This study analyzes the effects of high- and low-variability phonetic training on learners’ perception of Korean intonation. The participants were twenty Chinese primary learners studying Korean as a foreign language; they were and divided into two groups. The experiment consisted of a pretest, five exercises, a post-test, and a generalization test. The results are as follows. First, high- and low-variability phonetic training have the same effect on increasing the accuracy of learners’ perceptions of the grammatical function of intonation. Second, both high- and low-variability phonetic training are needed to improve the accuracy of primary learners’ perceptions of the emotional/attitudinal function of intonation. Because high-variability phonetic training can compensate for the key disadvantage of low-variability phonetic training, namely that learners find it difficult to master various intonation patterns.; and On the other hand, low-variability phonetic training can compensate for the key disadvantage of high-variability phonetic training, namely that the effect is not stable. The purpose of this study is to measure and demonstrate the orality score for expression items in Korean grammar education. Accordingly, a total of 176 expression items were extracted from two copies of a Korean grammar dictionary, and the frequencies in the written and oral corpus were analyzed. Based on this, the orality score (G²) was calculated. As a result of evaluating the orality score, a total of 36 expression items were found to have colloquialism. A standard for grading orality scores was arranged, and the spoken expression items were graded accordingly. Furthermore, a method for visualizing these results was presented. The results of this study are significant in that they can be used as materials for teaching and learning Korean grammar, explaining grammar, and discriminating between spoken and written errors. This study examines the use of functional words of intermediate-level Korean language learners by analyzing both types and frequency of functional words used in their oral tests. Findings are as follows. First, intermediate-level Korean language learners preferred to use specific functional words, and the terms acquired in the second-level Korean language course were most frequently used in their oral tests. Second, students in the third-level Korean language course also tried to actively use new functional words acquired in their current course while reinforcing the use of functional words learned in the second-level course. On the contrary, students in the fourth-level course were less active in the use of functional words compared to those in the third-level course. When generating sentences, students in the fourth-level course tended to use specific, preferred functional words, especially those learned in the second-level course, rather than attempting to use words recently acquired in their current course. Third, the comparison of speaking proficiency between students in the third-level course and the fourth-level course revealed that the two groups did not have a significant difference in speaking proficiency in terms of functional word usage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the flipped learning method implemented in a Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL) classroom at the tertiary level. The treatment variable of the experiment was a teaching method: a flipped learning for the experimental group and a traditional class for the control group. A total of 72 university students participated in this study and the research was conducted for 14 weeks. The results were as follows. First, the overall academic performance of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group, but these differences between groups were not statistically significant. Second, the listening and speaking academic performance of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group, and these differences between groups were statistically significant. This study shows that implementation of flipped learning brings an increase in academic performance, especially communicative listening and speaking skills compared to lecturer centered classes. Flipped learning lessons give more time for interaction between teachers and students than lecture centered classes. This result indicates that using flipped learning provides time for various inquiry activities and task solutions and therefore, enables positive effects on learning achievement. This study aims to investigate the difference in the ‘substantives+predicate’ type of lexical collocation perception of Korean native speakers and highly proficient learners of Korean through a self-paced reading task. The study was performed on15 native speakers and 15 advanced learners with TOPIK level 6. This study analyzed the collected data and found three major perceptive differences. (ⅰ) Unlike native speakers, advanced learners have cognitive difficulties in lexical collocation; (ⅱ) advanced learners took a longer reaction time at window 4 than native speakers; (ⅲ) native speakers had significant differences between correct and incorrect sentences, whereas advanced learners did not. As a result, the study showed that learners’ perception of lexical collocation would be affected by both native language and target language. (Kyung Hee University)

The objective of this study is to suggest measures for designing a curriculum of Korean Language as a General Education course that increases the Korean language ability necessary for academic performance targeting university students. Korean Language as General Education aims to cultivate basic Korean language ability for academic performance within university, and needs to be differentiated from other major fields or common liberal arts while efficiently delivering the educational contents within the limited semester unit. For this, this study defined the concept and category of Korean Language as General Education through a literature review, and analyzed the current operating state of these courses for foreign students. This study further suggested a curriculum with integrated four functions, composed of five sessions in the beginner’s/intermediate/advanced level to intensively deliver the educational contents in a semester. Also, this study suggests measures for strengthening vocabulary and grammar necessary for university life and academic performance, actively utilizing media discourse, and efficiently operating the curriculum within a performance-centered evaluation system. Hopefully, this study could be used for the development of an effective Korean Language as a General education course that could increase the academic ability of foreign students. (Korea University)

The purpose of this study is to analyze the Korean language spread network in the Southeastern United States based on network theory, and further presents a future-oriented vision and strategy. The Korean language spread network expands as the network recombines by attracting demand around overseas local hubs as human resources, systems, and policy projects interact. Moreover, the Korean Education Center is located as a base for spreading Korean language, specifically where supply and overseas demand meet. Therefore, by analyzing the case of the newly established Atlanta Korean Education Center, this paper tried to examine the structure and role as a local hub for disseminating Korean language. According to the analysis, the expansion process of the Korean spread network was found to be transforming and evolving through a virtuous cycle of overlapping structures with public diplomatic assets and multiplicity. Based on this, an expansion model of the Korean language spread network and a step-by-step strategy were established, and a future-oriented vision for Korean language globalization was presented. This study aims to find the mechanism language users acquire for grammatical knowledge and tries to figure out the effective way of teaching difficult grammar. For this purpose, this research particularly focuses on whether syntactic priming and input distribution affect the way Chinese learners of Korean understand particle alternation in Korean movement verb construction. The results represent that Chinese learners of Korean do not show syntactic priming effect neither in short term nor in long term. Nor does the input distribution make any difference in their understanding of the construction. This indicates that Korean L2 learners are likely to be affected more by their previous knowledge on grammar than by priming stimulus. (Ewha Womans University)

The purpose of this study is to examine co-teaching Korean as a method of foreign language education and build lesson plans by implementing co-teaching methods in Korean classroom settings. Co-teaching in Korean classes is being used to educate students from multicultural families in Korea on a mere trial basis. Co-teaching based on intertextuality has shown to fill the gap in communication between teachers and learners that may occur in Korean language classes, which has a positive effect on learners’ achievement in learning Korean. In the former sections of the study, the concept of co-teaching and its cases have been introduced. Substantial improvements of what co-teaching can deliver to Korean language education have also been found. In the latter part of the study, lesson plans implemented in the actual co-teaching Korean class has been presented, and the satisfaction level of teachers and students in co-teaching were found to be much higher than that of normal Korean classes. This research would provide a necessary guide to establish the role of distribution, responsibilities, scope, and limitations of teachers participating in future co-teaching Korean classes. This study aims to analyze how advanced Chinese Korean learners understand social and cultural implicatures based on their residential experience in Korea and the intensity of interaction. Research questions for this paper are as follows: (1) Which of the social and cultural domains is difficult to understand? (2) Does the residential experience in Korea and intensity of interaction impact their understanding of implicatures? If so, which is the most influential factor? According to the results of the experiment, Chinese learners did not have high scores in all implications; in particular, they had the lowest understanding of implicatures of the political realm. In addition, both the intensity of interaction and residential experience influenced the understanding of implications, and therefore, the latter has become the biggest factor in understanding sociocultural implicatures.
