I would refer to the value of Yeom Sang Seob’ life and literature before I would mention the result and task of Yeom Sang Seob’s study. Yeom Sang Seob hold an important position in korean modern literature. His life kept up his resistance to Japan and especially long novels among his literary works were valued prominent works refer precisely to Japanese imperialism. Accordingly study on his literature and life is a natural fact. As of today above all things the wisdom of his life and his literature technique are acutely required. As we think like this It is natural to examine that how Yeom Sang Seob’study has been progressed. In addition it is keenly required to guess the task searching in the future. During that time Yeom Sang Seob' studies have been remarkable. Approximately the studies of Yeom Sang Seob have been dialectically developed through four stages. The first stage is 『A study of Yeom Sang Seob』(Korea University published, a 570-page oct. volume) written by Prof. Kim Jong Kyun in 1974, the second stage is 『A study of Yeom Sang Seob』(Seoul University published, a 945-page, oct volume) written by Prof. Kim Yun Sik in 1987, the third stage『literature in a turbulent age』(Ye Ji Gak published, a 541-page oct. volume) written by in 1991, and the forth stage 『A study of Yeom Sang Seob’s long novels』(Seogang University published, a 289-page, oct. volume) written by Prof. Kim Kycong Su in 1999. The total pages of these works have reached a 2345-page oct. volume. These theses on Yeom Sang Seob have been a bulky quantity considering that they are composed of only pure treatises. Studies of Yeom Sang Seob have been thrivingly developed and have accomplished the results of high level. From now on the subject in the5 method that how we could develop the study of Yeom Sang Seob , that is the task of Yeom Sang Seob’ study could not help being a important question because so much studies have been accumulated. However it is also a fact that the studies of Yeom Sang Seob would be infinitey, newly searched. In other words a study in comparative literature aspect, in the science literature aspect, and in the estheticism aspect, and so forth. Studies of various spheres would be waiting. The sincere and competent young scholars’ studies would be very much waited.

This thesis is a study on ≪Manse-Jeon≫ written by Yeom Sang-seob in 1924 In this thesis what I makes dear is two : the one is the meaning of ‘tomb’, the other is the intention of the author Yeom Sang-seob. Especially I paied attention to the distance between the author and the hero, in-hwa lee. The result is as follows. (1) The meaning of ‘tomb’ is not one, but several. The ‘tomb’ have been till now explained that the ‘tomb’ is the symbol of the colonial Chosun. But the 'tomb' also means all restriction that keeps the hero from realization of the freedom of the individual. He want th free himself from his family and his lover, jeong-ja. But his escape from the tomb is ideal, because his desire is essentially impossible. (2) The distance said above is, at the first, long. The author has a critical distance th the hero. But at the end it is near, so the author is not different from the hero. The hero's desire is the same of the author’s. But the coherence does not diminish the value of《Manse-Jeon》. On the contrary for that reason 《Manse-Jeon》becomes problematic.

This treatise is a study on the fictions of Yeom Sang Seob, especially during his second trip to Japan. His second trip to Japan, from 1926 to 1928, is a turning point of his life as a novelist. The reason is that the works of this period show one pace of the process of modem Korean fiction. Yeom Sang Seob works in this period is devided into two groups. The one is short stories that narrated the his fiction-making processes and his consciousness about the ficition genre. And the other is medium length stories, focusing on the conditions of the colonial korea. This process shows that Yeom Sang Seob fictuions are shifted from the acquisitions of fictional devices such as POV and the narrative voices and objective depiction to the novelization of reality of the colonial korea. This features are founded in the fictions like Two departures. The unresolved, and Nam Chung-Seo. This short novels are the monumental works of the 1920s. In 1930s, Yeom Sang Seob wrote the realistic novels like Three Generations, Fig, Mad Fury, the monumental works of Modern Korean Novel. In this sense, Yeom Sang Seob second trip to Japan and the works produced in the period is very problematic in the formation of modern Korean Literature.

Even though Mad Fury\ the one of Yeom Sang Seob’s earlier novels, has the similiar characteristics with his another canons, it’s literary value hasn’t been evaluated. This thesis intends to revise that problem through the detailed reading on work itself. For this purpose, this thesis looks into the meaning of modern space and the aspect as the modern ‘female’ domestic novel. First, ‘Western-style house’ is the physical analogy of Min Byung Cheon’s family, It shows not only the fall of middle class’s family in colonial society but also Keong Ok’s destiny. The dynamics and contradiction around the 'exhibition grounds' characterizes the surface, distorted modernization at colonial period. Both spaces play the mutual supplement each other. Second, this novel is deployed in the conflict between step-mother and daughter. Because these women pursue the sexual desire or money, we can say that this novel is the ‘modern’ and 'female’ domestic novel. However, their desires are not complex but unitary, so can’t help being frustrated. Of course the writer’s negative vision about ‘new woman’ and neutral world-view hinder this novel in accomplishing modern form of desire on female's stand point. Instead of the consideration about woman’s modern desire, the writer finds the new possibility from characters who are outside familial order. But this new order doesn't have concrete shapes, and it is based on the universal humanism like morality or fidelity.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the short stories of Yeom, Sang Seob in his latter period. The narrative fiction should have a structure and an various aesthetic element. It must, of course, stand in recognizable relation to life. Such novelist as Yeom Sang Seob offers less a relation than a world. in its entirety. Especially Yeom, Sang Seob has such a way to create the world which is recognizable as overlapping the usual things. As the realistic writer, Yeom, Sang Seob and his characters in his fiction showed a lot ofdetail things, so called trivialism, by the changes in those process. So the way to create ironical fictions as the result of his dose observation during the latter period in Yeom, Sang Seob short stories which are not the limit of realism on the contrary they are empathized that the close observation and cynicism are not only the essential core of the epistemology of Yeom but also his characteristic technical device which is indispensable for his realism. In conclusion the short stories of Yeom, Sang Seob in his latter period Yeom, Sang Seob should be revaluated positively and collectively.

In this study, I researched into novelist Kim-Namchun and his novel “An aquarium of Love”. His 1930s novel “An aquarium of Love” is connected with his 'Observation theory’. That theory is succeeded to his “Usage theory”. It is my analysis that 'Observation theory’ reflect a difficult situation of the latter half 1930s. In this period, many novels aim at maintaining open understanding of socio-political issues. It is understandable with the collapse in ideologies of the authors that the context of the novels of the 1930s changed to become focused on the smaller but just as important everyday life problems. “An aquarium of Love” also aim at maintaining open understanding of socio-political issues by meeting all the comforting requirement as per the reader and focused on the smaller but just as important everyday life problems. When the novels during the latter and former periods are compared, “An aquarium of Love” emphasize a pattern of including the actual characteristics. When world issues begin to become insecure in its foundation, it is inevitable that society takes greater interest in daily lire. I have discovered that issues of daily life must be the novels foundation. And because the novels are founded upon everyday concerns, the novels have experienced longevity. It is my final conclusion that with the transition from ideology based novel to the novel based on common daily issues that the novels of the latter half of the 1930s have had such strength to survive.

This article intends to examine the relationship to the subject’s desire and the plot including Lee, Tae-Jun's The Second Fate. The plot in this article suggests rather dynamics formed by desire not the principle story line. In my opinion, the plot implies the unconscious desire of the author. This article focuses to the significance of Jove triangles in Lee, Tae-Jun’s long novels and the formation of the plot in this structure. Evermore, this article is going to reveal the significance of desires as a driving power of the plotting. Ultimately, I want to examine the author’s desire through the plotting. Lee, Tae-Jun in The Second Fate desires unconsciously not to damage his moral purity by keeping a certain distance from the reality. This unspotted morality is called a retired desire(Cheo-Sa-Jeok Desire) Such a desire characterizes Lee, Tae-Jun’s early long novels including The Second Fate. The love triangles which play an important role in The Second Fate suggest not the conflicts between money and love in the popular novels, but typical conflict of the structure of desire caused by desiring the other’s desire. Especially, Eun, Pil-Jae as a subject in this novel desires the unspotted conscience and this is the object of the desire with which he wants to be oneness. This desire of the subject is related with the authorial retired desire(Cheo-Sa-Jeok Desire)

The intention of this thesis was to overcome the problem that the Korean war novels have been little studied, although they have an important role in the Korean literary history. In this sense, I tried to clarify the characteristics of the Korean war novel written by Hwang, Soon-won. His novel published during the Korean war defended humanity against the atrocities of the Korean war, and pursued the ideal society. Instead, other writers appraised the Korean war in their writings. That is why his war novel deserves a special position in our Korean literary history. After the Korean war, Hwang published many novels that criticized the social disaster chat occurred during and after the Korean war with more realistic descriptions or symbols. Especially, his view has the right attitude on the ideology of the Korean war. Other Korean war novels have to pursue it in the future. So, I think that his war novel during this period deserves a meaningful position in the literary history. Some critics insist that his war novel has its limitations. They say that it only shows the individual wound of the war instead of the historical meaning of the Korean war, it shows society abstractly as a moral attitude rather than concretely. But Hwang had represented it against the realism in 1986. I think that his literary uniqueness is related with this attitude for the literature and the world. So, I will research this relationship in his literature for the next time.
