This study analyzed the perceptual strictness of Korean and Chinese on the realization of prosodic elements of Chinese Korean learners. Seven Chinese speakers and seven Korean speakers judged the performance of 15 Chinese examinees on three tasks (reading, describing, narrating) by the nature of pitch change, the nature of pause, and the nature of speech speed, and the results were analyzed by FACETS. The study results show the following: first, Chinese learners need to pay more attention to the change of pitch (intonation), but do not need to excessively pursue the accuracy of pause and speech speed, which are related to fluency. Second, learners should learn prosodic elements from the beginning of the study. Third, in the practice of prosodic elements, the type of task does not significantly affect the effectiveness of the exercise. (Seoul National University)

The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent the difficulty level of phonological rules, phonological acquisition, recognition of phonological rules and vocabulary familiarity correlate with the acquisition of phonological rules for Korean language learners. A total of 24 subjects, comprised equally of Japanese and Taiwanese learners (6 beginner and 6 intermediate learners for each nationality), were used in the study. The subjects were asked to read 58 sentences containing vocabulary that required learners to apply phonological rules, as well as vocabulary that is in the same phonological environment as the pronounced form after phonological rules are applied. Lastly, the correlation between the recognition of phonological rules and the application of those rules was studied through a recognition experiment. The results of the experiment suggest that both the difficulty level of phonological rules and vocabulary familiarity have a high correlation with phonological rule acquisition, while phonological acquisition and the recognition of phonological rules show little correlation to phonological rule acquisition, in the process of non-native speakers acquiring Korean phonological rules. As this study is the basic research to investigate the present condition of Korean language and the search for development direction, it concretely examines the present condition of Korean language education in Croatia and aims to discuss the development direction by understanding the task. For the research, based on the subject of students of Korean language at College of Liberal Arts, Zagreb University and students at King Sejong Institute, a survey was conducted and an interview with faculties at King Sejong Institute was progressed. By arranging the surveyed contents, the present condition and characteristic of Korean language, in particular, in Zagreb, Croatia were suggested. Through the result of the investigation, 5 tasks were required to be solved; 1) there is a limitation that the region is limited to Zagreb, and it is difficult to create the educational environment from local high educational institute by itself; 2) there are only basic level learners in Zagreb, 3) lack of various contents to approach to Korea culture and Korean language; 4) lack of mutual interaction between professor and lecturer and 5) the need of the development of sustainable education course. This study is meaningful as it investigates the Korean language education in Croatia and suggests the concrete contents. However, there is a limitation in that the problem and the development direction are too broad, and the specific location is confined. (University of Zagreb)

In the current Korean pronunciation education, the application of multiple phonological rules is rarely covered within the educational content. However, there are many Korean words that realize actual pronunciation through the application of multiple phonological rules, and there are many foreign learners who require education on multiple phonological rules application. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the education of the application of multiple phonological rules. Since it is possible to educate the multiple phonological rules only when the types are defined, the purpose of this study is to set the types. In this paper, 28 types of multiple phonological rules application were set mainly by analyzing the words in the “Standard Pronunciation” in accordance with the setting standards and principles established in consideration of the nature of Korean language education and the characteristics of multiple phonological rules application. Furthermore, their educational effectiveness was presented. (Korea University)

This study aims to explore the possibility of utilizing fan fiction as an education method to teach K-culture based Korean language. Korean language education using fan fiction is a new attempt to reflect the expectations and demands of Korean Wave-based learners through active participation. In this study, we discuss the specific meaning and educational benefits of fan fiction and searched for ways to utilize it in the Korean language education field. Based on case studies conducted overseas, we observed the educational impact of fan fiction resulting in voluntary language learning and improvements in learners’ language aptitude through active feedback and various communication activities. In order to apply this fan fiction to the Korean language education field, it was important to establish “affinity spaces” along with how and where voluntary and active communication could take place in educational challenges. This study is meaningful in that it explored ways for K-culture based learners to learn Korean actively and efficiently through fan fiction. It also presents educational spaces and measures that meet the needs of the timely requirements, where the importance of online classes is emphasized. (KyungHee University)

This study identified factors of interaction influencing the satisfaction of 74 foreign learners with real-time online Korean lectures using a survey design. The study developed two types of prediction models for satisfaction with learning effects and satisfaction with lectures using a decision tree algorithm, which produced the best accuracies of 75.0% and 87.5%, respectively. Four common influential factors affected the two types of prediction models: gathering feedback on assessments, providing appropriate time, identifying the learner’s learning status, and providing interesting materials. In addition, this study developed four rules for satisfaction with learning effects and six rules for satisfaction with lectures from the prediction models. Using the derived rules, this study proposed helpful directions for enhancing foreign learners’ satisfaction in real-time online Korean language lectures. This study aims to analyze the writing self-efficacy of foreign undergraduate students in a Korean writing course for academic purposes. Pre-tests and post-tests of writing self-efficacy of 56 students in the intermediate class & 74 students in the advanced class were conducted at the beginning and end of the course, and then the paired sample T-test was conducted to verify significant differences. As a result, the writing self-efficacy of both the intermediate and advanced classes increased after the course. The writing self-efficacy of the post-test is a normal level, neither high nor low but it has increased compared to the pre-test. There were also differences between the pre- and post-tests in all writing stages. The means of the items in the “after writing” stage showed a relatively low increase. It was confirmed that the academic writing course centered on genre knowledge & academic writing skills and the practice according to the writing procedure had a positive effect on the improvement of writing self-efficacy. It also shows that learners’ emotional development-the beliefs and expectation of academic writing has been achieved to some extent through the course. (Korea University)

This study aimed to draw approaches of activating Korean language education in higher education institutions of new Southern and Northern areas, where the numbers of Korean learners are consistently increasing. To draw methods for activating Korean language education, this study conducted a needs analysis for Korean teachers using IPA (Importance-Performance Analysis) and analyzed the perceptions and needs of the group of Korean education experts. The questionnaire items were divided into two categories: satisfaction and necessary aspects, and exclusive basic information aspects. The participants were asked to check a five-point scale regarding satisfaction and the necessary degree of Korean education activation methods. This study drew five categories for the questionnaire items: 1) curriculum, 2) teaching competence, 3) attracting learners, 4) educational environment and materials, and 5) cooperation for activating education. A total of 68 participants related to Korean education from 17 countries responded to the survey. After analyzing basic information, it was found that both Southern and Northern areas have many institutions with Korean language majors, and the curriculum was focused on Korean language rather than Korean studies, whereas countries like North America and Europe focused on the long history of Korean education. As for the IPA result, 5 categories showed a meaningful result, p<.000 which reveals a meaningful difference between importance and performance. It was found that the international cooperative support for Korean studies and Korean language was most urgent. Furthermore, this study found that support for attracting Korean learners, educational material and environment and understanding learners’ needs and character should be conducted continuously. Four different government agencies currently dispatch Korean teachers every year to meet the growing overseas demand. The aim of this paper is to analyze the current status of the dispatch project and propose policy suggestions. In particular, we analyzed the Vietnam region where Korean language education had grown up remarkably. Each agency has actively supported the request of the beneficiary institution, leading to the adoption of Korean as a second foreign language even at regular schools. It is true that the support of the Korean government so far has contributed to such achievements, but rather than simply increasing the number of teachers dispatched, changes are needed so that teachers can be dispatched more precisely to the request of the beneficiary institution and plan long-term career. In addition, now is the time to request reciprocal support from the Vietnamese government. Active cooperation and sharing information in carrying out the dispatch project among the agencies will definitely increase policy effectiveness. (Korea University·King Sejong Institute Foundation)

The purpose of this study is to compare apology strategies between Korean native speakers and Myanmarese Korean language learners. To this end, a DCT (Discourse Completion Test), which consists of eight situations, was developed, and responses were collected from Korean university (graduate school) students and Myanmarese university (graduate school) students majoring in Korean language. Then the overall aspects of apology strategies, situational application aspects, and aspects of strategical integration in the two groups were analyzed. The analysis result showed that the apology strategies of the two groups were more influenced by imposition or characteristics of situations than by social status or social distance overall. Based on these results, this study suggests that there is a need to pay attention to the exposure of colloquial expressions like exclamations, for improving pragmatic abilities of Myanmarese learners. Moreover, when it comes to educating learners, it is required to enable recognition of differences in situational perceptions and strategical application aspects between Korean people and Myanmarese people being under the same situation, and further apply these to communication in Korean.
