This essay is to research titles of Korean language and titles of its course subject, which had been available in Japanese universities, collages and high schools from 1995 to 2003 and also inquire into related problems. Firstly, there is no preferable popular textbook among universities and colleges. Each of the colleges and universities uses apposite textbooks of theirs own choice. The titles of textbooks varies Choseoneo, Hangugeo, Koreaeo, Hangeuleo. Comparatively national universities tend to prefer the title of Choseoneo. High school course book titles of Korean language varies Hangeul, Hangugeo, Choseoneo, and Hanguk·Choseoneo. Mostly it is titled as Hanguk·Choseoneo. It can be confirmed that the usage of Choseoneo as subject title is on the decrease, although it is hard to assure that Hangugeo will prevail over Choseoneo in public educational system in near future. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether classroom-based interview test of Korean proficiency can reflect authentic ways people speak in non-test situations. This study analyzed interview data collected from 11 KFL (Korean as a Foreign Language) students in Korea. It was found that the interlocutor-interviewee discourse is highly asymmetrical in terms of features of turn distribution, dominance, mutual contingency and goal-orientation. The fixed role relationship (a native speaker of Korean and nonnative speakers, or teacher and student) in the one-to-one test format makes it difficult for the interviewees to escape this asymmetry. The finding from this study implicates that various interaction pattern should be used, and that interactional competence need to be considered in a speaking test of Korean. The purpose of this paper is to examine the television "Hangul Course" program which was broadcast on the Japanese public broadcasting station NHK (Nippon Hoosoo Kyookai or Japan Broadcasting Corporation) from April 2005-Mar 2006. The contents to be included and how they should be presented in Korean language education programs in the future are also discussed. NHK`s "Hangul Course" began in 1984 and was updated during this period by lecturer KIM Jina and supervisor NOMA Hideki, with the intention of: (1) putting stress on learning the Korean language itself, (2) teaching Korean from a contrastive linguistic point of view, focusing on various differences in expressions, verbal conjugation systems, and in discourse structures in Korean and Japanese, (3) incorporating the fruits of studies on discourse, such as discourse markers, the politeness markers -yo/-iyo, speech level shifts, addressing and hailing, chengca panung palhwa or backchannel expressions, fillers, and turn-taking, (4) having serial "mini" dramas which are made for learning not only language but also culture, (5) and utilizing visual constituents such as animation or computer graphics. Until now, it has been discussed considerably to teach about the Korean Literature as a part of the Education of the Korean Language, and some consensus about the course of instruction seems to emerge from the discussions. Literature class as a part of language instruction was suggested in the form of a linguistic model, a cultural model or a human growth model of the instruction. Also, discussants or teachers of the Korean Language who have a practical view on the language instruction tend to appreciate the significance and value of the literary instruction as a way of the Korean Language education. The Korean literary works provide a number of good Korean sentences as well as some contexts or situations in which the Korean Language is exchanged. Despite these discussions and the subsequent consensus, actual plans of the Korean Literature instructions are yet to be prepared. The previous discussants have disregarded the practical issues which might arise from the implementation of the literature instructions. Therefore, a model of literature class developed by those who are mainly interested in practical application of the Korean Literature is urgently needed. The present study proposes a tentative plan for the beginning, intermediate and advanced classes of the Korean Literature while focusing on some famous Korean poems in the past time. The proposal tries to show the usefulness of the Korean literary works for the Korean Language education in that they provide a special training in learning the language. The Korean literary works are not only linguistic materials but also teaching aids instilling the culture of aesthetic sentiments. (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies)

This study introduces the principles of the development and characteristics of the structure of TUFS Language Modules, a multilingual learning system developed by the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and analyzes the peculiarities and utilities of the Korean Language Program. TUFS Language Modules have been developed for 17 languages, and each module for the 17 languages consists of "Pronunciation Modules", "Dialogue Modules", "Grammar Modules", and "Vocabulary Modules". TUFS Language Modules adopted a cross-lingual functional syllabus for the Dialogue Module which is composed of 40 functions for each of the 17 target languages. The analysis of Korean program in TUFS Language Modules can be summarized as follows: First, the Korean Language Program in the multilingual learning system induces learners` learning motivation and enables the learners to study Korean from the point of view of contrastive linguistics. Second, the "modular concept" which is the principle of its development maximizes the effect of web-based materials, and allows learners to do autonomous leaning. Third, it makes it possible for learners to participate in active learning by providing learning models on the web. (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies)

To find out what causes various miss-communication between Korean and Japanese people, we surveyed youths of Korea and Japan about their sense of language usage. In one of the items for the survey, we asked the subjects about their estimation of their feelings in the case of someone else using or eating his/her possession without telling them to find out the difference of the territorial sense of both countries. This article analyses the results of the survey operated in Tokyo and Seoul. From our analysis, we found the subjects of the Tokyo survey were very negative about someone else violating their territory without permission. On the other hand, we found that territory violation behavior was allowed in close relationships in the Seoul survey. However, it was also found that those aged in their early 20years in the Seoul survey had the tendency to feel awkward when friends and family violated their territory without permission and this group shows some common factors as the younger age group in Tokyo. There is a need for more surveys to examine if these differences will remain or not. (Tokyo University)

Recently, Korean language learners have been increasing year by year in Japanese universities. This brought about the diversity of level, purpose and contents of learning, and agitates for developing new textbooks which meets needs of learners and teachers. This study is based on an interview & questionnaires surveys on 20 students, 138 students and 31 teachers in Japanese universities. The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze their satisfaction and requests about Korean language textbooks in order to develop a desirable textbook which meets their demands. The result of this analysis indicates that students` and teacher`s opinions on textbooks should be reflected and they desire textbooks and audio-visual materials which are considered visual function, learners` native languages, status and preferences as college students. In addition, more studies on Korean language education among teachers are greatly needed and their results should be incorporated in making textbooks. To achieve this, we suggest college teachers` network should be established in Japan for the institutional and/or governmental support, and all parties of Korea and Japan should cooperate in developing teaching materials. The purpose of this paper is to set up a course model for teaching and learning the Korean Language by using Korean traditional fairy tales. The paper is based on a classroom course entitled `Textology of Korean Traditional Fairy Tales`, which I have led at the Section of Korean Studies, Sofia University "Saint Kliment Ohridski", Bulgaria. This paper shows that traditional fairy tales are ideal teaching materials for integrated teaching of the Korean language, i.e. they are suitable for intermediate and high levels of Korean language learners to increase reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and to obtain cultural knowledge of the target language. The author deals with various activities which are carried out during the whole process of the teaching and learning course. He shows how to organize a course of teaching and learning Korean as a foreign language, examines examples of teaching and learning activities which can be done before the class hours, during the class hours and after the class hours and also shows how to fulfill the evaluation process. In conclusion the paper mentions that there are many merits achieved by using fairy tales to teach and learn practical Korean and suggests this teaching method be applied by colleagues in Korea and abroad.
