I have examined on aesthetic code of Toji, written by Park, Kyoung- rhee. Especially I guess Toji has a number of characters more than 600 who were obsessed with regret, a kind of Korean ethos. Regret of Korean people is a mental state of repression by the problems of class, social status, gender, the Japanese colonial situation and the face of human-being’s existence, etc. I absolutely tried to pick up the way of sublimating their regrets in the aesthetic dimension of the text. The aesthetic code could be divided three. For instance, they are fantastic code, naturalistic code, and artistic code. As follows：
①The fantastic code has a few motives of illusion, fantasy, vision mysticism of referring [o Kim, Hwan’s dream and retrospection on his lover who is a madam of Byuldang and Kik-sang’s dream of 'Returning horse'.
②The naturalistic code is presented by Seo, Keum-dol, Ki-hwa(Bong- soon), Joo-gap, which is a natural sen.se of beauty of Korean folks. They are great singers, even though they have never learned music, dance from any orthodox school or teacher. They are possessed by a sensibility of an autonomous libido and high spirits, so-called an aesthetic sense, ‘Ggi’ or 'Poongryu'.
③The artisic code is representd by the professional artists, Kil-sang, (Budhhism painter) Byung-soo(craftsman), Yong-gwang(saxophoni.st). They all have family troubles with an orphant(Kil-sang)t physical handicapped (a humpback) and his parents' sinful deeds (Bynng-soo), a grand son of a butcher of his maternal family line(Yong-gwang). Then, these
would be their trauma. So, Kil-sang's painting(the Goddess of Mercy), Byung-Soo’s a woodwork, and Yong-gwang's saxophone are the ways of sublimating their regrets.
