< The Wife of an Inept > describes a character, named Young Sook, a modern woman, who leaves her home dreaming to become a “Nora in Chosun” and was brought to min. Many modern women who appear in the works of Kim Dong In including this work are illustrated us flighty persons who adopt easily new trends. One of the cause for this might he that Kim Dong In, as a writer, recognized the unreasonable way that Chosun accepted modern era. And also the meaning of “DaedongKang”, which symbolizes a world that Kim Dong In aspired, may be another cause.
Through Daedong Kang, Kim Dong In illustrates an illusion of ideal world which he himself has created. It can he said that world may be Chosun represented by Giseng, Music of Chosun, and traditional festivals of Chosun. Then, it is quite understandable that Kim Dong In could not but find himself distant from the new women, modern law systems, modern thoughts, and modern religions. Because, how resonable and valuable it might he, this modern world could not stand together with the world of Daedong Kang which consisted of the arts of Giseng and music of Chosun.
It is really an irony that by this feeling of distance Kim Dong In could have a far more objective view in some aspect concerning the Chosun’s acceptance of modern era than most of other contemporary writers who admired the modern era. The sober and objective view concerning the Chosun’s acceptance of the modern era that can be found in < The Wife of an Inept > might be presented as a definite example.
