The aim of this study is to investigate Korean language teachers` cultural awareness of their own culture because they can have the preconception that they are well acquainted with every aspect of Korean culture. For this purpose, the novel whose title is "It is a happy end however." from Wanseo Park is selected as a material and an ethnographic method of introspection was used. Novels can be very good ethnographic texts since they describe and show men`s lives and culture with effect. Firstly, my cultural awareness as a teacher and researcher with the text was described. Secondly, other teachers` cultural awareness was also described through the questionnaire. These processes are for judging the scope of the native Korean language teachers` cultural thoughts. The analysis of my and other teachers` introspection proved that even the teachers who are Korean natives sometimes have no knowledge about the cultural objects or have disagreeing opinions about some aspects of Korean culture. They presented different judgements especially about the cultural items related to attitudes or values. Therefore, Korean language teachers are asked to introspect their awareness of Korean culture to be more open-minded educational guides.

The aim of this study is to investigate the variation aspects of connective ending accuracy by analyzing connective ending errors in writing materials made by Korean learners. This study thus first clarifies the definition of error, and then while focusing on connective ending errors for analysis, it classifies these errors by type and calculates error rates. The analysis materials are categorized into Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and Western by the language area of learners and also by level of Korean proficiency. Using the interlanguage-based approach, this study illustrates the types and rates of learners` connective ending errors from a perspective not attempted in previous research. In this paper, connective ending error rates are measured using two criteria: ``UC`` (Used Connective ending) for grammaticality and ``TC`` (Target Connective ending) for meaningfulness. This paper is to analyze curricular changes of Chongryon Korean schools in Japan. Chongryon Korean schools belong to the category of miscellaneous schools in the classification by the Ministry of Education in Japan. They neither need to follow curricular set by the Japanese government nor receive subsidies from it. They have their own curricula and textbooks. Historically, there have been 6 curricular reforms in Chongryon Korean schools. After characterizing those reforms, this paper compares the ``Korean`` textbooks of the 1993 and 2003 reforms. In general, the political color of advocating socialism and the Juche idea and anti-American and anti-Seoul propoganda gets thinner in new textbooks. The 2003 Korean textbooks emphasize speaking practice and adapt dialogues rich with story-telling. This paper also examines linguistic norms followed in the Korean textbooks. Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening are very basic components of Korean Language Education. It is difficult to rank the four components in the order of importance. Learners learning for general purposes consider "speaking" most important, however, the priority can be very much changed for learners with academic purposes. A survey shows that reading and summarizing books and thesis are considered most important by learners learning Korean for academic purposes in universities. Korean language requirement to study in universities. Therefore, this thesis will focus on how to use cultural background for students to efficiently read and understand advanced level of reading materials for Korean for academic purposes. Also, this thesis is based on the assumption that understanding cultural background can be useful to understand a reading text in a holistic manner, and proper reading requires understanding of "social. cultural background" as well as understanding dictionary definition of words and text. As a first step, I conducted a simple verbal survey to academic students, asking how much understanding of cultural background is required for reading, then discussed the results. Also, required background and cultural knowledge for the reading is defined as concepts. This thesis suggests an actual class example which incorporates the survey results and the defined concepts.

For an effective language teaching utilizing literary works, many instructors and researchers agree that each literary work must be assigned to a proper level for literature education. But different and specific needs of courses present some difficulties in selecting a proper literary work for use in the classroom. So this study proposes a rational method for selection and arrangement of literary materials. This method consists of two steps. In the first step, a literary work, such as a poetry or an essay, was leveled in multiple categories. These categories are lexical, grammatical, cultural, and literary. From the linguistic perspective, lexical and grammatical levels are decided using graded lists of lexicon and grammatical elements. The criteria of the cultural category are universality and speciality, and the literary category is leveled according to the thematic and explicative views. In the next step, those categorical levels are integrated with applied weight ratios that reflect the significance of the course purpose. Using this integrated leveling method, many famous poetry and essays may be assigned to verified levels and can be compared to the levels to which the textbooks are already assigned.
