We need to create the new words in our daily life owing to the necessity of creating of a new concept. However, it is hard for us to create a new single word whenever the necessity of new words manifests itself. To avoid the creation of new single word, we usually make use of existing words to form new words. Compounds and Blends are also methods of word-formation which use existing words. They are created by connecting more than two existing words without the proper connecting constituents or devices. The purpose of this paper is to explore compounds and blends and to compare them in respect of the creation of new words. For this purpose, in section 2, we survey the characteristics and meaning of compounds. In section 3, we discuss the characteristics and meaning of blends. In section 4, we compare the similarity and difference and the various characteristics of compounds and blends. we analyse their aspects of economy and the acceptability. Finally in section 5, we summarize the relationship between compounds and blends

This paper has surveyed what kinds of renovations have occurred with the theoretical changes of the models in the minimalist program(MP) proposed by Chomsky (1993, 1995, 1998). Based on the analytical assumptions for the appropriate treatments of multiple wh-phrases structures in some different languages such as English, French, Japanese, Korean, Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian, some renovative approaches to describe and explain the observed phenomena in them are presented. The main points of this paper are to show the interactive effects between the theoretically changed models in MP and the analytical approaches for the sentence structures containing multiple wh-phrases, i.e., classifying the developmental stages of MP as three according to its characteristic properties: (1) Move-α in initiative stage (section 2) (2) Shifting to Attract-α (section 3) and (3) EPPs in Theory of Agree (section 4). Following the basic concepts of each stage we have argued that both of the changes in the models of MP and the descriptive methods of these multiple wh-phrases structures have induced the motivation to know the true entities of syntactic knowledge based on the notion of Universal Grammar.

With phonological categories being represented in terms of a small set of binary atomic primitives, many linguists are encouraged to use the binary features in the characterization of syntactic construction. But, in fact, various kinds of prototype effects were found as follows. ① transitive construction; Transitivity is determined on how much subject affects object; that is, the more subject affects object, the more prototypical the transitive construction become. ② passive construction; All the S + V + O type of sentences can`t be passivized, but those sentences in which transitivity is high show more prototypical passivization. ③ noun phrase construction; If we apply transformational rules to noun phrases, some can be applied to, but other can`t. This also shows that membership of noun phrases is different; that is, human noun phrases are the most prototypical.
