< The Wife of an Inept > describes a character, named Young Sook, a modern woman, who leaves her home dreaming to become a “Nora in Chosun” and was brought to min. Many modern women who appear in the works of Kim Dong In including this work are illustrated us flighty persons who adopt easily new trends. One of the cause for this might he that Kim Dong In, as a writer, recognized the unreasonable way that Chosun accepted modern era. And also the meaning of “DaedongKang”, which symbolizes a world that Kim Dong In aspired, may be another cause. Through Daedong Kang, Kim Dong In illustrates an illusion of ideal world which he himself has created. It can he said that world may be Chosun represented by Giseng, Music of Chosun, and traditional festivals of Chosun. Then, it is quite understandable that Kim Dong In could not but find himself distant from the new women, modern law systems, modern thoughts, and modern religions. Because, how resonable and valuable it might he, this modern world could not stand together with the world of Daedong Kang which consisted of the arts of Giseng and music of Chosun. It is really an irony that by this feeling of distance Kim Dong In could have a far more objective view in some aspect concerning the Chosun’s acceptance of modern era than most of other contemporary writers who admired the modern era. The sober and objective view concerning the Chosun’s acceptance of the modern era that can be found in < The Wife of an Inept > might be presented as a definite example.

This thesis considers Kim, Dong-In’s criticism connected with Korean modern novels. Kim, Dong-In is one of the very early Korean modern novelists, and his「How to compose novels」is the earliest essay dealing with writing fiction in the history of Korean modern literature. In this essay, Kim, Dong-In stressed the perfect plot of novel, and he also stressed the importance of handling characters. He was concerned about ‘unitary description’ that means a writer narrates through only one of main characters. Kim gave warning of the writer’s intervention in narrative fiction. His effort that went into the research in creative writing had an effect on his literally style and the early Korean modern literally movement.

This paper concentrated on the meaning of madness observed in artist's novels of Kim Dong-In. This paper also examined Dong-In's approaches to arts through mildness in his works, meaning of madness and how the recognition through madness was related to the creation of identity of modern literature of Korea. Artists held the absolute position for Dong-In. Such a concept was originated from the strong consciousness on special qualities of modern artists. Dong-In correlated the origin of creativity of modern artists with the neglect of rationality, that is, madness status. Next, Dong-In made the absolutized the genius and the women as the aesthetic representation. For Dong-In, the genius was not the concept that liberated an individual as a social subject but the specified and absolutized subject, that is, artists. Furthermore, the women were the existence of mysterious illusion combined with subjective imagination. Such a timeless concept on woman is linked to Dong-In’s actual concept on woman that denied the creativity and personality of women. The absolutism of arts and aesthetics of Dong-In described above was summed up as the aesthetics of ‘eyes’ and monomaniacal madness. The attachment to eyes was concluded as the visual centrality. This is the token of thorough egocentrism that someone believes only what he/she directly sees. Such attachment was expressed as the egocentric attachment to an object, that is, monomaniacal madness. This absolutism was also observed in the literary theory. The literature of Dong-In and his literary theory contributed on strengthening the modern identity of literature through the hierarchical speculation for distinction in the history of Korean modern literature. In this process, arts were absolutized in the name of autonomy. A series of discussions identified that “Madness” appeared in artist’s novels of Dong-In acted as one of approaches to recognize the world beyond the level as the simple material.

There is no doubt, that Kim Dong-in is one of the most outstanding writers of the 1920~30s in the history of the Korean literature. As a writer of the modem period, he made a great contribution to the development of the new Korean literature, especially in the field of introducing to the Korean readers different literary trends, like naturalism and aesthetism, and is also famous as a prominent short story writer. Most of the Korean researchers used to study Kim Dong-in's literary work in the comparison to the new features of the modern period of the Korean literature. But in this paper, the author made an attempt to comparise his literary heritage not only from the sight of the literary innovations, but also from the sight of the traditional features preserved in the Korean classical literature. As a foreigner, the author tries to trace Kim Dong-in's short stories like an 'outsider' (non-Korean researcher), and makes a conclusion, that though Kim Dong-in in many senses is a new-trend writer, he at the same time can be called an original Korean-oriented author, who’s literary roots can be found in the classical Korean literary tradition. For example, his short stories can be compared with the short stories (folktales) of the 15-17th centuries - p’aesol’, in which life is also described as itself, naturally, with its bright and dark sides.

This essay aims to consider the way women are connected with popularity and Japanophilism and its ideology. For this, following arguments on Chae Man Sik’s A Biography of a Woman (1944) will be analyzed, which has intertextual relations with Mother(1943) and Life of a Woman(1947): a reason why A Biography of a Woman has complete narrative composition relatively than other two novels; why difficulties undergone by a mother can have great significance equivalent to socio-historical reflections. We can have the confirmation that achievements of this novel are fulfilled by the combination of popular narrative structure or sufferings of a traditional woman with the logic of Japanophilism. Whereas former researches are generally restricted to simple observations on the logic of Japanophilism or the one of popularity, this paper focuses on the complementary relations of these two kinds of logic, which have structural and ideological affinities and reinforce and encourage each other. The ideology of Japanophilism could be revealed most obviously through the grammar of popularity. Furthermore, it is of importance that the author imposes on women a role of node binding two logics. In this novel, the woman is merely utilized as the most effective propagandistic device for providing the grammar of Japanophilism to the public.

Ieo-do 「Ieo Island」’ is an invisible island of which legend has being handed down to people in Jeju-do 「Jeju island」. Lee Cheong-jun took the legend of ‘Ieo-do’ as a short story titled “Ieodo”. It means that the writer granted a significant form which is linguistic figuration to fictional truth and fantasy. The writer has an acute sense of abstract thinking. He manifested his own ideal concept in this story, “Ieodo”. In this paper, we inquired Lee Cheong-jun’s writing by examining textual composition and disposition of language in “Ieodo" as a significant form. This writing of “Ieodo” has three distinctive features. The first, the sentences in this work are signifiant expressions of the subject(the, character named Seon-u Hyeon)’ active desire. The second, (he main character, Seon-u Hyeon, recomposes his memory on purpose of interring the relation between the disappearance of Cheon Nam-seok and the exigence of the invisible island ‘Ieodo’. And Seon-u Hyeon’s memory is not a pure occurrence hut a sort of logical inference. The third, the words of this work perform the meaning of the existence of Ieodo for people in Jeju-do. As a result “Ieodo” is a concrete story about the original legend of Ieodo. The meaning of this story is the same as the original meaning believed by people in Jeju-do. Because the story is the more contract version of the original legend, “Ieodo” is rather less meaningful than the legend of Ieodo. So that the author made up for the reduced meaning of ibis story, he added another explanation for the meaning of Ieodo. He gave an account for that directly in the final chapter like an epilogue. He described an ultimate theme in that last chapter. His message seems that he had attained a truth of the meaning of invisible thing or fantastic world. Nevertheless the awareness of that truth is not dragged out of the process of this story. The main theme of fantasy’ truth is likely to be separated from the story itself. After all, the fantasy in this work “Ieodo” is described as a discourse of subjective illusion.

The aim of this article is founding the total system and structure of Korean creation-myth and researching for the formula of primary thought through the three Korean creation-myths, < Changsega(創世歌):The Song of Creation >, < Flood and tree-boy >, < Flood and brother-sister >. In other words, I hope to reconstruct the Korean creation-mythology tradition and seek for the meaning-system of that mythology. Those myths common focus on the ‘creation’ of the human and his world. The theme of creation in those myths is approached with the sub theme which are the creator and creature, the relation of god and the principle of the making mankind etc. to the prototypical imaginations and primary thought working in the creation myths. Each stories are connected with others and founded the set with hierarchy; the world of Maitreya(彌勒) → the world of Buddha(釋迦)→ the world of tree-boy → the world of brother and sister. These myths show how to create the human and his own world and the meaning system through the opposition relationship. That could conduct us to the primary consciousness, imagination and present introspection of the about origin of the human and world.

Na Unkyu's Arirang is clearly the origin of Korean Film. However it is in a entirely different sense from explanation and interpretation constructed by discourses of resistant nationalism and artistic realism. Modernity of Arirang was at first embodied through the aesthetic, social meaning and effect of Arirang's box-office value as commercial film. First of all, melodramatic characteristic of Arirang's narrative made a significant contribution to drag repressed experience and emotional structure which most of people in colonial modern society had shared together into public field of theater, and then to identify with them emotionally. And Arirang opened a possibility of realization of “Joseon film” as an independent modern popular art through organizing and maximizing the melodramatic genre-effect through means of improvement of film language and forms of expression. Especially “imagination of the nation” which was produced in watching experiences could be realize only by that melodramatic genre-effect. It is precisely that point where we can talk about modernity of Arirang as the origin of “Nation Film”.
