The purpose of this study is to find out foreign students’ Korean learning patterns, motivations, and learning contents through social media hashtag network analysis. With the development of various media platforms, the paradigm of foreign language learning is changing. Previously, most learners stayed in countries where the target language was used, but now learning foreign languages through online media in their own countries has become one of the main ways of learning. In this situation, it is necessary to examine what aspects of Korean language learning are usually shown by foreign learners, and to further examine the content, and the motivation for Korean learning. We used the Instagram hashtag as an analysis target, and searched the English hashtag ‘learning Korean’ created by foreign learners and included all the hashtags that appeared with the original hashtag. This data was collected by crawling and then the network of the data was analyzed. As a result, we found that overseas Korean learners are mainly beginners who are learning Hangeul and vocabulary. In addition, Hangeul functions as a cultural symbol or design element for Korea. In the case of Korean teachers working on social media, there are many non-professional teachers. Also, Korean popular culture has a great influence on the motivation for learning Korean. Through this study, it was possible to grasp the major aspects of Korean language learning in the KFL environment, especially Korean language through online media. (Yonsei University)

This study aims to investigate how instructors and learners understand the online and offline classes along the changing environment of language learning. This study seeks to draw implications on possible methods for Korean education by investigating instructor and learner satisfaction as well as (in)effective sectors in online classes. In order to achieve such goal, a survey has been conducted on exchange students and instructors involved in the Korean Language Learning Program offered at H University from April 13th of 2020 to June 5th of the same year. The result of the asynchronous online class satisfaction survey indicated that online classes are effective for learning vocabulary and grammar. On the other hand, student interaction including rapport formation and immediate Q&A were more active in offline classes compared to that of online classes. Also, the instructors and students had varying opinion on the sectors they enjoyed or found challenging in online classes, and the difference was the most significant in speaking and listening sectors. In order to enhance satisfaction in online Korean language classes, consistent effort must be made to conduct more studies on effective teaching and related cases. (Hansung University)

The study analyzes trends in Korean speaking education from 1987 to 2020. A total of 742 studies were analyzed by text data, extracting topics and key words with high potential associations over time with Topic Modeling techniques. According to the analysis, studies of speaking Korean has improved both in quantity and quality since 2011. While previous studies focused on enabling the actual use of speaking knowledge acquired in everyday life, this changed over time to academic purpose-oriented or discussion-oriented research in a particular language region. In particular, speech evaluation studies have been continuing since the beginning to the present, and the trend has been changing from development studies to scoring comparison studies. As a future task, variable studies should be conducted on the review and evaluation environment to strengthen the validity and reliability of speaking questions. It is also necessary to study speaking for multilingual learners with diverse purposes in academic speaking research. Moreover, research on speaking has a strong identity between each topic and key words and therefore, it is necessary to strengthen convergence and linkage with other topics. Previously, selecting vocabularies was based on frequency, review of existing literature, and expert assessment. However, associative relations such as collocations were not considered. Therefore, it is necessary to quantitatively analyze a more empirical verification of the semantic network based on collocation relations. These would be confirmed through the reaction time and accuracies that appeared in performing a lexical decision task for collocations of noun-verb pairs using priming effects by native Korean speakers and Chinese Korean learners. In the results, native speakers showed statistically significant differences between unrelated words, low-frequency co-occurrences, middle-level collocations, and beginner-level collocations. However, for Chinese-speaking learners of Korean, there were differences only between collocations and non-collocations in the accuracies. In particular, high-frequency collocations showed more accurate and consistent processing patterns compared to other relation types. These suggest that teaching vocabularies using high-frequency collocations makes learners construct the semantic network more effectively and can process vocabularies most accurately and easily. The purpose of this study is to suggest a new direction of Korean cultural education according to the changes of the times, the educational environment, and the needs of learners. The societal change caused by COVID-19 has led some to suggest online culture classes; however, learners continue to request cultural experiences. Considering that cultural experiences remain necessary, our goal is to create a cultural experience program that can be used in the future of Korean language education while keeping COVID-19 in mind. In this paper, we recognize that Korean language education currently relies mainly on knowledge transfer and that cultural education and language education are being handled separately. Therefore, we propose a cultural education which encourages active participation of the learners. Accordingly, we must first move away from a paper-based study of culture and instead create cultural lessons that focus on actual experiences in order to allow learners to cultivate their ability to learn about and adapt to Korean culture. In order to accomplish this, we created a textbook that allows learners to selectively progress through grammar, speaking, listening, writing, and reading activities. The experiential education plan for Korean culture presented in this paper will increase the learners’ motivation through learner-centered education while facilitating a deeper understanding of Korean culture. This study explores how Korean teachers perceive the teaching presence for those who experienced teaching Korean language in face-to-face classes as well as online. Teaching presence is defined as the sense of learners feeling connected to a class even in a virtual environment and being able to find the interaction between learner and learner, and teacher and learner. The results confirm that Korean teachers recognized that teaching presence online is significantly lower than face-to-face instruction, p<0.001. Additionally, the relationship between teaching presence in online classes and face-to-face classes was significantly related, r=0.365, p<0.05. This study suggests that further development of small group activities, teachers’ capacity, teaching skills, and specific teaching and learning methods should be developed in order to effectively conduct classes online. It is expected that conducting practical research about teaching presence will be implemented based on the results of this study in the future. This paper aims to examine how the advanced Korean learners substantialize an anaphoric function of contextual reference using ‘i’ and ‘geu’. The analysis of the written language showed some aspect. First, Korean learners use reference items both ‘i’ and ‘geu’ series all very selectively but they use ‘geu’ more generally. Second, they use the reference item to determine other sentence components at high frequency. The reference item is an inessential modifier to make syntactic complexity that is intimately related with advanced language competence. Third, Korean learners use the reference item dissimilarly depending on the semantical feature. They use the reference item ‘i’ series more than ‘geu’ series when the property of the reference object is specific and concrete and psychological distance is close to the reference object. In case of the property of the reference object related with nowness and new information, they use also ‘i’ series reference items more than ‘geu’. (Yeungnam University)

This study investigates real cases of operating two core courses, Contrastive Linguistics and Teaching Methods of Understanding Korean by adopting a Problem-Based Learning approach: PBL. The study shows concrete and practical examples of when to begin and end the module including PBL issues, the teaching and learning activities that take place in the module process, the final presentation, and the evaluation plan after the presentation, etc. The research like this is essential at the time when the importance of an education model for reinforcing core competencies and job skills comes to the fore. It is also meaningful in that the study considers developing a PBL problem-solving curriculum out of core courses for educating Korean language teachers. In the situation of universities’ sudden shifting to non-face-to face education policies with the recent impact of COVID-19, it is somewhat difficult to continue problem-based learning methods. This study will also cover some empirical tips to lead learners to self-directed problem-based learning while proceeding the Korean Semantics course non-face-to-face during this semester. The study concludes that learners of PBL subjects will be able to achieve the group’s common goal of cooperating with members and develop skills for better mutual communication by cultivating teamwork competency through actual performance-oriented team activities. This study aims set a standard of Korean Speaking Test for Academic Purposes(KoSTAP). KoSTAP measures Korean speaking proficiency required for international students to carry out basic academic assignments at universities. Details of the standard setting procedure adopting modified-Angoff methods is given to provide procedural and internal evidence for the outcome from the standard setting. Three cut-scores that discriminate four performance standards are derived through a total of three standard setting rounds at a workshop participated by 16 expert panels. This study presents a reliable standard of Korean speaking proficiency for academic purposes. This standard can be applied to decision-making by test takers and stakeholders. It also discusses methodological procedures and interpretation of the results, and provides empirical information necessary for standard-setting studies. Finally, it reconfirms that the panel’s expertise are important factors influencing the outcome. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between resilience, grit, and academic achievement of foreign students who study Korean, and examine the mediating effect of grit on the relationship between resilience and academic achievement. For this, the relationship between the variables was analyzed through correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis based on 51 foreign students from the Korean Language Institute of J University located in Jeonju. The results confirmed the following. First, the correlation analysis for resilience and other variables found that ‘interpersonal ability’ and ‘self-control ability’, which are sub-factors of resilience, are positively related to grit and academic achievement. Second, grit’s sub-factors showed a significant relation to academic achievement. Third, it shows that grit partially mediates resilience and academic achievement. It is meaningful as this study can help understand the variables that have effects on Korean academic achievement of foreign students. (Jeonbuk National University)
