A learners motivation in learning is very important, particularly in the case of Korean language education, because most of the Korean language courses in Korean Language Institutes are for adults(over 18), they need to analyze the relationship between learners motivation and learning achievement from the viewpoint of adult learning. This study is based on a interview survey on 15 adults foreigners learning Korean as a second language in a university in Busan. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the differences of learning achievement among students with different learning motivations in order to find a way to improve the learning achievement. We need to ensure that students in this study have the same degree of motivation as found in adult learners in general, and learners have various motivations for learning Korean as a second language. According to their motivation, there has been difference of interest, participation and attitude, as well as learning achievement in class. Therefore, it`s important to understanding the motivation of learners. Also, it requires that the Korean Institutes have interest in learning achievement, and the teacher needs to give the learners a strong motivation. (Dong-A University, Pusan National University)

Until now, there has been little study, if any, in teaching Korean as a foreign language in French-speaking countries compared to relevant studies in the English, Chinese or Japanese-speaking areas. Against this backdrop, two Korean teaching materials, namely `Korean 1`, `Integrated Korean Beginning 1`, have been selected to analyze their merits and defects when actually used in the classroom where students have chosen Korean as their first or second foreign language in their major. The objective of this research consists in developing more favorable teaching materials, their composition, learning activities and other teaching environment in teaching and learning Korean as a foreign language in France. In addition, students` opinions on teaching materials have also been reflected in proposing some improvements to contribute to developing more effective measures in teaching the Korean language. This research takes a critical stance and analyzes research trends in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language as published in the Journal of Korean Language Education, one of the major journals in the field. A total of 330 studies, employing either primary research methods (i.e., quantitative, qualitative or combining both) or secondary research methods, published in the Journal of Korean Language Education from 1989 to 2005, were identified and analyzed. The result of the analysis indicates that secondary research was predominantly used over primary research (i.e., 76.4% vs. 23.6%, respectively). The study calls for concerted efforts in requiring courses in research methods as part of pre -and in-service training for KFL teachers and raising awareness with regard to ethical issues in conducting research in the field. Although performance assessment is concerned with assessing leaner`s communicative language ability in an authentic way, it has not received much attention in Korean language education. The goal of this paper is to report the implementation of performance assessment as a feasible teaching methodology catering for learner differences. The paper argues that fairness in the assessment is crucial in a diverse language background group and it can include the test taker`s topical knowledge, which was not previously regarded as important in language assessment. It also argues the need to replace the conventional language assessment scoring system with a flexible assessment scoring system which gives a different weight to different skills according to the type of assessment. For example, more weight could be given to knowledge than quality of language such as fluency and accuracy. The findings of this paper show that this flexible scoring system can prevent non-background students from thinking that they are in a disadvantaged position relative to background students. Language is transferred from speaker to hearer in the form of phones and letters in any situation of utterance. Therefore the teaching materials of Korean language must be made in the form of multimedia teaching materials. And teachers and students must be able to use the multimedia teaching materials at various teaching and learning environments. For this, we must make materials for Korean language education making use of texts, pictures, photographs, audios, videos, animations. And we must make Korean language teaching materials considering characteristics of the domains of Korean language education such as Hanguel, pronunciation, listening, speaking, reading, writing. Thus, Korean language teaching materials(such as texts, graphics, photographs, audios, videos, animations) ought to be made considering unique characteristics that is immanent in each domain of Korean language education. Based on statistical data, the writer presents an overview of the 8th TOPIK conducted in 2004, casting light on certain problems involving its management and execution. Following this, the writer suggests several solutions. Firstly, in order to develop the TOPIK as a scientific test and to enhance its quality, it is necessary to conduct systematic and in-depth research on each test. Secondly, availability of the item bank and vocabulary lists of previous tests will prove to be helpful to those who prepare these tests. Thirdly, a manpower pool consisting of experts with diverse academic backgrounds should be established and a greater number of training workshops should be organized for them to participate in. Fourthly, the TOPIK should be designed and reported such that it satisfies the diverse needs of the applicants. Fifthly, the current scoring system should be replaced by a more reliable one in terms of measurement science, since it does not equate each test and continues to have the same benchmark every year. Lastly, the TOPIK should customise its design and content according to the diverse needs of the people. (Gyeongin National University of Education)

This paper is purposed for searching the effective ways and possibilities in teaching Korean language using the Korean typical Dokkaebi Tales such as `DokkaebiBangmangi` and `DokkaebiGamtu`. Dokkaebi is a supernatural being with unusual powers. It is generally described as a tall figure having two canine teeth and one or two horns. Yet, its traditional figure in Korean folk tales is just a little bit taller than Korean people and its traits and emotions are similar to human being. Also, it has been familar in Korean folk beliefs and is fond of mischief, tricks and sometimes helping people, in that it differs from Chiwoo in China or Oni in Japan. In other words, Dokkaebi is a unique and imaginary being in many Korean traditional stories and Korean culture. Themes, fetishes, structures, types of punishment for people`s bad acts, and traditional values of `DokkaebiBangmangi` and `DokkaebiGamtu` are going to be considered in Korean language teaching methods. Teaching Korean language through Dokkaebi Tales will boost understanding Korean culture and learning Korean language. (Kyung Hee University)

In this study, we investigate L2 acquisition process of Korean onset plosives by 8 monolingual German native speakers with no prior knowledge on the target language. We suggest that the acquisition process of Korean words by Germans takes place not in a random, but in a hierarchic way, reflecting the perceptual difficulties in learning certain phonological features. It is found out that German native speakers, faced with absence of voice distinctions in the stop system of the target language, tend to distinguish synthetic counterparts of lenis-aspirated minimal pairs more readily than lenis-tensed fortis, given the minimal trios of lax, aspirated, and tensed plosives in Korean. The findings from this research tell us that the presence of aspiration [ph, th, kh] in surface, but not lexical or phonological representations /p, t, k/ in German aids in the eventual acquisition of `lenis-aspirated` and `tensed fortis-aspirated` minimal pairs in Korean. Besides, the consistent better performance for the acquisition of lenis-aspirated minimal pairs compared to tensed fortis-aspirated ones indicates that the VOT difference does not actually contribute to the acquisition of Korean plosives by German speakers. The purpose of this paper is to share an interim result of an elite Korean language education program, so-called KFOP-KU (Korean Flagship Overseas Program-Korea University). This program purports to educate a group of American elite learners of the Korean language in respective subject area to meet the demands in the field. Language education in the past century has been concentrated on the training of learners from beginning to intermediate level or above within limited range, and halted there without any further challenge or trial. Not any significant effort has been made in the field in any language so far to overcome the limit by supporting and training the learners to advanced or upper proficiency levels in an institutional setting. KFOP-KU represents a new approach in the language pedagogy. Through a `Task-based language teaching` approach in conjunction with enriched learning environment, learners are expected to reach so-called `general professional proficiency` within a year`s period.
