aspect of the disappeared merit of 「The Daily News」which was the only Korean language paper until 1920`s before that the Imperial Japan claimed to advocate the ``cultural politics`` and permit the issue of the Korean language newspapers, 『Dong-A ilbo』,『Chosunilbo』,『Sisasinmun』 etc. The serial publishing of the「Bulkgot」in the context of Korean newspaper`s field at the 1920`s time is the product of the literary circles which should each time provide the reading material in the face of the stiff competition between the newspapers. This「Bulkgot」demolished the proletariat in the form and the bourgeois in the novel of the symmetric equation, and seperated the piece and the author. The omission, drop and revision including the illustration of the rather unprecedented translation text in comparison of the Japanese language text resulted in the contents difference which added the story interest and newly tried the communication with the readers. And in this juncture of the revision, the person directly of the labor struggle was more conscientized, and that scene was increasingly factually featured. In these respects, the「Bulkgot」as the literature of the Fourth Class took the more advantage than other novels. Futhermore we can get a taste of the Korean society fragmentarily in the course of the comparison and review of these two novels and easily confirm the fact that the Japanese counteracted more strongly than the Korean in the face of the ideology crackdown, and the single article than the newspaper within Japan. Although the Korean registration, geographical name, and the wording of the translator induced the readers to read the text in the manner of the 「Bulkgot」handled the Korean society issue at that time not the Japanese, the class issue of the transltion text had extended the problem of nation, not being collected to the Korean society. This is explained in the context that The issues of the labor class and the capital in one state are enlarged to the Colonial and nation problem when interfering with the situation of the Colonial rule. We can easily find in 「Bulkgot」here and there the cases the simple alteration of the language represented the standpoint of the translation principal in the situation of the Colonized. The problem is the fact that as a result of that the 「Bulkkot」and 「Bulkgot」corresponded the Colonial policy of the Imperial Japan which suggested the utopia of the Hokkaido and North Gando unlike real, in the field of the Pro-literature which should point out the capitalism issue and the problem between capitalist and laborer, the domination logic of the Colonial rule still worked.

This paper discusses the attitude to the class consciousness in the 19th century novels through Charlotte Bronte`s Jane Eyre and Charles Dickens`s Great Expectations. There was a changing social attitude about the class over the society at large. Many people in lower class aspired to be higher in the social class, and if they, mostly men, achieved economic success, his social rank could be higher. However, women were difficult to have upward opportunities. Many women wanted to be high class through the marriage, but economic value was more important than marriage. In this respect, Bronte and Dickens show desire about upper class and process of the rise of the social class at that time. In Jane Eyre, Jane as a governess was neither a maid nor the working-class. Jane as a low middle-class married an upper class man. However she achieved higher social rank with a legacy from her uncle before marriage, and her legacy was an opportunity to enable her to marry Rochester who was the gentry. Bronte shows that economic power is more important than marriage in woman`s rise of the social class. In Great Expectations, Pip was affected by the notion of the gentlemanship at that time. Traditionally gentleman was regarded as the gentry but self-made men could become a gentleman in the mid 19th century. Expectations Pip received was the money from the convict, and unsuitable for a noble gentleman. Dickens shows that true gentleman have to possess the spiritual values as well as the material values through the growth of Pip. Eventually, Pip realized his wrong desire to be a gentleman and acquired the value of the true gentlemanship. Bronte and Dickens reveal a prevalent view about desire and process of the rise of the social class in their novel, but at the same time, they emphasize that hierarchical structure by succession can be changed, depending on material condition and education.
