Knowledge of the concepts related to the postpositions and prepositions and their semantic network of distinct meanings involves knowledge beyond mapping the Korean postpositions onto the apparent Russian equivalent. The intention of this study is to provide a semantic description of the Korean postpositions within a cognitive framework, for the purpose of understanding of knowledge of the multiple meanings of the Korean postpositions. The complexity of the adverbial case marker meaning is not initially apparent to learners of Korean since ‘-ey’ and ‘-ese’ to a certain degree resemble Russian prepositions in form, that is, ‘в’,‘на’, ‘из’ and ‘с’, can be used with the Russian cases, and in English, ‘in’, ‘at’, ‘on’, ‘to’, and ‘from’ etc. However, using Korean postpositions appropriately is much more complicated than it seems. Even prepositions in Russian have multiple meanings which do not entirely equate to the most similar prepositions in the other languages. Problems arise when learners of Korean assume an equivalency for both meaning and usage and bridge the gap in learning Korean that would be appropriate in similar prepositions in Russian. Thus, in this study, I have focuses as follow: First, the scope of investigation is limited to the spatial and temporal relations: spatial-dimensional terms and temporal- dimensional terms, all of which semantically extend into the cognitive domain. Second, the spatial and temporal usage of Korean postpositions and Russian prepositions are compared to reveal similarities and differences between the spatial domain and the temporal domain by the across-linguistic point of view, and finally, through the results investigated in this study, show a pedagogical recommendation for learners of Russian. The aim of this study is to assess novel text difficulties for Korean language education measuring the determinants` effects to text difficulties. Precedent studies of text leveling were searched and the determinants for leveling novels were drawn from those works. The three students` observation results in literature education class for one semester and six students` questionnaire answers to the novels「A lucky day」, 「Please look after Mom.」, and 「The sufferings of two generations」 were analysed. The decisive determinants drawn from this research, which affect the text difficulties, were the word-meaning·expression determinant(culture-embedment, language modification, region), structure determinant(complicated structure), and socio-cultural background determinant(exceptional history, the past days, the differences of viewpoints). The word-meaning·expression determinant is thought as the onset factor, but socio-cultural background determinant is more like the intensive factor for understanding and appreciating texts. The structure determinant is a somewhat weaker one than other two determinants. One of determinant details, ‘dialects’, proved to have different weight according to students` residences, but it seemed to have unstable effects depending on students. 「A lucky day」 have the determinants of ‘culture-embedment, language modification, exceptional history, the past days’, 「Please look after Mom.」, ‘culture-embedment, language modification, structure’, and 「The sufferings of two generations」, ‘culture-embedment, language modification, region, exceptional history, the past days. But the students who have the same background region as 「The sufferings of two generations」, Kyungsang province, did not feel so difficult toward that text. The three texts’ difficulty levels were measured with these results. The measured difficulty levels of three texts were firstly「The sufferings of two generations」 >「A lucky day」>「Please look after Mom.」. On the other hand, with the considerations of students` residences or their previous experiences of that dialect, the orders would be「The sufferings of two generations」>「A lucky day」>「Please look after Mom.」 or「The sufferings of two generations」=「A lucky day」>「Please look after Mom.」, but the effects of this determinant seemed not to be stable. So in this work, the orders of 「The sufferings of two generations」=「A lucky day」> 「Please look after Mom.」 were presented. With the previously measured two texts, 「Bincheo」 and 「Sonagi」, the levels were decided on 「The sufferings of two generations」=「A lucky day」> 「Sonagi」> 「Please look after Mom.」> 「Bincheo」. 신성철. 2013. The aim of this paper is to find out the causes of the error patterns of listening and pronunciation in L2-Korean on neutral, fortis and aspirated stops in Chinese. All participants responded the questionnaires and they listen and utter Korean. The target of the consonants are collected and analyzed. Different groups of participants took part in the experiment: Korean speaking level, male and female. Through the experiment I analysis the frequencies of errors, and results indicate that there are three significant problems. First, When it comes to listening and pronunciation, the highest frequency of error is the fortis sound. Second, it is often confused to listen and pronounce among neutral, fortis and aspirated stops. And third, If they had not corrected their errors at the beginning stage, their problems would have been fossilized. This study shows two alternative solutions of education as to work out these problems based on the results of the survey. One is visual effective teaching method of Korean which show how different triple stops are. The other is tactile effective teaching method of Korean which makes them recognize laryngeal tension by touching with their fingers, when they say the fortis sound. Through this alternative solution of education, they can improve their pronunciation habit, which is not exist in Chinese pronunciations. (Kyungpook National University)

This thesis aims to identify the recognition of Korean language teachers on the guidance of learning strategies and review the learning strategy guidance situation in Korean language classes. A survey was carried out to Korean language education institutions in universities within Seoul; the replies of a total of 136 respondents were analyzed. The questionnaire comprised 8 questions for the teacher`s learning strategy guidance and 41 questions asking the status of learning strategy guidance. Korean language teachers believed that the learning strategy guidance has a positive effect on the improvement of Korean language capabilities and that active guidance is required. However, they replied that this is difficult to reflect into the classes as a result of insufficient education materials and knowledge about concrete teaching methods. The teachers are actively performing strategical guidance in reading, listening, vocabulary and grammar classes; it turned out that the strategic guidance in speaking and writing are insufficient. In addition, the metacognitive strategy guidance was very insufficient. The strategic guidance of teacher is mainly carried out through implicit methods; explicit strategy usage exercises, learner`s self-assessment on strategy usage etc. did not take place. As a conclusion, there is insufficient systematical education design for guidance of learning strategies in Korean classes. Therefore, an explicit strategy guidance class including explanation on strategy and utilization practices is required so that the learner can learn and use the learning strategy; the course of self-assessment on one`s own strategy usage must be included. In addition, metacognitive strategies should be actively guided to induce the student into becoming a self-directed learner. (Ewha Womans University)

This study examines the tendency of the published literature on the Korean language learning strategies through reviewing the papers which have been conducted to date, and tries to suggest direction for future. The materials for the subject of studies are 29 papers from academic journals and 93 theses. This paper analyzes the trend by means of classifying them by publication date, topics, and methodology used in each study. The first dissertation on Korean learning strategies was published in 1996 by Seung-hae, Kang. Since the late 2000s, approximately 10-20 studies regarding language learning strategies have been published annually. Looking into the sub-themes, ‘the studies observing aspects of using learning strategies by language skills’ and ‘the development of teaching materials and the teaching method utilizing language learning strategies’ have been the most often discussed. Nearly half of the reviewed works focus on these two themes. The most commonly used methodology has been empirical research, conducted through observation, surveys and experiments, in order to draw meaningful results from research on learning strategies. In the case of experimental studies, the methodology has been criticized in that it is difficult to collect enough data to produce meaningful results and to control all variables perfectly. However, these experimental studies on learning strategies clearly account for the vast majority of published works. In the study on learning strategies, the results of field applicability are discussed as key values above all else. Therefore, it is necessary that the studies on language learning strategies should be done on an actual level so as to be applicable learning strategies as the tool for classroom instruction and the development of teaching materials. This study focuses on the ability of Brazilian learners of Korean to use appropriate expressions and speak politely according to social and cultural contexts of Korean, through analyzing the language and strategies used in request situations. Korean native speakers are highly influenced by the social power, which thus affect their politeness strategies. In the absence of friendship, however, Koreans have their strategies highly associated with politeness expressions regardless of contextual social power. They also tend to use longer request expressions and to ask for permission, which increases according to the situation`s burden for the listener. On the other hand, in the case of Brazilian Portuguese native speakers, the level of acquaintance with the listener have more influence on the speaker`s strategies than social power. Also, Brazilian learners of Korean situated in the context of the target language(KSL) use more expressions and strategies than learners of Korean as a foreign language(KFL) who used limited and fixed expression. Although KSL learners adopt more expressions, their length of stay in Korea seemed not to give influence on their expressions. Both groups still display expressions that are highly influenced by their native language. (Kyunghee University)

The aim of this paper is to explain the functions of the negative question, which is the yes-no interrogative in discourse. The unmarked speech act of the yes-no question is to request for information that the speaker wants to know. But as the interrogative sentences are very often used as a polite way of expressing a request, making an offer and so on, the negative question can be adapted pragmatically for the purpose of performing such speech acts. In Korean, the negative question is a means of expressing attitudes, assumptions and emotions of speaker. And it can be a means of leading the conversations, rather than indicates lack of knowledge on the part of the speaker. By analyzing 10 debates of Korean TV programs, this study focuses on the discourse functions of the negative question. As the results of analyzing Korean TV debates, the negative question controls the flow of an argument, or can be used to get the floor in the debate. When considering the functions of questioning strategies that convey information effectively, the negative question shows that the speaker of oral persuasive discourse expresses his strong feelings and the assumption that the speaker has expected the reaction of the listener.
