This paper investigates the relationships of cognitive and affective individual difference variables (i.e., second language [L2] aptitude and L2 learning motivation, respectively) to proficiency and achievement in Korean as a second language (KSL) for Chinese learners of Korean enrolled in a university-affiliated Korean language institute. The data were analyzed by a variety of statistical methods involving correlation multiple regression. The subtest scores of the aptitude test battery showed strong correlation with overall L2 proficiency and achievement in speaking, listening, reading, and vocabulary and grammar, while measures of the attitude/motivation test battery also corre1ated with L2 success in reading and speaking to a certain extent. The present study contributed to an in-depth understanding of factors that influence success in KSL and highlighted utility of the aptitude and attitude/motivation test batteries used in this study for predicting L2 success of learners of Korean. Implications for further research and limitations of the present study were also discussed.

The aims of this study are to analyze difference between pragmatic productive competence and pragmatic understanding competence and to determine influencing factors on the difference. Pragmatic competence is very important along with grammatical competence to improve communicative competence. However there are not many studies on pragmatic competence in Korean education studies. Therefore, I studied pragmatic competence of Korean learners as comparison between pragmatic productive competence and pragmatic understanding competence. Specifically, I studied expressions for guessing and wish that are used for refusal, suggestion, request in context. In this study, I have two research questions: i ) Is there difference between pragmatic productive competence and pragmatic understanding competence? ii) If there is difference, what factors do influence the difference? In this study, influencing factors were determined as general proficiency and pragmatical functions. The instrument was used in this study is multiple choice test. And I used a t-test to analyze the data.

『세종학당용 초급 한국어 표준교재』의 단원모형 개발 연구

The Sejonghakdang has constructed itself as a merging and cultivating institute for Korean language education in and out of Korea. However, the continual needs have arisen from the lack of adequate and suitable textbooks for the institute. The National Institute of the Korean Language launched the textbook development project to meet these needs in 2011. This paper aimed to report how this project had developed the units of the textbook, ``Korean Language Textbook for Sejonghakdang: Beginner level``(tentative title). It has been based on the analysis of the current curriculum and teaching-learning situation of the Sejonghakdang. Since the regular beginner level courses at the Sejonghakdang are operated on 4 hour session per week for 2 semesters(30 weeks), 29 units in total have been developed. The primary components of the unit are composed of 5 parts such as 2 Dialogues, Listening & Speaking, Reading & Writing, and Culture, each of which has theoretical basis on ``International Standard Curriculum for Korean language education``. The two Dialogues have sub components such as Vocabulary, Grammar, Activity 1 and Activity 2, which correspond to the Language Knowledge component of the Standard Curriculum. The integrated Listening & Speaking and Reading & Writing components also correspond to the Language Use component of the Standard Curriculum. The 8 Culture items were included as suggested in the Standard Curriculum.

Foreigners in South Korea have never been a large portion of the population. Yet by 2010, the percentage of foreigners in South Korea had risen to 2.5% of the total population. This rise is expected to continue due to the country`s low birthrate and poor industrial structure. The government has taken measures to deal with this radical social change, particularly after having characterized the situation as "irreversible general trend" in 2006. The Ministry of Education is no exception to these national efforts, but its measures to strengthen educational support programs for foreign residents` children show some shortcomings. One of these is the erroneous use of terms related to the children of immigrants. This study examines the appropriateness of the terms "multicultural family" and "multicultural education" in the context of Korean education. Since 2006, the Ministry of Education has called immigrant families "multicultural families." However, the term "multicultural family" is not acceptable because it is based upon a premise that Korean families are "monocultural families" while ignoring the fact that it is difficult imagine a real monocultural family in today`s society. Instead, in this paper we suggest the use of expressions such as the European term "Immigrant family". The term "multicultural education" is less problematic, yet this study shows that the Ministry of Education has officially adopted a policy of ````multicultural education," derived from those developed in United States, without assessing whether this type of education is suitable for Korean society or considering alternatives such as "intercultural education" which prevails throughout Europe.

중국인 학습자의 한국어 음운규칙 습득 연구

This thesis aims to research on Chinese learners` acquisition process for Korean phonological rules, and on which rules are easy to acquire and which are not. And also, I am going to make clear factors that affect acquisition process for Korean phonological rules with quickness and easiness. For this study, this thesis researched a group of students studying Korean at Korean Language and Culture Center in K University. The process of research is as follows; Step 1. Selecting Korean phonological rules for research. Step 2. Making sentences including selected phonological rules. Step 3. Recording and transcribing speeches of each student. Step 4. Analyzing each speech. Selecting Korean phonological rules, I considered two facts. First, these rules are shown and explained in Korean language textbooks for level 1, 2, 3 students. Second, even though not shown in textbooks they were needed to learn for Chinese learners. Results of research are as follow. First, The acquisition of Korean phonological rules closely related with the presenting order of phonological rules. But the frequency of experiencing and contacting rules, such as changing to plain plosive, are acquired regardless the presenting order of phonological rules. Second, in cases of being interference of mother tongue, the acquisition of phonological rules are not acquired for a long time. Finally, the simple rules are acquired with easiness, but difficult rules in finding patterns like the simplification of consonant cluster are delayed.
